I am hopefully putting in a short shifter this weekend. I have conflicting advice as to put in syn. tranny fuild or not. Someone said that you are not suppose to put in syn. tranny fluid until 20k....Could someone shed some light on this? ED?
Thanks in Advance.

The other guys in this club can give you a better "tech-na-cal" answer. But this is what i do know.
It's a good idea to change to Syn, if you are adding a shortshifter...Don't know exactly why...but i do know that if you feel the shifting with a shortshifter with out-syn, its alot stiffer and not as user friendly as a shifter with Syn.

Syn tranny oil is just better quality but like syn motor oil you hear a lot of myths about things F-ing up cause you introduced syn to early or whatever else. Right now my short shifter is happy in the stock fluids but I will change it out to syn when I have no other mods to do.
To lube the shifter you can just use a basic high heat white lithum grease.

Synthetic will make shifting allot easier.
You don't really need high temp white lithium (it's not close to any heat); although, it wouldn't hurt.
I just used multipurpose grease.
Let me know if you need help installing it; I've already done a few of them, and I've got it down to a fine art.

The thread is not complete until i come here!!
First off, synthetic tranny fluid is an aboslute must.. It was amazing how my old protege reacted to some redline tranny fluid.. It cured some of my synchro grinding i was having because of earlier dmaange and the shifting in the cold was MUCH smoother..
PLEASE BECAREFUL WHICH ONES YOU USE, there are ratings from GL1 to GL5.. i believe the protege uses GL4, but consult your owners manual...
GL 5 fluid in a GL 4 style tranny will actually eat up your gears and syncrho..
For my maxima 6 speed i have now switched over to AMSOIL 2000 RACE synthetic which is compatible for GL1-GL5..
ITs very cheap ($80) but you will definitly wish you did this much sooner!!!
TRUST ME...
BTW.. some short shift kits can cause damage to your transmission, incase some people don't know that... Do a search and you will find damaged trannies all over the world because of cheap ass short shift kits..
I believe the problem is as a result of the quicker shifts which bang the gears and cause damage..

Can I use Redline MT90? for my 2002 P5?
or should I use the Amsoil RACE2000?

My 2002 p5 manual says:
Manual Transaxle Oil: Any Temperature API Service (GL-4 or GL-5) SAE 75W90
Above 10 degree C API Service GL4, GL5, SAE80W90
what does the sae # mean? is it related to the engine oil SAE ratings? From my understanding, the digits BEFORE the W mean visocoscity when cold.....after W Viscocity when hot....
The larger the thinner the oil/less visoious???
is that correct?

I believe the lower the number the thinner the viscosity...
And i am using AMSOIL RACE because i was told it was really good.... And its cool, the fluid is BLUE!!!
HOwever i am going to try redline MT90..
I forgot which redline is which but i believe MT90 is right for the protgege..

Thanks for the info Ed, I was considering changing my tranny fluid to synthetic but like Evolution I was warned against it. Friends have said that whenever they hear someone changing their tranny fluid they get nothing but problems and a useless transmission later down the road. Frobably pext year i may change the fluid when I get my car tuned.

That's because they put in the wrong oil. Some people wanna do it cheap and just put in synthetic motor oil and that'll kill the box in no time.
If you wanna go with Redline then MT90 is the one to use.
