Check this thread out.. they recommend Amsoil or Redline
http://www.tsxclub.com/forums/1st-gen-car-care/48841-kind-oil-filter-you-use.html
Some also recommend Pennzoil Platinum.

wow that's pretty good deal. should go with it for sure then. if i remember correctly the civic takes 4.5L of oil?
so 4.5L of motul filter and labour really good deal imo

Recently i've been using Royal Purple and have some Amsoil that i'll be trying next oil change on the MSP, using these because I got a pretty good deal on both when I purchased in bulk.

I bought a case of royal purple and so far haven't really liked it. I wouldn't buy another case. I think I am going to try amsoil next.

i dont know about the filter, but i got this shop i always forget the name, its around mcowan and highway 7, same area as velocity(body shop). I trust these guys they are good and asian:P !! And they know their sh*t.
They are actually working all winter on a track car they are building, its an older civic with a K20 swap.
I went there for a few things already, prices are right, they are clean and quick, And their garage is so clean and well organized it actually makes me feel good that my car is there :P

Best deal on true synthetic oil is Esso XD3 0W30 direct from a distributor. Another option is pricematching Castrol 0W30 (Made in Germany) at PartSource (-10%) when it goes on sale at Canadian Tire ($6.99/L). Some have also had success adding an e-coupon from PS for this deal.
Best deal on not true synthetic is Motomaster Formula 1 synthetic when it goes on sale for $14.99/5L.
Best deal on dino oil that I have seen is Valvoline for $5/5L at Walmart.
If you don't DIY see if the shop will do it for you if you bring your own oil/filter and charge just labour ($10-15?). That should be significantly less than the $70 you were quoted.
Happy Shopping!
edit: as far as filters go i've got Carquest blue and WIX (USA) and they are exactly the same.

I want to know exactly what it was about it that you didn't like? Not just you, but for anyone that is commenting on their dislike of any particular motor oil?

Tires23 lists that as a sale price.. so it won't be on forever.

My guess is they have gone down. Had a MOTUL oil change done yesterday and it was easily $10 less than what it usually is after parts, labour, discount and taxes.
