Diagnos a transmission problem

Car - 85 volks cabrio

Girlfriend was driving at 120 on highway. Suddenly pops out of fifth. Revs to a million and she pulls over. Caa tows home.

I drive car. It rattles when the clutch is out and it's in neutral. In gear, no noises, clutch grabs fine, tranny acts fine. But no fifth gear.

What could be wrong? Tranny shop says clutch and tranny are shot and need 1500 in work. I strongly disagree. I will have their exact quote shortly as I'm basing this on what my gf told me.

Check the shifter alignment in the shifter box and check for worn out linkages from the shifter to the trans.

Yah my gf has the same car and the linkages in hers need adjusting all the time.
