Thanks for the kind words guys its been a work in progress and im actually gonna paint it again.

@ Brian MP5T for the radiator i have no problems, and i love the look. If your friend has the FS motor then its all good. I have the ZM so it wasent a perfect fit i had to shorten the lower hose a bit, also had to turn my stock fans into slim fans they wont fit w/o digging into the fins and messing up the radiator.

@ Triniswagg I really love the look of the hood/trunk combo in black. In every video game i play that you can paint the car i always paint the hood and trunk black. Glad someone else likes the look also. Theres quite a few people who dont care for the look but oh well its my car.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a very very rare VIS CF Hood for the 99-00 now im on the search for the CF Trunk so now they wont just be black theyll be cf black which IMO is alot better.

looking good!! so what colour are you going to paint it now?

I havent decided yet im still thinking about it my wife was thinking of a bronze color with black rims but IDK. But what ever color i do paint i want it to match the rims. Ive been looking at rims and finally narrowed it down to the Rota GRID's i like the green color but it really depends on the color i paint the car so im still playing around with some options. I may decide to stay with the white or go black or maybe back to red IDK im torn

Car looks awsome

Thanks man i dont frequent this forum much but once i get my build under way for those who want to check it out im gonna update as i do things with plenty of pics. If you like it now wait till im done itll be SEXY IMO that is....

Well theres a few other items ive got recently to add to the stock pile of parts....

This is probably my favorite mod is the CF Hood because ive searched for a few years trying to find one for my car and NOTHING. Ive seen plenty for the 2001 & up but not the 99-00 but then luck came my way and well here it is its a VIS Racing CF Hood. Apparently its a rare thing not sure how many were made or even if they were put into production. But in all my research ive never seen another one so for all i know this may be the only one. I tried contacting VIS to see how many were made but no response.

holy ***k i want a CF trunk that looks awsome how much lighter is it than a stock trunk?

speedracr79
September 3rd, 2011, 02:32 PM
I didnt weigh them but on VIS website states the CF trunk is 13lbs and it weighs about 50% less than the OEM so im assuming its about 25-30lbs for oem.

Also im going to remove all my interior seats, pillars, carpet all that good stuff since im getting the carpet from the MSP so i can clean the cab and also run the wires under the carpet for my sub and amp.

Hopefully this weekend if time permits then im going to sand the body, remove the doors, and paint the jambs so well see how that goes.

A trunk cage and a strut bar on a car with a solid parcel shelf? A little overkill if you ask me...
Also, adjustable came gears but stock cams? Is there a plan there?

What brand actually makes those? You want to be careful when it comes to safety gear...

midnitehour
January 27th, 2012, 09:49 AM
that harness bar looks soo unsafe for two reasons.

1) if you have any rear passengers they should wear helmets going forward always
2) the tabs where the rods to the floor mount are in the wrong place as it places a sheer load on the welds when stressed rather than tension. sheer = weakest point of a weld.

I see pics of kids on the dash, please keep point 1 in mind if they ride in this car.

also if you choose to use this bar, i'd use it as a brace for your belts and tie the belts into the rear parcel or the floor under the rear seats and not directly onto the bar.

midnitehour
January 27th, 2012, 09:52 AM
Oh wow. i didn't even catch that the bar bolts to the adjustable part of the seatbelt .

if you hit something head on, you're eating the steering wheel

This. Those are 4 point belts (I'm wondering why the hole in the anchors that go to the floor mounts look so weird?). They should only be installed to approved mounts that are meant to withstand the force of an accident. See here (http://www.schrothracing.com/store/tuning/rallye/rallye-4) for proper installation instructions, keeping in mind you may need to replace the bolts to get enough thread engagement.

Also, are those belts even DOT approved? I run the rally3 ones for autocross and they are great but I would never run them on the street seeing as how restrictive they are in terms of movement (and prevent you from ducking in the advent of a rollover). Speaking of accidents, your neck will take all of the brute force since there is no give, also making your airbag useless.

If you just want a tighter seat feel, get a good seat with a GC-lock (http://www.cg-lock.com/index.html).

Mike_Moss
January 27th, 2012, 11:48 AM
Please don't use this in anything but an autocross. (Even then, I wouldn't do it - there are better options like the CG Lock.)

Not suitable for street use, not suitable for race use, not suitable AT ALL!

Please don't use this in anything but an autocross. (Even then, I wouldn't do it - there are better options like the CG Lock.)

Not suitable for street use, not suitable for race use, not suitable AT ALL!
5 or 6 point FIA approved right?

Thanks for the input the harnesses are just for show im getting 5pt cam locks for other stuff. I do have kids but they are no where near the bar i had them in the back already. As for the bar like i mentioned in the post it was just a test fitting.

They may not be close now but wait until you brake suddenly and they all get a harness bar to the face. Poor kids :(

The harnesses are one thing, but the fact that they're mounted to a mouse trap, makes them completely useless.

Even if your kids are strapped in the back, god forbid if you have a head on collision, the seat belt stretch. This slowly brings the body to a stop, and the soft backside of the front seats help.

Take the bar off it's rice that ruins an otherwise nice protege.

