View Full Version : Which summer tire should I get?

Help me decide:
Fuzion ZRi $750/set
General UHPs $720/set
Yokohomo S.Drive $760/set
Sumitomo HTR Z III $610/set
Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport $710/set
I value handling, but I also want to get at least 3-4 seasons out of these tires.

I use Hankook Ventus RS-2's which have awesome handling. Can't tell you much about how long they last because I've had them for less than one summer so far.

Aren't Fuzion ZRis considered an all season, but amazing in summer and shit in winter? Either way, that was my vote. I ran that for a summer season, and loved them. They look good, drive amazing in went and dry, and are very quiet.

For what it is worth - I'm running RE760 Sports myself. 1st season with them was last summer. I found them quiet and comfortable. Held the road more than well enough in the dry and the same for the wet. During the insane down-pours we had last summer, the tires performed perfectly.
I did find them a tad bit lacking in steering repsonse. However, I think was tire-pressure related. I think I ran 34 in the front and 33 in the rear. This summer I'm going to start with 36 up front, 35 out back.

I really like the General UHPs as they are amazing in wet conditions (and it rained a lot last summer). They aren't as sticky as some higher performing tires but for the price/treadwear you can't argue their value. Close second would be the Toyo Proxes 4's for me, but they are a bit pricey being their only downfall.

If anything, yes. Wet traction is perfectly acceptable to me now, but as any tire wears its various characteristics will change. Tires will always been something very hard to review objectively anyways. I generally go by the overall rating and majority comments of a tire from Tire Rack.

I would completely ignore reviews like that guy's. I hate ppl that base their brand decisions upon 1 experience. Clearly either HE or the CAR is at fault for horrible wear characteristics, or he had a defective tires in some regard.
He is also driving an M3 with far more power, which is drastically different than a P5. Just normal driving will wear out the tires quicker then normal driving in a P5.

when you factor in that it is actually snow capable and likely the best rain tire in class. I think thats where my value judgement comes in. To someone who has dedicated snows, or doesnt care about wet, then sure in a dry for dry. Its very possible those other tires edge out the Conti DWS.
For me, the tire is a winners, because its performs, and some crazy engineer made the tire last for ever with a 540 tirewear rating. :)
For the same amount of money vs. the others, my money would be on the Conti's.

Actually , Conti is out to kinda change that mis conception. I have had the chance to interview Conti on these points. And in about a week I will heading out to their evaluation day to test the DWS and DW tires on their track setup. I have already purchased the tires after testing it on a WRX and on an EVO and it blew everyone away.
So the general rule that an All Season is a No Season tire is true since manufacturers make too many compromises in the process. Conti designed these from the ground up with with top priorities in mind. Right down to the construction of the tire and materials used. I was a fan of the Bridgestone 760's but because of their tire reinforcements it became a heavy tire and not too comfy for my tastes. On the track, it can and has won. But the DWS is pretty light weight. for the 245 40 18. the tire was about 6 pounds light per wheel. 6 pounds is a baby lol.
There is two weak spot to the DWS tires though.
One, the split pattern used in the design has a very slight numb spot in the middle that can be felt by anyone who seriously tracks their car and takes the tires to the limit.
Two, the sidewall is softer then any serious track tire. the design is acceptable by most dry racing standards, but alot of track guys felt it for sure.
My two cents.... :)

One question I need to ask: how many kilometres do you expect to drive/season? None of the above tires should get more then 15,000kms...
I had ZRIs and they lasted me two summers (12-15,000kms, don't know exactly) and they are down to just above the wear bars and will be replaced within the next couple of weeks.
991.8l
March 31st, 2010, 10:45 AM
^ That for me?
I drive about 15,000kms a season. My V rated Michelin HX MXM4s have lasted me 4 years and were rated 300 UTQG.. the Potenza are rated 340UTQG.. so I hope to get 3-4 years out of them as well. Granted they are a W rated tire. Note I do NOT track my car, just DD.. so I doubt I will wear them in 2 summers.
CulRidr
March 31st, 2010, 10:50 AM
Yes it was...and I don't track my car either. Just aggressive DD driving. Yours will probably last longer if you are light on the throttle and don't push it too hard in the corners, but then what's the point of having any of the tires mentioned in this thread/poll?
UTQG ratings mean very little and are by no means linear. The ZRIs are rated at 320 and there's NO way you'd ever get near 50,000kms...

I put high mileage on my protege and have the General Exclaim tires on and they have performed well and have alot of tread life. I think they are rated at 380 for treadlife. The thing is, its a tire that is hit or miss, i run into some people that love it, some people that have an issue. Not sure why.
^ I drive the snot out of my car :)
What do you recommend then, a high performance all season?
I would go All season, because then your getting into tires that can handle wet conditions. If your not tracking your car then there is no reason for you to grab a serious summer tire. It will burn off fast and you will be back in the same position 2 years from now. In my opinion your priority will be dry traction, wet traction, and treadlife.

Both are High performance tires, but for different things. DW is more surface contact design and softer compound to allow for the best amount of dry sticky grip. The DWS tire is a higher performance tire optimized for water and snow evacuation. Sacraficing Dry traction slightly. but not by much. Still dont think so, watch the Tire rack videos and see for yourself.

