View Full Version : Is the foglight shield touching a glass H3 Cover safe?

Hey all!

In the process of retrofitting these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250644049431&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123

Onto the P5 stock foglights. Upon opening the foglights up I noticed it has a shield on it to prevent the light from going upwards.

By placing the yellow "condom" on top of the H3 bulb and THEN screwing down the metal shield, I was able to "secure" the condom onto the fog light base without any other modifications.

My CONCERN is that, we all know how hot the P5 bulbs get -- do you think the heat on the metal shield would damage the condom?

I'll take pics as soon as I get home and paste it, I'm sure it'll help explain!

I believe that the "Condom" will eventually fall apart unless it is made of glass.

Have you thought about replacing the lights complete with a PIAA set.

why not just get real yellow bulbs?
and PIAA = overpriced junk

Yup, yellow bulbs were my first consideration, but after seeing the price of them (aside from the 1000000000000W cheap ass ebay ones) I declined.

I remembered about the JDM condom covers that were in my 91 integra (before I had to sell her) and figured I could retro fit.

They were $10 shipped to my door, from the states. I couldn't pass that up.

I also have Lamin-X covers to go on them after I finish the retro.

And yes, they are made of glass.

Pic in a sec...

laminx = garbage
they will melt/discolor from the heat

REAL yellow bulbs will give you much better fog light performance than that tacky bullshit you're putting on

alright, lamin-x aside
the glass cover you see in the pic -- touching metal -- that should NOT melt, right?

this is yellow glass, not glass that's been painted yellow or anything

thx

you might make the bulb get too hot and burn out/burst

I think I've got a set of yellow H3 bulbs in your interested.

I think from that picture that either the bulb is not the same size as OEM or perhaps the wrong bulb. I do not remember the bulb ever touching the shield on my car before I removed the OEM fogs, and I did change the bulbs several times.

My apologies, it's a bit difficult to see from the picture that the yellow 'condom' is what touches the shield, and there is a bulb inside of that.

Next time I'll try to take a better picture.

Anyways I'm just going to start sanding and repainting the foglights themselves so I can close em up and slap em bcak on the car. If the shields break, they break... what can ya do? It was only $10 anyways :)

I'll update this thread when it's time. Thanks for the input everyone!

EDIT: Does anyone have that link on "repairing fog lights" i.e. the step by step with pics on sanding, priming and repainting? I can't remember which brand or type of "chrome spray" i need... thanks in advance

EDIT2: Found it, thanks! (http://www.toprotege.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47218)

TheMan, I understand that higher quality parts obviously do light up the road better. Perhaps I should have stated my intentions...

I don't care to light the road up better. I just did an HID retro-fit on my car that lights up the roads like its daylight 4 cars in front of me, without blinding people (mmm sexy color-banded cutoff)

I am doing this YELLOW color strictly for my love of pure white headlights mixed with piss-golden yellow complimentary lights, just like my 91 Integra with JDM 1 Piece headlights (which is where these condoms originally came from).

So basically, I just want my fogs to be piss-golden yellow in color, and I could care less if they don't light up 20cm in front of me.

Anyways, I'll throw em back on the car this weekend after I refinish them and let you guys know.

Thanks!

Hmmmm?

Anyways...Having HID headlights and regular fogs suck. Doing HID fogs is OK, but I agree with what you did, Im running yellow fog bulbs.

I don't think the yellow cover touching the metal reflector thing is an issue, but I would run it for a bit and watch for any smoke or anything else.

Good suggestion -- I was contemplating HID fogs (since its easy to install) however a) the cutoff-shield from the P5 fogs would not house a H3C, H1 or D2S bulb, and b) the damn road is already so bright with a proper retrofit, I don't think any additional lightning can help at this point :)

Cheers Myk!

Dude...

If that is what you are doing, I 100% agree with the HID Yellow fog.

I did it to my winter beater which had HID stock, the retrofit of HID Fog is KILLER.

But you drive a P5 right?

I may consider a complete M3 Fog/HID retro if it works... and was as simple as the headlights...
