I'm looking for a good shop to goto for a "port n' polish".
Please post some shops that offer this service and have a good rep but will not charge me in excess of $500. Mind you this is an upgrade that will cost only a bit more than an underdrive pulley but will net you higher gains (immediately, and also in the future with more performance mods).
Just looking to port n polish and not looking to redoing the valves or other inards.
Thanks.

dave, while the engine is apart why dont you consider adding Phenolic Intake spacers. It shouldn't cost you any extra to have them put in as they reassemble the engine. I am planning on picking these up shortly.

Hey Dave
What is actually included in a port and polish, and why does it=HP gains?

actually dave, I may join you on this if you don't mind. I think some places were posted earlier by familia.

How a Port n' Polish gains you HP:
Basically the machinist smooths and cuts away at the cylinder head around the valves to improve the flow of the intake and exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. Smoother flow of gases = improved efficiency = HP gains.

Dave,
Have you given any thought to the Phenolic Intake spacers idea?

How much is the spacer? I'm not really interested though. From now on if I consider a performance mod I will have to think of things that will net me bigger gains. I am just inquiring about the Port n' Polish but if I ever decide on getting some power I will be considering a Turbo. Sick of spending a few bucks her and a few bucks there to only improve the power by a bit. I want a massive gain now and I realize I would have to buy a turbo if I wanted to beat anything out there.
Jay I think you should save the money into a turbo fund....

agreed.....I'll be going the turbo route....so I am in agreements with what I should do.
As for you, if you do decide to go and P and P, the phenolic spacers are about 105 USD for the complete kit. You could just go with the intake manifold spacer for about $12 USD + shipping. The gains are more in the ability to drastically reduce heat soak.
I have seen these things in action. Imagine placing your bare hand on the intake manifold after 1 hour of driving.... you would never be able to do it. My buddies who have MX6s, probes and 626s have these installed, you can keep you hand on the intake manifold with only a little bit of warmth.
I currently have not plans in which I will be opening up the engine, but if you have the engine open this would make sense.
just my two cents.

Why are you doing a port and polish??
Again thats not going to net you the huge gains you are looking for...
First off, what have you done to your car??
Intake, headers (if available), hiflow cat, pipes and exhaust?
Next step is to do the maintenance, plugs, wires, fuel filter etc..
Then wait and save up for the turbo....
The port and polish will not give you the night and day difference you are looking for...

I agree with Ed. Not only that a P&P will cost you a $1000 or more for a good job, but will only get you about 5 to 8% HP gains. Keep in mind a 8 valve motor costs about $600 to P&P so a 16 valve is going to cost close to double. If you want to call someone you can call the guy I've used for my VW many times for my many VW's and my friends cars.
Call Don at Scarborough Engins 416-759-9309
Tell him that i gave you his number.
He's done some really good work on Honda heads.

I realize that the PnP will not net me tons of hp (duh) but I do think it would free up 10hp (better than a pulley for around the same money). But more importantly I wanted to know in preparation for a turbo.
In terms of performance mods to my engine I have the AEM short ram, and Brullen 2.25'' header back (sans second cat).
I will not be buying a header untill I am absolutely sure that I don't want a turbo but I might still go ahead with the PnP in the spring (even though I might want to swap valves in a turbo application).
Maintenance is not a problem - I do everything myself. Plugs, filters, and wires are not that expensive (compared to aftermarket performance mods).
Turbo is the next step if I want to take it.

I don't htink port and polish will help you too much with the turbo..
It really depends on how serious you are on the turbo...

BTW I never said that the PnP would net me huge gains.... Please read the posts carefully cause all you dorks are just too eager to post your shit.

Oh and Ross you PnP prices are outrageous. Almost as much as your reflective flaming graphics.
A pnp'ed head would ease the flow of hot gases better and keep the car running a bit cooler and more efficiently (very important in a stock innards motor).
