A couple of my friends want to try installing one of those engine start switches, I was wondering if anyone has done it or tried it or know how to do this? Any info will be greatly helpful.

ummmm,.....isn't that a little,....uhhhh,.....unsafe?
I'm sure insurance companies would love those.
What stops somebody from jacking your car if you have one of them? Just curious,.....ther's gotta' be more to it than what I'm thinking.

Yeah there is more to it! You still have to turn the key half way into the ACC position before you push the button to start it. Some of the new sports cars have them like the Honda S2000 and a few of the BMW's.

Well then,...what the hell's the point???
If you have to put the key in and turn it half way,....just continue the motion and turn it the rest of the way. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Not like it's saving you any effort,....if anything,..it's more effort.
It'd be cool if it was a keyless thing,...but then as suggested, there's a safety issue.
I guess I just don't get this fangled hi-tech stuff,...I just figured out how to use my toaster yesterday. I kept putting the bread in backwards. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dontgetit.gif

My fiance's dad has a 7 series BMW with a push button starter. All he does is keep the key (about the sise and shape of our remote) in his pocket and when he gets in, if the key is with him he just has to push to start. It's pretty cool.

See that's not bad,....'cause maybe you can leave it in your wallet or something.
I just don't see the point of it when you still need to put the keys in the egnition and turn it half way. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dontgetit.gif

I agree Darren. He keeps his "key" with him to unlock the doors but that's about it. Once the "key" senses that it's in the car, I guess it turns the electronics so that it can be started. It's really quite cool.

I believe its purpose is also to give you that formula car feel. They start their cars by push button. When it was first introduced it was more a gimmick. Now that they have advances in its technology it is a quicker method of starting the car like in the BMW.
But for all extensive purposes it's a gimmick.

Yeah but if you have one and sombody tries to steal your car. They break the steering column cover and find they are missing some of the wires they need to start the car. At least is delays them until they find the start button. http://ib2.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://ib2.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif

I was actually going to hook one of those up, but with a difference - you'd have to push the button in order to complete the starter circuit, but you'd still have to start it using the key. Would prevent a thief from simply hotwiring the car by ripping out the ignition.

How much does one of those start buttons cost? with wiring and everything you need?

These buttons are only a few bucks and come with the relay. Very simple to install and most people seem to like it. It's basically a momentary button with a small relay.
Here's one on ebay. I put the same one in. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2465145909&category=33576)

I like the idea of putting a start button in my car. I was thinking of putting one in a while ago. I think that I would still wire it so that the car can start from the key, cause if my dad or someone needed to use my car I would have to brief them on how to use the car. Trust me it gets annoying when I gotta tell my dad what to expect when he's driving my car. But if no one else might be borrowing your car then it's fine to wire the car to start with just the button.
Just a side note, that start button still has a while to go before it sells. The price will go up at least double. Here's a picture of the one I was thinking of getting. It is more like the original ones that come with the car.

correct me if i am wrong, but isn't this a very simple conversion. i mean, all we need to do is take the wires the ppl hotwire the cars with, and hook it up the a push button that you can get at electrical shop for less than $5. or is there more to it? well of course u will still have to turn the key the get the rest of the electronics working, for that, you can hook it up to a switch. so in order to start your car, u will need to flip the switch, then push the start button, that will be cool.
a better idea will be to rewire the push button to the glove box, so if someone is trying to steal your car, they will have to find where it is.

This is getting complicated. On top of all of this, I don't know if any of this is gonna work with my compustar alarm system. Ah...........whatever.

Or you could have a flip panel with your fuelpump switch and the ignition button and the rest of the stuff http://ib2.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif K maybe thats not a good idea. But the start button by itself sounds pretty cool, tho 70 bucks is kinda expensive for a button http://ib2.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

Yes 70 bucks is expensive for a momentary button. I got my button off ebay for about 20 bucks and they sent me a relay thats worth 30 bucks, nice people. I have mine hooked up so you turn the key half way and than the button can start the car or turning the key the normal way will also start the car. There is no way someone can hotwire a car using just a button, unless you rip out the whole ignition panel and rewire all of the wires. The key still has to be turned to unlock the steering wheel, and to unlock the ignition. Only than the car can be started with the button or the key.
