View Full Version : Snowy drifting meet
7plymaple
January 7th, 2004, 04:50 PM
The other night I was on my way home and I decided to stop into a snow coverd lot and play arround. I have been reading the board a lot lately and am seeing some talk of rally driving and drifting in the winter cruise thread. So Im just wandering if many people enjoy this stuff and have evenings relatively free so that if it snows we could meet up and hit some lots for some drifting action.
We would have to plan the meet the day of or maybe the day before according to the weather or weather report though so I guess its one of those things that would be really spontanius. So just letting you know that Im up for it if anyone else is.

Simon..I may consider joining this event depending on the day/night.
BTW, I have never drifted before so someone has to teach me!(without f@cking up my car)

I'd love to come out to something like this, now that I finally have a car with hand brake http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I've been playing a bit on small streets in my neighbourhood when I come home at night and it takes a lot of skill and practice to be able to control the car once it starts sliding. Definitely looking forward to improving that skill, just for sh*ts and giggles.

I need to master the foot brake on another car so Im down if there is a decent dump one day sounds like fun I usually go to an unsupervised lot the first good snowfall anyways but I do recall Simon mentioning that he knew a few good lots a while back so Im up for checking them out

If you want more control while sliding, don't use the e-brake, use your left foot on the brake while your right foot is on the gas.
It takes a LONG time to get the feel of the brake, but once you know how much to push it, it works a lot better than e-braking.
You need to be moving pretty well too.
It works like this:
1) to slide you want the back of the car to lose grip.
2) when you brake the weight transfers to the front of the car
3) you use your right foot on the gas to keep the front wheels spinning
4) when the weight is transferred to the front, the brake doesn't have to work hard at all to slow the rear wheels, they dont even have to be locked up, just turning slower than the front ones.
5) apply brakes with left foot just before turning
6) turn and apply a bit more gas
7) straigten the steering wheel and the car will continue to rotate
8) if you find you are rotating too much, release the brakes just a bit, since you are still giving the car some gas, the weight will transfer more to the back of the car increasing the rear tires grip.

You know it's working when you have traction from both wheels coming out of a corner.
After a while you can "feel" it.
It's really hard to describe, but I know it's been working every day you drive. It's pretty transparent.

For those people who have never pulled 'e-brake turns,' as we use to call it, in a snowy parking lot, let me tell you. Everyone single person in the car with you has the bigest smiles on there faces. I remeber once I just missed a light post at the Bramalea City Centre while sideways. And my brother yells 'look out for the post,' while laughing his head off. Still laughing so hard he says, 'you almost wrecked your car.'
I'm in.
Any really big open areas away from normal traffic flow?

Well, I just spent almost 2 hours rotating (and rotating IN) the different parking lots down at the CNE. HUGE lots, and lots of them. Our cars are SO easy and so controllable in a drift it's amazing. It's been 10 years since I've driven front wheel drive in the snow, and although not quite as fun as a torquey rear wheel drive, once you get the e-brake working well, and the regular brakes as Logan desribes, the car is at your beck and call to turn on a dime and exactly as you want it to. Of course, those parking lots are smooth and level for the most part, and there aren't a lot of light poles around so there can be mistakes made. There were a couple of garbage cans set up so I practised my figure 8's around them a few times. But the one I'm most proud of: A perfect snake of S's down the centre of a virgin parking lot. About 10 turns in all, each one perfectly executed, followed by a kick of the back end into the next one. I knew then it was time to go home (with a huge grin on my face).
I still haven't figured out the perpetual tight radius donut though like I could do with my RWD.
BUT. I'd not suggest this area for a group of people - it is right close to a police station and the grounds are patrolled by CNE security 24 hours a day. For one person it's easy to get away with, "I'd rather practise skids in a parking lot with no one around rather than be caught on the road not knowing what the car feels like..." always has worked for me knock on wood.
Anyhow, I'm in at a moment's notice for the drifting snowy parking lot thing, as long as I don't have to drive for an hour to get there...

Wow I hoped there would be lots of drifters arround here! Okay anyone remember the Tuckers Marketplace that the first TPC Christmas party was held at? Well beside it is a building that has a huge lot behind it. I remember Mp5navey and Gen1GT doing some wet weather drifting back there after the party. Well I go past it all the time on my way home and I stopped by there the other day and had about a 20 minut drift session without any security or anything bothering me. I think its pretty safe from police and security so we should be able to have some fun for a good while.
To get there you take 404 south to Eglinton. Go east untill you pass Pharmacy. Then start looking on the left side of the road for the green and red sign of Tuckers Marketplace. Be in the left lane to make a left at the next lights. The building thats on the corner of the lights (neibour to Tuckers) is the one with the parking lot behind it. So you can make a left at the lights and then a left into the driveway on the left wich goes into the big parking lot.
The lot has a couple lightpoles on either side but it has a large open center section thats good to get all kinds of out of controll. The edges of the lot have scatterd curbed islands but theyre at the very edges of the lot.
I was thinking friday or saturday if theres still snow. I could post up the conditions of the lot the evening of and we all head out say 9ish? We gotta wait till the place closes and the lot is emptey. What do you all think?
Oh by the way I just finished a sweet session in my neibourhood in fresh powder.... oh yeah....

