Finally!

Its about time that I was able to pickup a trackcar, was looking for a while for a car that I can work on and have fun with.

Its a 1995 BMW E36 325is
-2.5L inline-6
-5sp Manual
-LSD
-2 Door Coupe

Shes already got a few things on her which would help so thats kinda nice to have makes it so that I can get seat time that much quicker.

Status as of right now:
Currently the car runs and drives, BUT needs a few things to pass safety.

Things I need to do immediatey:
-Get car saftied, and change it from unfit to fit.
-Windshield
-Ebrake
-Turn Signal

Things I want to do immediately:
-Fix the few rust spots
-Clean the car (LOL why cant it be summer yet...)
-Basic maintenance (oil change, coolant change, transmission oil change, diff oil change)

Things I am going to do/planned to do later on:
-Gut the car
-Clean interior
-Add gauges (Oil pressure, Water temp, Oil temp
-Change radiator and waterpump

The thing that I really want to change before I do anything serious, however gotta let the cashflow recouprate, is the radiator and waterpump. From factory the system is decent, but over the years it tends to degrade and especially if the car might be eventually driven hard, I want to have that up to snuff. Wouldnt want to over heat it and kill/warp the block/head. An all aluminum rad (gonna get rid of the plastic endtank crap that breaks at the seams) is the typically the choice, and also change the water pump as the stock system has a plastic waterpump impeller which is prone to failure on older cars. So the newer aftermarket ones are metal and provide alot more reliablity. Plan to do all the work myself so yay! I was suprised that once I got more and more into the BMW crowd alot of the parts arent as terribly expensive as I thought. The rad and waterpump together can be had for around 340 w/ gaskets, hoses and coolant.

Part of the reason for the car is also so I can get back into working on a car. Dont want to touch the DD and rather then rushing to get shit done and be like "OMFG gotta get to work tommorow, fix this NAO!" I rather work on this and get parts for cheaper as I can wait for them to ship and all that, and am not at the mercy of the douchebag thats gonna gouge me because he knows I need it tonight.

So tracky and worky both gonna be fun!

Ah, some pictures of the car in the garage. I SOOOOO wanted to clean it but man the second I try to shits gonna freeze after and once that happens I know I'll endup braking shit. I am however thinking to get that "no rinse/water carwash" stuff that you spray on and wipe.

PICTARS!

If you plan to only drive this beast in the summer, please do yourself and all your fellow track users a favour and run distilled water (with water wetter if you want) instead of anti-freeze. Anti-freeze is more slippery than oil, and even though you're changing the hoses, if one ever blows, there is no clean-up with water. Not too mention the cooling properties are better!

Just remember to drain it every winter.

Thanks mang! It was a tad over my 1000 buck price range.

So to all those that said it wasnt doable, where are they now?

Good point, I heard of running water and water wetter. I gotta see exactly how I'll be transporting the car to and from the track though.

Thanks for the words guys! :D Time to have fun!

needs a E46 m3 engine ;)

Because those engines are cheap and eazy to come by...right? ;)

However Driver Mod > Car Mod, just take a look at Forum Wars 2, where the MS3 placed 3rd overall (Ford GT, Viper, Evo X, Sti, Z06 vette, and a bunch of others were there....). Gotta get the driver mod done first though ;) or rather thats part of the point of this...

Even if you drive it to the track there will be nothing wrong with this, the only time this won't work is if you plan to drive it in the winter. Water cools better than anti-freeze, but it freezes.

Looking forward to see you out at the track!

Yeah I heard it shouldnt be a problem. Draining it shouldnt be an issue either. Just gotta make sure I remember to do so. LOL

Honestly, most are asses for no apparent reason. I am finding that out on some of the BMW boards (not ALL, but MOST). LOL

I'll give you something else to rock ;) or that is hard as a rock? LOL

How many KMs on it Laleet?

300xxx KMs. A little high however 20000 KMs a year x 14 years = 280000 KMs. So its right around the right amount of KMs for a car that year. She purrs though when I turn her on, and when I drive around so yay!

