For what you are asking, seek out the Kawa 500cc Ninja, the Suzi 600cc Bandit, or Yama 600cc Seca II. These are excellent choices for beginners, offering enough power without intimidating, good looks, and not too expensive to insure.
Stay away from full-out crotch rockets, like the GSXR, CBR, YZR and the like, unless you've got money to burn and a death wish.
Maybe you can buy Sondra's Ninja 500 so that she can get a bigger bike (GPZ 1100?). The Kawa has always had an excellent rating.

Not to startle you, but your insurance is going to be really high, especially for someone at your age.
A few years back I had to make a decision whether if I should save up to get a car or bike. I could've got a bike then but the insurance was going to kill me. Weighting my options, my family didn't approve the bike as they think it is too dangerous. To make a long story short, car it is.

Go for the Yamaha R6!!!
sorry, it's just the bike of my dreams...if you're going more for handling, I hear it's a great bike...=0)

I'm selling my "85 Honda interceptor 500. really clean bike, same as modern 500's in the sense of appearances.I'm asking $2000, also have matching leathers available. The age makes a nice difference with insurance payments.

The 2 other bikes there are my buddies. The blue is a 2000 R1, and the other is a '99 Ninja.
I'm gonna be getting a new bike in the spring time... has to be red/black tho... THINKIN' of a used Ducati (776) cuz my friend fixes them up, and will sell it to me for under $10G...