January 7th, 2004, 11:45 PM
Sweet! that's so close to work for me, and pretty close to home. I'll definitely be in. Hopefully there won't be too many cars parked there leaving bare spots with no snow. It's gotta be decent or I won't be drifting much - don't want to fold over my tires http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I got a flat last year from hitting a bare spot.
7plymaple
January 7th, 2004, 11:51 PM
Yeah bare spots suck. But there shouldnt be any. Last time I was there the lot had been unplowd for a few days. Were getting a nice covering of snow as we speak and there wont be any cars there at this time of night... or morning.
Anyways Ill post the conditions before the meet so we can all decide if its worth it. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

In the WESTSIDE there is a lot that I frequent with some friends at the GO station parking lot at Dixie and Dundas (just south). There are plenty of poles to plot out a slalom and lots of room to be a complete idiot.
As for using the e-brake - it's fun but I see it as cheating when performing the Scandinavian Flick or drifting while in a slalom type course.
As for driving in reverse and droping it into 1st - it's damn fun.
Problem is this kind of fun is usually had on a spontaneous basis....

Does anyone have cones they can bring? Does anyone live near a city works yard where they can "borrow" some? Less risky than poles for a slalom...

Well my girlfriend is working till 11 tomorrow night so how does tomorrow evening sound? I would suggest after 8 just to make sure the lot is empty. Im going to be in the neigbourhood tonight so Ill check the lot to make sure that its empty by 8. As for cops we should be okay if we get cought. I get cought every now and then. I just tell them I like to practice emergency techniques when I get the chance to have a snowy lot all to myself. And they have always left me to continue playing. Of course it will be a bit different if there is a group of us but Im sure we can come up with something.
Or Im also up for a trip to the westside if that lot is better for everyone. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
As long as the lot is sweet and we get in a nice session Im happy!

Unless I royally muffed up the turn, I prefer to not use the e-brake at all.
Can't make it for tomorrow but I wouldn't mind joining up for the next drift meet.
I also need to practice my reverse 180, maybe even a double 180.
Have fun everyone and play safe.

January 8th, 2004, 06:01 PM
Hmm. A double 180. So.... would that be a ... let me calculate .... a 360? http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I don't know if that's it's official name, but here goes:
Driving in reverse, turn the front wheels sharp either way so that the front drifts around the back wheels. It's basically a reverse 180 at this point. about 3/4 of the way through the sweep of the front end, you'd shift into 1st (or 2nd), and continue to drive it out, driving in the direction you were originally going in reverse, but now you're going forward.
NOt sure if that makes much sense. If you're out tomorrow and the snow's decent I'll show ya http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

That is what I meant by a reverse 180.
And it's technically not a 360 if I don't continue the turn.
By double 180 I mean that I do a reverse 180 [which I've done on other cars] and accelerate forwards a bit, then try a forwards 180 [which I have not been able to do intentionally].

A reverse 180 is way easier in a straight gate shift automatic, or one that has reverse-neutral and drive close together.
I've never tried it on a manual.

Action. Gotcha. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I like the idea of continuing it again into reverse. never tried it, sonds tough in a FWD. Hmm. next time it snows it shall be interesting!
I'm expecting the parking lots to be crap tomorrow night because it's not snowing tonight. It'll likely be icy and there'll be lots of ridges even if it snows tomorrow. I checked out a couple of parking lots downtown after work today and there's no way I'd subject my wheels & alignment to that. Unless it snows a whole whack tomorrow, count me out. Next time though... it'll have to be very last minute.

I'm drift crazy http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif I spent 4+ hours today just for drifting and tossin' the car around on wht's left of the snow. LOl the trick of the day is: when backing out of a driveway turn the wheel completly (whichever direction you may want to go in) and rev up...letting the car to a 200degree-turn on to the road.....sortof like an unfinished front wheel donut(spinning tires in reverse)...boya! Wait theres still hope. Im going to check the lot where we practiced auto X last fall. Last winter they never plowed it so it was no good because it was too deep but with the snow that we have had it might be pretty sweet. Ill be back in about 45 minuts with a conditions report.
7plymaple
January 9th, 2004, 05:05 PM
Okay I checked the lot and its a freeking drifting wonderland! Its got slippy packed snow underneath a fresh layer of powder that goes flying everywhere when you slide. I gave it a good testing just now. Only thing is that the lot is about 10 minuts further north. Actually its the same distance north from the 401 as the other lot was south of the 410. I work in the area.
Its a kickassed lot. It has absolutely no poles or curbed islands at all. Its huge too. Its for a public park with baseball diamonds and stuff so its unplowed. Its hidden in an industreal area and mostly blocked from view of the road so the group can park out of site as we take turns drifting.
We can meet at 404 and steels at the Montannas parking lot. So instead of going south on DVP you go north on 404 to steels and go left at the lights. That will cross the bridge over the 404 and youll see a plaza on the right. Turn in there and we can meet up in the lot in front of the Montannas. Its accross the lot from the Mcdonalds thats in the front of the mall.
Anyone still interested? I was thinking we could still do it arround 8?

