View Full Version : Anyone regret a mod?

Guys and gals - has anyone added or modified their car in a way in which they regretted?
I added the universal APC muffler and tried to convince myself that I liked it. At first, the growl was cool, but then it became apparent that the car was too noisy INSIDE - noisier than outside. It also seemed to slow the car down. Yes, believe it or not, acceleration was lackluster. I couldn't tell if it improved gas mileage but with reduced back pressure, I assumed it would in advance.
I took it back to the shop that installed it to realign, as it was knocking around in the bumper cutout. They improved the hangers, but it still thumped when I went over any mild bumps or exiting driveways.
The bottom line - being a guinea pig doesn't mean you're going to like the results. I don't recall anyone else on here installing this particular muffler and I don't recommend it. I mean, it looked ok for an inexpensive muffler ($139). The lack of back pressure seems to work against the car. And yes, I did allow my computer to "learn" the mods afterward.
I much prefer the stock muffler at this point. I"m not looking for a replacement right now so thanks in advance to anyone who recommends Brullen, Ractive, etc. I didn't want to invest the money for a cat back. When I first inquired, the Skunk 2 was $1200 and although most cat backs are cheaper, it's still more than I wanted to invest for "looks and sound".
Anyone else in a similar situation, exhaust or otherwise?

You know those ricer blue license plate covers, you can purchase at Crappy Tire for like 12.00 for one(25.00 for the pair)....yeah well those. The frigin things faded in a matter of months...they are no more than a clear chunk of plastic now.
Okay, okay, so its not quite a mod...but damn, I hate child labour and the crap they produce.

I taught myself from my last ride what to do and what not to do!
I loved my exaust on my Mazda 626 for the first year (it was a magnaflow) after the year was up, it turned into the loudest exaust i've ever heard to date..i used to set off car alarms...and the car seemed to loose power.
So i'm not down with exausts...i must prefer the sound of a quite exaust.
Mind you everytime i get into Jasons, Eds, Sondras, or Crusings cars...i miss an exaust...but only for that moment!
BTW- Great post topic!!

I don't regret any mods that I have done to the car. I also have the Brullen down tube and I love the extra power in the higher end of the power band - don't really mind the little extra I am spending on gas (one tank goes around 35km less). I did regret painting my calipers and exhaust heat sheild with Motomaster engine paint (red faded to pink) but now everything is done in VHT though my exhaust manifold cover is nearly black cause of the clear coat I used! LOL
All in all my car is perfect - misty APC bumper lenses and all!

I have blue LED's washer nozzle's from my old car. I would rather have the green ones on this car, but I don't turn them on all the time, just when I'm being foolish.
hehe they work good for morse code when following a friend! lol

Down here at Ghetto Concept Performance Trends we have had our dealings with cars in the past. I treat this P5 with some sort of respect.
Long gone are the days of Cdn Tire d.y.i. tints turning purple and bookshelf speakers held in by seatbelts.

It's not called tiptronic - that's Volkswagen's patented name. Chrysler calls theirs autostick. Mazda calls it sportmatic and it's great. It's the whole reason I traded for the '03.

i got a nice custom exhaust with full piping and a magnaflow muffler..i was VERY disappointed with the sound but after searchin the magnaflow site i found out my muffler was meant for performance not sound so i guess its worth it =)
but i really feel the power increase

Honestly.....I regret my wheels. They look good, but they're too big and heavy. I lose 0.6 seconds in the 1/4 mile with those on. I'M NOT KIDDING, I've tested it. 16.3 w/14s, 16.9 w/17s. Crazy eh? Every time I race someone, and they just BARELY beat me, I'm like, "shit, I woulda won with my 14s". Oh well, they're going on in a week.
I LOVE my OBX exhaust. More power; calm throaty sound when I'm taking it easy, fierce and firey at full throttle. Also, I've having trouble keeping my OBX clutch pedal in place. It looks awesome, and feels good...but I should have used the drill on adapters, instead of the clamps...but that's not OBXs fault..that was my mistake.

Another thing that I hate to admit and some may agree....
My Ractive Intake...
Hisses louder than what I think is normal for an intake should sound.
So in the Spring....Bye Bye Ractive....Buying a different Brand!.
What Kind??? Not Sure Yet.
I'll ask you guys and gals next year when the time comes.
I wish I went to that sale and bought a K&N Filter just like Mike[Chops] mentioned. [$50 bucks only]
Did anyone happen to buy an extra one??? I'll buy it off ya....
MP5Navy
October 22nd, 2002, 07:40 AM
The reason that the Ractive intake is so loud is due to the filter design. The opening in the centre of the filter is what causes all the noise. Contrary to what you may think, this opening actually reduces the effectiveness of the filter. As air is pulled into the intake, the rush of air coming from all sides and top creates turbulence in the venturi. You lose power and you gain noise. If you replace the Ractive filter with a basic cone filter from K&N you should solve the noise problem.

I might, just might, put them on, only after I get my underglo kit and the rest of my neon effects. Looks too ricey by itself.

Cause the ones I picked up from CT faded after like a month of use.

I don't know if those fade, but my friend recently got the dark tints from there. Pacific Mall is located at the northeast corner of Kennedy and Steeles. You can't miss it. The mall looks like an open glass church.

To all you dissatified muffler people, I too was on a budget. But even in the Ghetto, we do are research on what to splurge on for quality and the best bang for our buck. Check out my sleeper system black eurostyle oval axel back at the next.
Also I should promote my $12.03 COLDRAM intake to compliment my free flowing torque laden exhaust system. Better yet, read the authentic testimonial in my COLDRAM product launch post.
A guy by the name of Mike Moss swears by it too!! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif

my biggest regret was replacing my h7 bulb to a PIAAs super bright bulbs actually this serves as a warning to some guys who bought these types of bulbs......what happened was the bulbs emit so much heat that it melted the bulb socket itself it happens slowly that you wouldnt notice until your bulbs would not work. First i thought that i blew my bulbs but as i look closly my bulbs are fine then i check the socket it was melted luclkly i cought it early ...i dont have this problems with my civic maybe mazda has a weak bulb sockets....so back to my old yellow lights ..its sucks but its better than just having one bright blue light working.... as far as my mazdaspeed muffler fit and finish is good no rattling noice i got good responce and my milage is good the sound is not canny loud thats about it ...