Are you sure it is wise to live by the words of Jeremy Clarkson?

Why not go back into FC's and FD's?

Cost, Maintenance on them and oh yeah...Cost.

They are fun cars, and honestly probably better then the BMW on the track. However the cost of getting one then maintenance on them (they are VERY strict on them) and not to mention the availability of parts make it expensive too. Not saying I am opposed to doing maintenance its just theres alot more to be done pre-emptively then what I would be doing now. The availability of parts and their cost also is a big factor. Trying to have a 'somewhat' budget track machine means that, that also ruled out a FC. FD ppffftttt not even close in the budget in anyway shape or form.

What's your budget

The car alone was about ~1000, but had to stretch it a slight bit to get what I wanted.

The rest depends on what exactly I'll be doing. I suspect around anothet 1000-1500 to have myself ready for this season. Again the plan isnt to be 100% caged and all that this season. This season is focusing on seat time and getting skill up. However it doesnt mean that if a good good good deal comes by that I wont jump on it ;)

Ah so heres another installment of The Mean Green Machine!

Was a semi productive day, was basically setout to check a few things on the car. Findout why a few things werent working and start to put together a plan of attack of how I want to do/fix/change certain things on the car.

There were a few pleasant surprises to be found today...and also a few non-pleasant surprises to be found today.

The pleasant things were:

-Car has LSD (according to my LSD check, however will double check with VIN @ BMW)
-Car has Bilstien Shocks and Bilstien Springs (its their sport suspension pack)
-Turner Motorsports adjustable rear camber arms
-Stainless Steel Brakelines
-Some aftermarket control arms w/ some sorta bushings (looks nice though LOL)
-Supersprint BMW Catback exhaust
-Camber plates
-5mm spacers
-Car has studs for bolting the rims on, rather then the normal BMW bolt w/stud in 1 thinngy

The not pleasant things were:

-E brake doesnt work (which I knew), BUT the whole ebrake mechanism thats needed isnt even there. Its like someone removed that part of the system. I see the ebrake cable go to the brake area, but thats it. (the ebrake mechanism is separate from the normal brakes)
-Exhaust hangers are broken and hence the exhaust is hanging lower. Its supported by some ghetto steel wire stuff
-Corner turning light = broken :(
-Must clean car...Dirty car is no fun to work on

All in all it was a good day. Found out that I had more then I had originally thought (I dont think even the previous owner knew exactly what he had he just knew that "the suspension was done".)

Had to make a trip to princess auto in the middle of my adventures for a couple of tools/deep sockets that I didnt have. I forgot that not everything is the standard Mazda/Japanese 10,12,14,16,20,22mm stuff. LOL

Took a bunch of pics to throw up so you can see. There is rust on the car alot of it is just surface rust which I expected for a 1995 that was/has been driven in the winter. However the structural and most of the body is good :D So yay!

Are the shocks from the factory? If so, they probably aren't in the best of shapes with that many miles.
Having said that, you got a lot of nice mods with the car for the price you paid for it... kinda odd that the previous owner didn't know about any of it, which means the 2nd previous owner probably didn't either. Really odd...

I wouldn't fret to much over the ebrake, it will make sure you don't use it after you've come off the track and damage your brakes.

Well the prev owner said that the owner before him had the suspension done a few years ago. So the suspension isnt stock (the yellow bilsteins are not stock btw from factory, they do sometimes come with black ones that are stock however). I figure it this way, I was gonna work on the suspension this year and get some thing just to run me by until next year where I'll know more of what I want, and hopefully have more cash. With this it just makes sure that I can buy myself a year.

I wouldn't fret to much over the ebrake, it will make sure you don't use it after you've come off the track and damage your brakes.

Normally I agree, but I want the car saftied so I can transfer it into my name as fit. The car is in my name but as unfit right now. Also still unsure of how I want to get to the track with it, as in drive it there or figure out some way to trailer it if I can get it feasable enough. Jury is still out on that...