So. It was a BLAST!!! To all that missed it, Ha Ha...!!
I've got about 12 mins of DV that I need to figure out how to get on my computer into DivX or something like that... Anyone who can help would be much appreciated! I have firewire card, cable, and am running W2k...
No one got injured, no one's car got injured. It was a dark and (not so) snowy night. There was packed snow under some powder, and aside from a visit from some SUV wanting to do a drug deal (or so the story goes), no visitors including no visits from the fuzzzzz. There were some wild 360s and 720s in reverse (Brian), some wiked spinning forward / reverse / forward 360s (Simon), and a whole lot of sliding around, E-brake turns, HUGE long drifts, and a couple of gears being grinded. I'm kind of wondering how Simon kept turning off his headlights though. Hmm. And I'm sure we all lost a few extra miles off our winter treads. Oh well.
But stupid me, I still have the prize in the car. I'd say it either goes to Brian for his out of control crazy 720 off the hill (involving definite red-line in reverse and quite possibly hitting the rev-limiter (oops)), or Simon's super smooth 360 transition over flat ground (which involved a slight grind into reverse but quite skillfully done), and a later very slight contact with a pile of Christmas trees.
I'll leave it up in the air for now and at the next meet (Brampton to Orangeville?) I'll give you your prize. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Sorry to whoever missed it, but I'm sure there will be plenty more snowy drifting fun filled evenings!
Edit: Chris, you're right, it was Simon - Sorry for the confusion: Got home, had a couple of drinks. Stupid Brain...

The absolute easiest way for you to encode the video is to download Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft. That will let you capture right off the camera through firewire and encode to whatever bandwidth WMV file you want.
Get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows....lt.aspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx)

What kind of rim cost you $240?
Are you saying it was the front wheel? I think you might be referring to your driveshaft. But I find it hard to believe it is bent. Do you just need an alignment?
Good luck!

I just got home and Im still thinking about that sweet session! Everyone was just busting it out and tryin crazy stuff. I still cant see out of my back windows! But the weirdest thing kept happening... Every time I tried to drift everything would go black! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Kevin I think the prize should go to Brian because of the 720 that looked like his car was a jet in a flat spin. I like to think of it as "The hellicoptor spin". That was some serius rotating speed! Mazdaspeeds definitley do the best reverse donuts of any front wheel drive car I have ever seen. I guess its an LSD thing.
ZOUEV sorry to hear about the damage. I dont know what year your car is but if its one of the beams in the rear suspension that you have bent then maybe you can get it cheep from an earlier 3rd gen from the junkyard.
But next time come with us cause theres nothing to hit in our lot. Exept Christmas trees. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif
By the way lets keep the lot location on the downlow. It doesnt get plowed at all over the winter so lets keep it so only this club and our friends who join us to these drift meets know where it is. Just so a bunch of other guys dont start having meets there and using up our snow.

I don't know... that forward, reverse, forward 360 thing you had going on Simon was pretty impressive!! I had a blast guys, thanks Simon for scouting out the lot ahead of time, it was perfect... no curbs, no poles, just a few Christmas trees lying in the corner...
It was awesome to finally get a chance to play around with my car and see what it could do in the snow... I'm really looking forward to the AutoX in two weeks time... I hope there is snow on the ground! (Two reasons, it will be fun and I'm too lazy to change my tires if it's dry out).
Can't wait for some new snow to do this again... on that note, Doug it would probably be worth the drive if we were going to stick around the lot a bit longer, it's just tonight, a bunch of us had other commitments after our drift session!

It was fun.
I discovered a few things:
My snow tires are good, now I know the limits.
I am no rally guy, but I am better suited for the track.
A forwards 180 is next to impossible without the handbrake.
The P5 has too much torque [that or I just gun it too much].
I wish I had limited slip.

I got jealous of not coming to your meet. So I went to play with some friends on Saturday night, and again today.
I've got vids. Most of the stuff from the night didn't work because it's too dark, so that's why I went during daylight today.

I WISH I had vids of tonight. again, at the CNE. If any of you want a huge drift-fest, it's well worth the drive down there. WIDE open parking lots, easily mid 3rd gear slides. I was sideways for oh.... 100m or so. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Did a few 180s, reverse and forwards, and a few 360s, both reverse and forwards. My car looked like a snow-car hehe no paint colour showing except on the roof, and even that had a ton of snow land on it.
After being out tonight, I'm not surprised that we all had to use the handbrake - it wasn't actually that slippy. Not the best snow I guess. Tonight was much better for non-e-brake sliding.
WHEN'S THE NEXT MEET?!
Interesting happening though. For a while I lost both my ABS and speedometer. Hmm. So I shut off the car, restarted, and it all came back. Anyone have a clue?
Enjoy the snow, everyone!

Guys, if there's new snow on Friday, let's do this downtown. Please!!! It's so good at the CNE I just spent 2 hours there. Deep snow, all I can say is I'm glad for LSD!! Every 2 drifts I had to get out and clean off the windows it was so deep - 6-7" no doubt. But they plow it every time it snows, so there has to be fresh snow.