What's wrong with using jacks? If you were seriously lowered you'd appreciate jacks a lot more then lifts as some shops with ramps are hell for lowered cars. I don't think this is a valid reason for avoiding a shop at all. I find the better shops actually use jacks and also often use torque wrenches for tuner lugs instead of ruining them with impact guns.

Just because Tires23 has a lift doesn't mean they're better than those that don't. I've dealt with Simply Tires a couple times and never had an issue where as when I refereed a friend to Tires23 for a set of winters and his rear right wheel almost fell off when the lugs were only hand tight.

Thats a good point. Human error is tricky, even dealerships have that problem. Friend at work had his tires rotated and the wheel almost fell off on the way home.
I won't mention the problem one guy had at simply while I was there.. but I guess everyone makes mistakes. Its always a good idea to check your lugs before you drive home I guess.

I prefer Tire23 over Simply tire only because Tire23 is 10 min away and Simply is probably 25-30min away from me, just this time Simply tires gives a better deal and Tire23 said they won't match it.
I think Tire23 has a lot of walk in customers and make a line up very long for the spring/winter season. Simply tire, they arrange appointements and they hv a little waiting room with wifi and tea, coffee, cookies serving.
I do notice Simply tire didn't peel off the tire sticker completely when I got my RE760 and I peel the rest of the sticker by myself when the tires is already installed. Just a little mistake, but it is not perfect, lol

Did they use stick on (adhesive) weights? If so did they clean the rim properly before sticking them on? Also did you tape over them to ensure they stay on?

Ya they used stick on weights on both the inner and outer part of the rim (i understand the outer part, since my rims don't have a lip for weights - but usually they put clip on weights on the inner part). I have never taped over these before (i've had 3-4 sets of new tires using stick on weights and never had to do this.. including winter wheels).
I doubt they cleaned the inside of the rim. They also did not line up the yellow dot with the valve stem (not even close), so there are a ton of stick on weights on the rim.

The RE760s are asymetric, but do have a marking for inside (or outside - I forget). So the tires does need to be mounted to the rim in that regard too. Just double-check that.

ya all four yellow dots are facing outwards. I think I prob just threw a wheel weight. But if I can get them to re-mount to match up the yellow dots to the stems.. they would need less weights and there would be less of a chance for them to fly off. I will bring some tape I guess.. lol. duct tape FTL.
Guy at work recommends putting silicone to hold them in place.
Edit - So I spoke with Allen and he said hes been having problems with these tires.. they need to settle, add air pressure, then drive them, then let some air pressure out then rebalance....
I'm going back next week. He doesn't agree with the yellow dot... says its pointless.

Yesterday I went back to have the tires looked at.
He says of the 700 Potenza 760s he sold, 30 have come back with vibration problems on the highway. Its due to container rash cause by stacking the tires, the weight damages the bottom ones. 18" tires with this problem can't be fixed, but 17" hes had success with the following method:
1. Decrease PSI in the tire to 10psi, drive the car on them for 3-4 mins.
2. Re-inflate, and re-balance.
This would help make them round again. He did that yesterday... I drove home on the highway and everything was perfect... I was pretty happy.
This morning I had the exact same symptoms I had the previous morning. Feels like these tires develop flat spots over night, then I feel a thump thump at about 60, then 80 on the highway ramp, then at 110 the car vibrates... once the car tires warm up.. it seems to be fine. I believe it was 8 degrees this morning.. yesterday on the way home it was 20ish degrees.
Are these bad tires.. or do they just do this? My General UHPs don't vibrate in any temp and they are UHP Summers. I don't know what to do next... I may try to get them replaced under bridgestone's 30 day satisfaction guarantee.
I live right next to the highway.. the tires have zero time to warm up, so I would have this issue 5 days a week.
I'm going to try to increase the air pressure from 34/32 to 36/34 and see if that helps... the last time I felt no vibration I had 37/37.. so I will try that next. Stock pressure is 32/30.
I counted the wheel weights to make sure I didn't lose any this time. There are 2 & 3 on the front and 4 and 11 on the back... ya thats right 11.. lol.

I live right by the DVP myself. I do not have any of the problems you are describing, and I wouldn't put up with any of this BS any longer than necessary. With my new motor mounts I can finally hear the tires - or lack there of for noise. I find them quiet and I don't have any vibration. The RE760 is a great tire (I even ran RE750s too), but if it ain't working out for you, try something else. There are plenty other great choices.
Go yell at Bridgestone and say you want them replaced and some money back to keep your business.

Japan I believe.
Funny thing is that I cross-shopped prices between the US (driving to buffalo) and Canada.. and a lot of US made tires had savings of $2-300. Imported tires, like the Bridgestones only offered a $40-50 savings.

When I go back, should I ask for replacement tires of the same brand or try something else? My other option was Yoko S.Drives.. but Simply charges a lot more for them than Tires23 does.. I'm not paying more for a tire I didn't want in the first place.

My brother ran with S.Drives. I would say they would offer more grip and steering feel/response (stiffer side-wall) at the trade-off of treadlife and possibly a bit of road-noise. If Bridgestone won't give your money back or replace all 4 tires, or Simply Tire won't replace all four, get your money back from the retailer and buy something else.

225/50/17 would look good, but its a weird size..
225/45/17 is smaller than 215/50/17 so on a non-lowered TSX.. it looks 4x4. Lots of guys on TSXCLUB go that size and regret it, so they lower.. but thats not my plan.
