View Full Version : Resetting ECU

Sorry if this has already been covered somewhere else -- but is there a quick & simple way that I can reset my ECU?

The reason I ask is because the automatic transmission on my 2000 LX seems to drop 1 or 2 gears far too easily... and I think it's having a negative effect on my fuel efficiency.

For example I'll be cruising along a city road at 60 or 70 clicks in 4th, and I'll give just a little bit of gas to pass someone or get up a hill or whatever, and the car will almost immediately drop into 3rd and sometimes all the way down to 2nd. I know the transmission is designed to do this to provide extra torque, but it happens (IMO) way too easily.

So I'm hoping resetting the ECU will wipe any bad habits it has picked up... of course there could be other issues like the mass airflow sensor, throttle position sensor etc, but I've got less than 16,000km on it, so I wouldn't expect any of those components to be malfunctioning just quite yet. Or maybe I've just been beating on the car a little too much lately and it's trying to adjust to my driving style, I dunno.

Any hints/tips are appreciated.

1. Disconnect the wire from your negative battery terminal.
2. Press the brakes all the way down a few times.
3. Wait 5-10 mins.
4. Reconnect the wire to your negative battery terminal.
5. Start the car and idle for a few minutes.
6. Take your car for a spin.

The ECU should start "learning" your driving habits right away. It should have fully learned this by the end of the first tank of gas.
