Rule #1
Find a remote starter that uses actual tach signal for reading rpms. There are many alarms that use voltage sense to determine the car has started. Using the ignition wire (at teh distributor) will result in accurate starts and reduce starter wear. If your alarm has optional features to use either, please insist the installer uses the tach signal and not to cheese out and do voltage sense or timed start.. It will save you in the long run, and prevent from starter grind
Rule #2
Find an alarm with anti grind feature. So when you have remote started your car, it will prevenet you from trying th start the car twice (it will save the gears on your starter and also save you from looking like a total moron)
Rule #3
If you ahve a manual transmission, ensure the alarm is capable of having both auto and standard. Also look into whehter there is a neutral sense on your tranny . My maxima has a wire from the tranny which determines whehter my 6speed shifter is in neutral or in gear. You can use this wire to avoid using manual reservation mode (entry/exit sequence) and use auto tranny mode. If not, make sure you have manual reservation to ensure no accidents occur. Do not install an auto tranny remote starter on a manual unless you are absolute sure of the risks
Rule #4
Long distance remote starters are the aboslute necessity. Whats the point of a remote starter if you ahve to walk up to 10feet to your car. Long range is important
Rule #5
Ensure that your remote starter is integral with an alarm so taht you can prevent theft if your remote starter is engaged (come on, a running car no driver to be seen means PLEASE STEAL ME)
Rule #6
Two way paging alarms should be an absolute requirement because you can have visual status on your car as to whether its running or not.. Otherwise you ahve to keep lookin out the window to see if it has started or if someone is trying to steal your car.
Rule # 7
GET A COMPUSTAR 2000AS or later model ( i am waiting for the new 2WSS version which is double the range thus 1 mile range however its not approved in Canada) This has all the features you need, and might cost a bit more, but i have never heard of any complaints
Rule #8
If you want to cheap out and buy a crappy alarm and/or remote starter, be prepared to suffer. In the long run you are going to pay for the problems you will suffer including remote transmitter failure, brain failure and the inconvenience. I was on my third remote starter alarm on my old protege because i used crappy alarm remote starter thinking they were all the same. After i got my compustar, i had NO PROBLEMS at all. And i had teh ability to start my car from 0.5 miles away and even monitor my trunk and doors at all times.
Rule #9
If you are a bit literate in terms of electronics, install it your damn self, you save 250 dollars on the install, nad you learn a hell of a lot in terms of your cars wiring harness.. Believe me its a great lesson. I did my protege with the compustar in about 6 hours (because i had so many relays to control other things)... But at least you know whwat you have done and don't get hosed by mazda when they blame alarm for problems with your brakes (LOL)... Mazada tried to pull a fast one on me before and i traced all the wires i tapped and they shut the FUK up and replaced the offending part on my protege..
ANYWAYS, i hope that helps some people ont his board.
If you are interested in setting up a group deal let me know for a COMPUSTAR ALARM.. I got some pull at RPN autosound (been a customer for almost 8 years)... so i can setup a group deal just like it was done on the Toronto ACCORDS BOARD....
Cheers
