how is it that ford can get a NA engine to 170HP without a turbo and mazda has to throw in a turbo to get the same result???

I echo Jali-P5's question.
The ramblings are not new to me, but make me worried about my next Mazda purchase in the future.
As long as the engine and trannies come from JPN I will give any car a look.

I hope FORD doesn't oppress Mazda too much tihe regards to entire automobile development in the future.

I just love the die hard Honda owners though. I was once one and still keep the faith and respect of that religion.

Jean-Alain, it doesn't surprise me why Mazda opted to go turbo and matched the Focus in HP numbers as FORD still has the last say, according to some sources. Remember in SCCA and GT events, the Protege race cars are running NA at around 240 HP (input from our members who attended Mosport). So heck, Mazda can definitely do it without the aid of forced induction but the bottom line is - FORD really doesn't want their Focus sports entry to get upstaged somewhat... http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Michael, it's true about Honda drivers, especially the Vtec ones... Many of my friends are and they're true loyalists, much like our own Miata & RX-7 hardcores though...

Our engine does make 170HP in Japan ... but Mazda seems to think that good emissions ratings are important for the N.A. market :|