January 30th, 2012, 08:39 AM
agreed, lose all of it and use your factory belts. if you want race car harness belts, get a race car. don't play with fire, especially with kids. why risk getting them hurt because you want to be "cool".

speedracr79
January 30th, 2012, 12:49 PM
Well the bar is staying and i dont see how its rice and will be useless mounted where it is. I guess Sparco is rice for their bars,as for the mounting the factory belts are mounted in the exact same spot as the stock belts.
heres a pic of sparcos bar mounted in the exact same spot as mine so i guess they got it wrong too.
http://www.sparcousa.com/harness_bars.asp
http://www.sparcousa.com/pharness_bars.asp?id=604

Who said i wanted to be "cool" I know i never did. As for my kids are conscerned i appreciate all the worrying for them but they will be just fine. When i said i had them in the back already, my cars on jackstands in my garage and has been for about a year. i had them in the back and had them sit foward and see if they are in range of the bar and they are not.

I know people who have run harness bars and harnesses with kids and people in the back and not one has had their head smashed into the bar, like i said before im not gonna have any adults in the back anyways, so thats enough about that.

So if i want harnesses i have to get a race car how do you figure. So if people want fast cars they should get super cars and not make their faster?

For those who dont agree with my choices, or have a problem with the parts i install, thats perfectly fine, you dont have to. But this is my build and i will build it the way i want. When you buy my parts for my build, or fund it in any way then you can have a say in how its modded.

For those who unsubscribe for my choices i understand its your choice.

Again i appreciate all the worry but the bars gonna stay, my kids are gonna be fine and if we could get back on topic id appreciate it.

if you ever read d-sport or scc you see these bars all the time so your not the only one running this. no idea if it will actually improve much but def looks cool if you can make it work safely.

i *almost* made one as I always thought they looked cool but could not justify having harness' in my DD. I hate anyone who asks to ride in the back anyways so them getting new teeth is cool with me. the biggest drawback would be not being able to bone a chick on the front seat if the bar does not let the seat recline.

midnitehour
January 30th, 2012, 08:36 PM
by posting your build on the internet, you've simultaneously asked for people to comment about it. that's basically the idea behind a forum.

but on topic to the bar, sparco is a company in the business to make money. take that for what it's worth.
Also for what it's worth sparco doesn't list a bar for the protege so you posting links is moot.
to prove that here's a link to a person with no teeth. same concept
http://haquelebac.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/toothless-old-man-2.jpg?w=300&h=323&h=323 moot.

the reason for my critique is because of where the harness bar bolts on to.

That point is super strong no doubt. the stock belt attaches there.
However in a crash when your body applies force to that point via the belts, the belts pull that point downwards.

In a severe crash the sliding mechanism will fail, causing the mount to bottom out, which is ok as it can't go anywhere past that.
If you figure from the top point to the bottom is 6 inches. which translates to less than 3in of forward movement. (even less so since it's at an angle to your body's movement)

the way you have your bar mounted has the sliding mechanism at the very bottom.

All good and great right? I just said it won't go anywhere else from there right?

no.

in a crash your body will apply tension on the belts.
the tension from your belts will pull the bar forward which can't go forward.
the harness bar, the ties to the floor, and the chasis create a triangle.
If the sliding mech fails the harness bar will move up. simple geometry. as the harness bar moves up, the harness goes slack.

now, looking at your pictures, the angles in the said triangle are very small where the bar meets the chasis, as those get closer to 0 (bar and supports are perpendicular to the floor) the harness bar is completely ineffective.
this is where my "trap" comments come in.

If you insist on this bar. idealy, you want as much angle between the bar and the support rod. the best would be if the support rod is 45* to the floor.
http://www.jamessimpson.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/harnessbar-300x225.jpg

Here you see if the bar moves up, even if the point where the bpillar is warped due to a roll, the simple angles will not allow the bar to move forward by much.

this to me is more ideal, as the supports also go into tension in a collision.

I know its the internet and people are gonna comment and talk smack or give props, im fine either way, but from what ive seen from this forum you guys seem to be pretty cool here so i dont have to worry about the smack talking here.

Well like i said i have no problem with comments and critiques at all, they are welcome especially if they are like this one with some helpful info not just remove it or people will smash their faces in it.

As for the pic of sparco i posted it for the mounting points as a referrence so the point was not moot. I never said there was one for a protege so i dont see what that has to do with the pic being valid or not as a referrence. Thanks for the funny pic though.

As for the bar i will take your info into advisement and i will make a final decision thanks for the input

Unless you are installing harnesses for the rear passengers, they will move in the event of a collision.

While doing all that we spent a little time to install my Infinity tweeters. Turned out I didnt have to modify the sail panels at all I only had to remove the guard on the tweeters and they fit right in just had to line them up and force them in the clips but they locked in and are good.

Thanks man. Yeah i agree it is the best way plus im gonna swap out my heater core and maybe some other components under the dash while i have it out this way i wont have to do it again any time soon if something goes out. But you have gone a few levels above me and created a beautiful piece of machinary. Really wish i could get my car to your level but unfortunatly most of those parts arent made for my car and well no real big budget dosent help either.

But my car will look great non the less in its own right im gonna do it right this time and go as all out as i can while still looking subtle and and clean. No out rageous color scheme or flashy interior. But youll see when im done.
