RE: the scuff plate....
I was just checking this out last night on the www.protegeclub.com message board. Door-Sill thread (http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12591)
The place that manufactures these things can be found at..........hon-yu.com (http://www.hon-yu.com.tw/frameset2.htm)
Here are the pertinent excerpts from their discussion on a group buy situation currently in progress: ( it's lengthy)
<><><>
Is the "set" of door sills all four of them? What's with the two sets of prices - is that $38 front and $25 rear or something? IMO, it'd be silly to have just the fronts, no matter how cool they look.
<><><>
It's gonna take a pretty good group buy to offset that $200 extra ($160 duty charges plus $40 shipping) - not to mention the cost of then shipping individually inside the US - these things might wind up being $60+ per set (front OR rear - together, upwards of $100) once all is said and done. at .7 cu/ft each, the 35 cu/ft shipping container is for 50 sets.
<><><>
I got the same response, $38 is for all 4 neon sills
$25 is for the one with out the neon. The prices are great, but the shipping is a B$%ch. We need to start a group buy.
Protege5 door sill plate with E.L. light ---------- USD$38/set
Protege5 door sill plate without E.L. light -------- USD$25/set
<><><>
Sunridge Mazda here in Calgary has another set for sale, they are the indiglo and say "Protege'5." I think they're asking $210 CAD.
<><><>
To anyone who is interested in the door sill, I know the Canadian distributor. Give Stephen a call at (403)888-9289.
<><><>
I have just spoken to Stephen with WWW Trading Ltd. in Calgary (Who Sunridge and Kramer Mazda gets them from). If there is a big enough order, he will sell them to all Protege Club members at the following price:
1999 & Up Protege Sills (Set of 4 pieces) - USD$75
1999 & Up Protege Sills with blue light (set of 4 pieces) - USD$120
2002 & Up Protege 5 Sills (set of 4 pieces) - USD$75
2002 & Up Protege 5 Sills with blue light (set of 4) -USD$120
Shipping will be extra. He will ship it by UPS for USD$15.00 flat.
For anyone who wish to order them he has over 1000 sets in inventory. He can be reached at (403)888-9289 or email him at wwwtrading@shaw.ca.
Hope this information helps everyone who is interested. I have it on my car, it looks COOOOOL!
<><><>
This is good information, but the price seems a bit high. This guy is going to make a killing if we buy from him. It is my understanding that they can be bought for $50/set plus shipping for the EL ones. Or maybe that is for the standard ones. Can anyone confirm if this is an alright deal?
<><><>
OK, here we go...
Each set is an average cost of $32. There are 50 sets per 35CuFt "Crate". The Freight on that "crate is $200. Total for one "crate":
32x50=1600
Freight=200
Total = 1800 or $36/set
So, if we buy 50 sets off this guy at $100/set not including shipping he is roughly making almost a 200% profit. That is not a killing? I wish I had $1800 to get a "crate" shipped to me so I could sell them to you all!
I am just ecplaing myself, that is all. I understand this guy runs a business to make money and he is obviously doing a good job at it. It sure as hell makes it easier to buy off of him instead of trying to go another route.
..............
Maybe if enough people are interested we could also initiate a group buy situation utilizing this pre-info.....? The scuff plates look very nice in either the indiglo or the simply plain metal versions. Hope this helps.

Wow, that last post was long. Smoley hokes.
I picked up the non-illuminated ss ones @ Kieswetter Mazda in Kitchener. They are $149 - not cheap, but they don't look cheap either. They make the car look classy, especially a dark blue or black car. Wouldn't be as noticable on a silver or white car I think. (Oops, sorry Ian, just noticed your car is silver - just my opinion though - you obviously like the look.)
Personally, I feel illuminated ones will only work temporarily as the rocker panel/door sill area gets wet and grimey on a regular basis and this would short out anything electrical in time, unless they are some space-age indiglo waterproof invention. Besides, do we really need lights on our door sills?
Kieswetter offers 15% discount to TOProtege club members. How you go about this, I don't know, as I had them installed on my new car, but you can contact Steve Craig @ 519-653-2540 to discuss. They will arrange shipment if you're not interested in driving to Kitchener/Cambridge.

Hey,... thanks for the info 03bluP5!
Yeah, you're probably right about them not "showing" too well on a silver car, but I think it'll be a subtle sophistication that just adds to the classy-ness of the car.