Well most ebrakes use the regular caliper and brakes to hold the car (when ebrake is engaged, think of the protege's rear brakes). After a few track laps the car's brakes are gonna be hot hot hot. So by using the ebrake you'll endup warping the rotor, possibly melding the pad and rotor together.

However curious because on the BMW the inside hat of the rotor is where the ebrake mechanism is, so I wonder how much of a problem it would be. As the hat cant really warp all that much. Especially when its sandwhiched between the hub and the wheel. Any experience on that Brian?

Laleet is trying to get this car safetied though so he kinda has to fret about the ebrake since it can't pass without it AFAIK...

Correcto!

thekid
January 21st, 2011, 10:35 AM
There are other ways to get safeties.

If you apply the e-brake when the brakes are super hot right after you've come off the track, you risk having the pads burn the rotors, and possibly transfer material and leave it behind on the rotor.

CulRidr
January 21st, 2011, 12:49 PM
I didn't mean that the Bilsteins were stock as in every car gets it, I meant it was a factory installed (or dealer installed?) option when he bought it, that's how I understood it. However if they are not as old as the car, then trust me you'll have a lot more things you'll want to touch before that as the car will have plenty of potential for you to learn/reach before you want to upgrade shocks/springs...

pretty sexy stuff.. you've got pillow ball mounts as well.

I'm kinda confused with the rear brake. did you take the brake disc/rotor off? because it looks like the caliper is just chillin there without a brake rotor.

unless the brakes are a drum style brake and the e-brake uses a disc. which is ????

and as for the spacer, i'm only assuming that because the rotor is missing you need a spacer so that the rim clears the caliper.

I need to come and check this out.

YOU DOUCHE! LOL

Yeah I took the rotAr off, but put the caliper back on so its not hanging by the braided line.

E36 has the disk in the read, but the ebrake is a drum setup within the hat/hub of the brake rotAr.

however the spacer makes for a AWESOME rotAr with BIG cross drilled holes. I mean look at it! BALLIN'!

Working on the car past thursday doing some more investigative digging and as well as seeing what parts I should start ordering:

-I have rear shock mounts that are aftermarket. The are anodized red and seem like they are the ones from turner, but wont know forsure until I take apart the rear deck/speakers to get access to the top of the mounts. Right now I can only see them from below.

-The ebrake situation doesnt seem as bad. The ebrake cables move freely so thats a plus! The bolts and all that needed were all rusted, however I was able to break them free and unbolt them off. So thats a sigh of relief to know that I can get all the stuff I need to off, so I can start to install the ebrake stuff. I need to get ordering all the stuff I need for that soon

-The horn I thought didnt work before, actually does. BMW was smart in the fact that you cannot engage the horn if there is no key in the igniton and as well as its not in the ACC mode or ON. So basically you cant make it go off by accident sorta thing. Turned the car on to do some testing of other stuff, and to get her juices flowing...LOL...and for shits I hit the horn and a loud BEEP came out. YAY!

- I swapped side mirrors over back to the stockers from the M3 replica's. While the replica's look nice they are smaller (the mirror is smaller) and personally I wanna see more on the track. So swapped out to the stockers, and personally I like the look better.

- Did some odds and ends and whatever. Overall was a pretty productive day! :D

Wee update:

Ordered a bunch of the BMW parts inbetween school/work. I have had very little time to look at the car, let alone work on it. Should get some more time coming up soon once I get the Buffalo school communte down and everything sorted

Ordered most of the rear parking brake stuff, and a few of the other tidbits that I needed. Also a short shifter w/ new bushing as my shifter was as sloppy as a 2 cent hooker.

However the plot thickens: I have found out that the car's suspension was done/prepared by Raven Motorsports out in Markham. Looking at their history and their shop/website. These guys DO NOT kid around. They have a few BMW Race cars and not to mention when I called them to see if maybe I can take the car to them to have them look at it and see if they remember it, I can tell by the way the guy was speaking he knows his shit.

So more interesting information/discoveries being made...

The smaller the wheel the better from a cost perspective for tires. As Etienne mentioned figure out what tire size you want to run.

