MazdaSpeed Protege GTR Build

Project GTR.

As it arrived on day 1...

~5 Months Later...

Planned Go Fast Parts
Custom intake piping, BB turbo, water to air IC, custom ITB intake manifold, 600+cc fuel injectors, hondata spacer, mkII vvt miata head, tubular manifold, 3" DP, divorced 50mm wastegate. Lex's pNp ms unit with stock FWD BP harness. diyautotune vvt controller Custom mounts and crossmember. Stock GTR oil cooler.

Basically a GTR bottom(strongest BP bottom), mk2 VVT miata head (best flowing BP head) with a strong Toyota transmission. So really it the best of mazdas b series plus everything else I can get my hands on / fabricate.

I would be happy with 350WHP but I am sure if I wanted to be a dyno queen and sized my turbo large enough I could go over 400whp but it seems pointless with FWD.

To get the build started I will be using a peeshooter Saab T25 .48 matched to a set of RX7 460cc injectors. This should be an entertaining setup for this season, and over the winter I will gather the rest of the parts needed to bring the drivetrain to maximum potential. Right now I just want to get the car back on the road and work out any kinks in the setup before playing with high boost on a big turbo

So far:

GTR Motor - $400 (Sold GTR Head Sold BP26 Cams )

( basically I paid $20 for a GTR bottom end )

VVT Miata Head

Escort GT Distributor

Escort GT Alternator

Toyota E153 Trans

Custom ITB Setup (Suzuki GSXR 750cc ITBs)

Better pics with ITBs mocked up to a FSDE

http://www.toprotege.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55022

This is my new phelonic gasket for the vvt mk2 head. Should keep the manifold nice and cool. Also a pic of how I crushed a runner to almost perfect port size. With a little blending it is quite the impressive transition from round to the port shape.

Will have pics on BP once its all finished.

Tubular Exhaust Manifold

For the exhaust manifold I picked up a Version 2 SSautochrome aka obx tubular manifold with a T25 flange. They are well known to be easily broken by many as they have pretty thin walled tubing, but I am not too worried. After pming over 10 different people on several different message boards, all the people I found complaining about them lacked the most important requirements of a tubular manifold. 1. SOLID ENGINE MOUNTS 2. SOLID BRACE for the down pipe mounted to the engine. This way when the drivetrain thrashes during hard launches and shifts, the manifold does not see any stress. The flex point of the exhaust is just after the brace to the engine, so if the engine moves, the exhaust flexes in the flexible section just after the brace, and no flex is transmitted to the manifold. By paying close attention to thermal expansion I dont think I will have a problem with heat expansions destroying the manifold either. BEGI now sells this same manifold with provisions for EGR and a BRACE for the downpipe for big bucks and I havent heard anything bad from people running this same manifold with the brace. For what I paid I think its a good piece that should work great.

Reserved 03-Fuel/Ignition

Disty Ignition from Escort GT with MSD Blaster2 coil and NGK wires.

The MK2 vvt head has a block off plate that must be removed to convert to a distributor setup. Mazda was nice enough to leave the cam drive for the distributor on the exhaust cam even though the MK2 heads, both vvt and non vvt used coil on plug ignition. thanks mazda

This msd blaster2 coil is the tried and proven solution to firing high boost high rpm mixtures on turbo bps. Its weight is considerable, most who pick it up are quite surprised.

EMS - Because I am using Lex's PnP MS Unit w/stock harness I need to use the distributor. In the future I may look into coil on plug but for now, if it aint broke dont fix it. Plug and Play is nice.

Quote:
ordered the PnP MS unit from Lex.

Heres some info on the setup

VAF Delete
4 Bar MAP sensor Upgrade
Flatshift and Launch control
Additional multifunction output for methenol\water injection kit

on top of the usual MS fuel and ignition control. I am just going to run a stripped down BP harness for the engine and try to keep the MSP harness untouched as much as I can.

Also picked up an innovative WB02 setup for tuning
Injectors-Found a set of RX7 460cc injectors that will work well for this season. Will need something bigger when I go with a bigger turbo next year.
