Steve at A-Spec custom made me a short shifter by making some modifications to the stock shifter. He basically relocated the pivot point on the stock shifter. Doing so would have cost me $150, however, I had him cut the lever down by removing a bit of the shaft and rewelding it thus maintaining the top extension piece that has the threads for our shift knob. It cost me an extra $50. So I paid $200. Funny thing is, when I asked Steve to give it to me for $180 he said that we could toss a coin for it! So I tossed the coin and called "tails!", it landed "heads" so I gave up the $20 to make the total bill $200. So if you win the coin toss you can probably get it for $180 (cash). The guys at the shop are really personable and friendly. It will take you 1.5 hours to get the short shifter tops.

If you were planning on getting the B&M short shifter (like I was) this alternative is definitely something to consider. I have driven short shifted cars before (civics with H&R) and I can tell you that the short shifter I had made by A-Spec is really sweet. The engagement is positive and firm, setting into gear is a non-event it's so easy and fast you never have to think twice whether it's in gear or not. In conclusion, I am really happy I didn't buy the B&M.

Even easier way-get adjustable Pacesetter for $150 CAN(all included) from Nopi.
Pacesetter part #01-0610(1991-1997 Protege/MX-3)
B&M is just a rip off-I'd rather hang myself than shell out $300 for piece of steel.

I find it funny that you would call B&M a rip off and not comment on paying 200 bucks for a cut and weld job. If thats not trailer park butcher mechanic work then I don't know what is! I have personally seen a couple people bang second gear in their civics and end up with half their shifter in their hand because they went the cut and weld way.

Bottom line is cut and weld is not as strong and is the cheap way of doing things.

Has anyone tried to shift their car with one inch of shaft on their shifter? Good luck!