So havent had much time to devote to the car as I been UBER buzy with some IRL stuff.

However had some time to work on her, and with UBER thanks to midnitehours for coming by and giving me a hand and his coc...wait...

LOL

-Got the brake stuff figured out
-Started grinding/sanding the body a bit to get rid of rust. POR15ed it (that shit is TRULY amazing) and did some ROUGH body filling. Still have to do more and then sand it and primer it. But its a start none the less
-Ripped off the body moulding. I had 2 pieces missing and to buy the whole set from BMW is retarded expensive or I could buy the aftermarket ones (100 bucks) plus clips (20 bucks)....so no point in all that just took them off. I'll seal up the holes and call it a day
-Few more things to work in before its ready for safety
-Once saftied then I get to gut the sucker! Even though gutting shouldnt affect saftey some mechanics are 'old skool' and automatically assume something is wrong or not there thus failing saftey. Playing it safe!

Also picked up some rims for the monstor! Kosei K1 17x8's. I am actually debating to get rid of them and go 16", I got a goooooddddd deal on the 17s that I couldnt pass up. However the price between tire sizes (16 and 17) difference for a set is 40-80 bucks. So not THAT bad. But I am actually kinda worried about how wide they are. I test mounted them and they fit fine, but I think once the car is off the jackstands shit might rib as my suspension is already lowered and has a decent bit of camber/castor.

Pic-a-tars!

keep the 17x8's. you'll have an easier time finding tires for it.

^i agree with azi on the rims, 17x8 is a reall easy size to find tires.

the weight difference between a 16 and 17 isn't as big as you told. me.

just looked it up and it's a .5lb difference.

keep the 17's unless you can flip it for a profit.

as for tires.

r888s come in everything from 195 to 245 in 16's.

I don't think you'll be needing 315 wide tires any time soon nor would you want to run anything wider than the 245 on the 8.

With having little time to do much else...I did slowly work on the BMW, mostly body work stuff. I got 1 side like 80% done. Still needs more work but here are some pics for now

Fixing the rear quarter panel area:

http://www.laleetsgarage.com/pics/photos/E36-GreenMachine/Worklog/AprMay2011/BMW%20worky%20(1).jpg

The moulding on the car was missing in some parts. Buying new moulding is expensive new. I can get the aftermarket stuff for 120..BUT then I gotta buy clips and all that. ***k it. tore the shit off, filled the holes and did some sanding...

Also got my rims and tires (rims a month ago, tires like...yesterday)

So did a tad bit more work on the Bimmer.

Did a bit more work on the fixing of the body, nothing major. But I do need to devote more time to doing that.

Got my tyres mounted on the Kosei's and then couldnt hold off and wanted to install them on the car.

Me Likey...LOTS

Dont mind the last pic, was taken @ 11:30 at night with my phone with a shakey hand

And yes the windshield is cracked. Gonna replace that last (once I have all the other work done). No point in changing it now, especially when I have to remove stuff would hate to change it, then ding it when gutting the car.

I might...MIGHT beable to score a deal on a Dinan 325is Chip for my car for 120. Normally they are a couple hundred. They arent as good as a MarkyD chip, however for 120 I really cant go wrong.

From what Ive seen they produce a +16/+19 Hp/Tq at the wheels. Mmmmmm...me wants.

Oh totally plan on painting it once I get all that body stuff done.

I am just debating to get it painted by a shop, or attempt to do it on my own (have most of the tools to do it). I figure I might try it myself, it doesnt seem that hard. Most of the work is in the prep and since I am doing most if not all of it, I might as well paint it too. If I can get the paint for a cheap price I'll probably do it.

You should look into the oil pump nut issue. They can vibrate off with sustained high rpm driving after being fine for years and years of daily driving. Friend of mine did his and said it was a metric shit ton of work but he said when he got in there the nut could be turned with ease by hand. He also installed some baffles when he was inside though.

Not sure if you've checked it out already but www.vorshlag.com is just flat out awesome.

Oye!

Up-to-Daters time...

