View Full Version : Too much noise in the car at higher rpms; exhaust? Muffler? Sound proofing

Hi and forgive me if this is in the wrong forum. I bought a silver p5 with mazdaspeed engine swap that has turbo and other mods like suspension, gauges for air to fuel ratio, fuel pressure, and a turbo gauge. Most of the citydriving is okay because I can early shift but once I get in the highway and go up past 120km/h the noise from exhaust(?) usually gives me a head ache. What can I do to take the noise down a bit? I'm still trying to learn everything that was done to this p5. P.s thnk you to whoever built this p5, it's a beast.

Any idea what exhaust it is? If you don't know a pic would help.

Is it a banging noise or just a rattling? In whatever case poke around under the car, I know when my heat sheild was comming loose aka rusting off, it would only make noise at first around 3-3500rpm.
It got to the point where it would rattle and ping at idle. I just used a pry bar and ripped the bitch off.

I think he's talking about drone.
Posting a pic of the exhaust will help us determine what you're using.
Does the car vibrate inside the cab? you could have aftermarket motor mounts too causing the cabin to vibrate a tone at certain RPMs.

To me it does sound as though the OP is just talking about the drone of an aftermarket exhaust. I imagine that depending upon the exhaust system (brand/model) you could add a muffler or change a muffler to quiet it down, or replace it all together with a different one. Given that it is a turbo'd motor, however, it is easier said than done.

Not easier said than done. Just easy. The turbo exhausts are no more complex than a NA exhaust from a sound perspective.

A turbo car should be quieter. Take pics of the exhaust. Maybe you can buy a silencer for it. Or add a resonator. Or change the muffler

Gotcha. I would have expected that for a a turbo'd engine's exhaust/muffler choices, along with pipe diameters would be more important to match appropriately to the engine, in so far as the turbo used, the boost produced, etc..

^ you're correct in some ways. A full exhaust (turbo back) would obviously require a re-tuning of the ECU however just a muffler swap which is what's in question here isn't really going to affect the tune.

actually you only need to retune to get 100% of the potential performance increase.
people put 3" catless turbo back exhaust on every car you can think of without touching the tune.
but a retune will typically gain some additional power.

So I still didn't get pics but my friend said it's cracked. I put a OEM mazda muffler on it and the mech. fixed the crack now it's silent. SO SILENT. I still get a bit of woomp woomp woomp at around 45-50km/h but my friend said it's just the winters. We rotated them from the back to the front.
