View Full Version : HELP! Rear wiper motor removal

So i'm trying to remove the rear wiper motor (tested, it's fully dead) and I can't get the assembly out to save my life. There's a 23mm nut on the outside of the rear window, which seems to be holding the motor in place, but when I turn that nut, it just spins.
It's definitely attached to the motor, and I can turn the nut with a set of pliers... but it's not letting go.
Next step is to cut off the nut and go buy another one. I'm trying to avoid that, but i may just do that since it's easiest?
Any help... someone must have done this, no? Checked mazdas247, and I can't find any reference to people successfully removing that 23mm nut. :(

I dremeled mine off in Tim's lane way last year Paul, the only person i can think of who got it off clean was Brian, but as we know, Brians car isn't natural, its the purest form of perfection:P

Are you sure that the motor inside is not turning as you spin the 23mm nut outside? I was able to disassemble mine fine but the problem is that one of the plastic gears inside was broken in half...

so my motor has given up...
I lifted the cap off the back wiper and screwed off the bolt...
but what is the next step? I can't ge the rear wiper off for the life of me?
Is there a how to write up or instructions anywhere?

^You need the get to the wiper motor from the inside. Open the hatch and pull the plastic cover off to gain access. Once the cover is off, the next steps become evident.
NOTE: Take the cover off extremely carefully. If you don't you'll end up breaking off the clips which will cause copious amounts of rattle noise.

You need to remove the little 10mm nut that holds the wiper arm down.. Then take the wiper arm off. You do not, IIRC, need to touch the bug old 23mm nut. The 'stud' (for lack of better term) that petrudes through the hatch needs to be soaked in your favouriate pentrating oil. Then use hammer to gently knock it free. Then tackle from inside the car. I thin you need to open up the assembly, IIRC again (lol), to fully slide through that stud.
..and yes.. be careful with putting on/off the hatch cover. I broke a tad or two that holds the clips, so indeed it rattles. That reminds me to try and stick some rubber pads on it to preent some rattling

We've taken the 10mm nut off that holds the wiper down, we sprayed it with penetrating oil and we've knocked it with the hammer....
no luck at taking it off...
is there any other way of taking it off?
the hatch part i'm not worried about because i've already taken that off and seen the rest of the motor

So.. the wiper arm itself is off. Yes? I am quite certain that is is not possible to remove that stud from the outside. I think it had to slide out from the inside.. So, do make sure you taken things apart from the inside..
That stud does get seized. Happened to me. My rear wiper just stopped working. I had to free it from the rust, but it wasn't insanely difficult. I would suggest it - at this point - is not rusted in place.
Also.. if what is not coming off is that large 23mm nut.. don't worry. It doesn't come off.

The arm is press fit on the spline and held with the 10mm
It will come off with some gentle assistance from a lever once the 10mm is off.
There are three bolts inside the hatch, but one large one on the exterior.
