On the protegeclub.com people are using larger oil filters on thier cars to increase filter area.

Questions:
1. will this adversly affect the oil pump?
2. will the pump work harder to run oil through a larger filter?
3. what are you're opinions of this.

Just in case anyone cares:

1) NO
2) NO
3) It really just adds more surface area for the filter to filter the bad stuff in the oil.....so yes its a good idea.

Sorry YP5 that is the worst advice and quite dangerous..

A larger filter is NOT good for your car... its infact dangerous to your engine..

Again i will relate my example to my maxima.. THe larger 3.5L v6 in my car is much smaller than the 3.0L V6 in my mom's maxima..

Reason is because the smaller filter creates higher oil pressure for your motor to circulate..

A larger oil filter will create problems in that it will lower the oil pressure PSI and may result in inadequate oil pressure for full protection..

We at the maxima board have dealt with this issue many times over because NISSAN idiot service advisors insist that the 3.0L v6 filters are correct for our 3.5L V6 maxima, when in fact the filters that us 3.5L v6 maximas are using are the SR20 4cylinder motors..

hmmmm i would have to disagree with mini on this.... but i won't open my mouth untill I can back up my earlier statement.

Something doesn't make sense, if you add a marginally larger filter you would have to add a bit for oil to "fill" it up correctly. As for oil pressure....i gotta take out my engineering books.

BRB....LOL....I have no problems being wrong...LOL.

But as for the WORSE ADVISE comment....not sure about the extra dramatics.

Hey YP5, i am just trying to be an @ss.. LOL

Actually its true.. At first i was stoned when they told me that my filters were smaller than the smaller 3.0L v6 engine in my moms car... I actually returned the 10 filters i bought and got the smaller 4cyl version for my massive 3.5L v6 engine..

I thought it was under filtration, howeve ri posted on the board and our hardcore techy's explained its because of the oil pressure..

Thanks guys.

I think I'll just stick to the factory filter.
