View Full Version : Looking for Winter Rubbers?

I'm having problems finding a winter tire that will fit our stock rims. If you run into a Michelin Alpin 205/50/16 and the shop has them in stock can you please contact me? I've been told some shops don't even have access to this stock cause it's been sold out (oh hold for the shop). Any tire that would fit the stock rims will be fine. I would like the size 195/50/16 but any near match will do fine. Keep your eyes open for me - thanks.

Dave:
$790 for a set of four. Q rated tire
Wheels Direct, not in stock. They will start to recieve them in a couple of weeks. I can ask them to put a set aside for you. Let me know.
Perrelli 210 Snowsports H rated! - BWM approved. $715 set of four. This is probably what I am putting on.
Everyone else:
There is not a lot of margin in Snow Tires, very competitive. But...... if we can get 10+ members together, we could look at a club discount. I am on the phone right now working out the details. We would have to come up with a lot of buy in, if we wanted a group buy. We would all have to decide on a tire also. If we have enough people we could divide the group into two types of tires: aggressive and "all around"
Feedback?

Wheel and Tire quoted me $667 (everything in) on the Michelin Alpin tires and $828 on the Pirelli 210 snow sport!
What the hell are these retailers doing with the prices?
I'd like to go with the Pirelli tires as they are the perfect fit and they will also match my summer tires!
Jason do you need a deposit on the Pirellis? Should we not shop around? I bet I can find a better price - gonna call Steelcase tires....
Okay called Steelcase and they quoted $750. Guess Jason has got us the best price - thanks Jason. I'm in for a set of the tires (is there anything else that will fit our cars but are cheaper. Don't feel good about spending that much on winter tires) but I don't need em now! When should we do the deposit and the actual buy? (I'm assuming $715 for the Pirellis means taxes removal of old, install, balance and everything else).

Dave I am going into visit my buddy at Wheels. Do you think there are others that want to spend around $715 on winters? If so, we may be able to work a deal.
I believe that the pricing includes installation. I will pass along the competitive pricing to see what he has to say about it.
If we can come up with 3 packages for the Club to decide on, we could really set up a big package discount.
Im thinking we work on the following:
1) Good Winter Tire with 15" Steelies.
2) Good Winter Tire with Stock P5 rims
3) Very good winter tire with Stock p5 Rims
What tires/brand/model fit into those combinations, Im not sure. Maybe we can determine that together.

who would be interested in a possible group buy?

Do the Pirellis qualify as a Very Good Tire? If so I feel so proud and rich! Nothing but the best shoes for my bitch. But really Jay, not many snowtires seem to be made for our Stock rims. It's a good idea to put a package together. Also please look for cheaper tires if possible. I was actually hoping to spend something in the $600 dollar range - but $715 is fine if it comes time to suck it up.

There was quite a few people interested when I asked before, but no one has replied to my posts when I got prices.
So I would take the responses with a grain of salt.
I on the other hand am sereously interested.
Do me a favor and humor me; check the prices I got from Superior Tire under my Snow tires/steelies topic vs the price you can get from Wheels.

Keep us posted boys i'm very interested to find out what would
be cheaper
Tires on our stock rims
or Steelies with rubber!

Nick. I think in the long run the steel rims and rubber will be cheaper. Seems like Steel and Rubber can run you $600 but the rubber alone to do the stock rims will cost $700. The stock size will always be more expensive than outfitting a 15'' rim with rubber when it comes to change the tires. If you are more concerned about price than looks then sell your stock rims and get steel and rubber. I, however, can't stand the look of steel rims so I will be using my stock rims. Winter is long in Canada, why spend all that time looking at your fine car dumped on 15'' steelies with chrome Canadian Tire hub caps?
Oh and for Jay:
Our engines are a 2.0L

I'm in for 15" steelies and good winter tires. Even if it's an average tire. My commute to work is like six kms. I just don't want my stock rims to start pitting.

it looks as though we may have some growing interest in a 15" Steelie + Winter Rubber package. I will investigate.

Hey Jay before you start checking....
Make sure to tell te shops that we all have four wheel disc brakes so we don't need the drum conversion upgrade for the steel rims that go on the back.

I am definitely interested in getting a set of steelies. Are there any offset considerations?
Also, it would be ideal if we could have a choice of winter rubber to choose from, whether its budget or performance you're focused on.