So had some time to devote to the Green Machine...that Might not stay Green for long... LOL

Got alot more of the body work done. Its is NOT perfect, however compared to before with the rust and all that. Its 100% better. I cleaned up most of it and got it smooth, however my bondo skills and sanding skills arent perfect so upon close look up you can see imperfections. But again, this is a track car so not too worried about getting it perfect.

Gonna endup painting it myself, right now part of it is just rattlecan primer black. I plan on doing the whole car primered then a layer of Satin Black so its all even textured. I have a compressor and the paint gun, so I'll give it a shot. Again budget is directing this as its a track car and hence doesnt need a expensive paint job.

Got the interior somewhat gutted, still lots to do, the more daunting task of stripping the dashboard out, and figuring what wiring I can keep and what I cannot keep and all that. Heatercore and the like will probably get ditched, however gotta look into it.

One thing is BMW like to put screws EVERYWHERE, omg its a pain in the ass. Everything is also heavy the seats are like 80lbs a pop its rediculous.

Anyhow heres some pics, sorry for the crappy cellphone pics, didnt have my DSLR handy.

awesome. yah cage it!!

midnitehour

don't cage it. drive it first. you might find you'll need the money elsewhere. if not then cage it.

keep the stripping going. loose the power locks and windows and shit.

i'd loose the windows all together. and all the sheet metal there as well.

ditch the radio, speakers, seat warmer wires etc.

your in car wiring should look something like this:

Brake lights.
reverse lights
fuel pump.
wipers
healights
12v plug for go pro.

If you plan to put in a 5 or 6pnt harness, make sure you put in at least a roll bar, last thing you want it to be strapped in to a fixed back seat in a rollover and no where to go.

This really is more of a LOL rather than a Update...

Making progress on the Track Monstor!

Work ended early today however as I sliced my thumb...

*****CAUTION semi-pg-13-gore THEN tremendous LULz*****

Yes that is the piece of my thumb that got sliced, and yes my thumb is bandaged... I was going to preserve the piece (your supposed to keep severed limbs cold, I figured same deal here) and put it on, however a quick call to TeleHealth Canada before doing so advised me to NOT do so...However memories of battle/working wounds
http://www.laleetsgarage.com/pics/photos/E36-GreenMachine/Worklog/Aug2011/ThumbOWIE.jpg

The lulz however come in when I tried to get some polysporn, I only had the polysporn for teeth/gums and it says not to use it on external wounds. So I proceeded to raid the medicine cabinet, and I found this BOROLINE, a cream for cuts and all that. However what struck me as WTF is what was written on it, as shown below...

http://www.laleetsgarage.com/pics/photos/E36-GreenMachine/Worklog/Aug2011/ointmentWTF.jpg

Forgot to upload these pics...but heres a Up-To-Daters!

When the weather was warm for a bit there, did some more work on the Machine. Did more strippings. I wasnt going to originally go full full full strip (as in the wiring and all that) just a basic strip however, Midnitehour came by and decided that a full strip-tease was inorder so he got on his hands and knees and started to strip....more. LOL decided that the dash would come out and take out the HVAC and all that and go for broke.

Also welded the sunroof panel with a peice of sheet metal and it will be reinforced from underneath later.

Lots of spare parts everywhere, and as well alot of more crap to come out. One thing I do gotta say is that the carpetting and the foaminsualtion on the BMW is super duper thick. There were parts that were 4-6 inches thick. When people say they can strip 600-800lbs I am start to believe it more and more.

Off to ZAH PICTARS!

And yes the windsheild is cracked, was bought that way...well it had a few. I actually added a few myself. Never knew what It was like to take a hammer to the windshield...now I know. However the plan was to always replace it right when I finish the stripping that way theres no risk of breaking/cracking/scratching the new one.

I wouldn't re-inforce the sunroof cap. We already put more than too many welds on that thing. the goal is to keep the shinny side up.

we still need to weld a floor pan on, or you'll be pulling a brian O'Conor.

also that would be something i'd reinforce as you don't want that failing if you decide to go offroading.
