Do you guys know where to get steelies for cheap? Dealer wants $60 a piece for them and I think that's a rip. I have the tires already (Pirelli 210 195-55-15) so I need some 15".

And who's getting their car rust proofed? I'm thinking of doing it at Krown. Maybe we can have a group buy on this and get a better price?

I'm also looking into winter wheels. Need the whole deal, but not sure what or where to get. People were talking aobut 14s for winter...

As for rust proofing, i got mine done at Krown in Scarborough (near Cedarbrae) in April I think... it's pretty drippy stuff, but i just think if it doesn't drip, then how does it get into cracks and stuff... (and I live in a building, so I don't care about the ground where I park... but if you do, just put some paper down or something to minimize the drips onto the 'crete)

I was just thinking the same thing.
I need to get my car rust proofed within a couple of weeks.
I noticed when I installed my short shifter that I am getting some small rust spots under my car.

I volunteer my skills as a buyer to negotiate a deal with a rust proofing company.

I would probably need to get at least 10 people to be able to negotiate a good deal.

Anyone interested in a group discount?

And so the group buy begins!

I hope nobody minds if I take the bull by the horns on this.
(seeing as how I'm just a peasent member)jk

But seriously I do this stuff for a living, and could probably get a pretty good deal if I get enough people.

60$ each steely? that doesn't sound too bad!
but then again i'm brown.

yeah... i'm looking for a set of winters too....

luckily last year it didn't snow that much and i survived on the stocks, but they were horrible when it did snow. i couldn't even get up a simple sloped entrance to a plaze near my house.

i think the best size would be 185/60/15. this size minimizes the difference b/w your actual speed and speedometer reading so your mileage isn't thrown off.

so midnightp5, since you volunteered to do this, i say go for it. however, if you ever need help, then lemme know, i have a contact that owns Mississauga Tire (the biggest tire place in the Westside).

midnightp5: See if you can get a deal from Krown for rust proofing. I've heard they're pretty good...the stuff they use drips a bit but it won't attract dirt like the Vital stuff from FX auto.

As for wheels...a friend of mine has a set of Prelude 15" steelies and I think I'll go and see if they fit the P5. If not then I'm in whatever groupbuy you guys manage to setup.

Hell yeah!
Winter Tires are a must and steelies even better. Anyone who knows tires, treads and compounds would look at our OEM tire and laugh at those staunch on believing it is adequate for winter.

For those who never owned a set of winter tires, even cheap ones, you'll notice a difference. I've been thinking of steelies for a reasonable price myself so $60.00/pcs is the price to beat, and I thought that was quite good!

As for the specific tire size I've spotted some on-line speedometer calibrations somewhere on the net where you plug in your OEM and then the desired size and the % of speed your off is the result.

I think that the magic number choices were..,
P185/60/15's =0.3%difference
P185/65/14's=0.9% difference from the Miata Tire Calculator. Of course I plugged in my P5's O.E. P195/50/60's as a base.

The cheaper I can get my steelies, the more I can splurge on a better brand name and tread tire.
Tirerack.com helped me too!!

i know that costco and walmart sell steelies for pretty cheap, last i heard, it was like $35 or something like that......check that out.......might be worth the look.........i think the costco on 410 + steeles has an autoshop.......going to look for some tires + steelies in the next little while myself.......

Beside those that want to get together on rust proofing by Krown does anyone want to do a group DIY oil spray? We can take a trip to Can Tire and buy some stuff and spray in in the Burger King parking lot and leave all our junk there for the nice manager! LOL

Or 195/55/15 like the ones I got. Although I was going to get the size you mentioned but it happens that my friend is getting rid of his 2 months old snow tires for cheap so I pick them up for $300. If I have to get them brand new the tires alone will cost me $650.

Hell Yeah!
I was gonna go to Crappy Tire anyway and do it myself. I can concentrate where I know my cars have rusted in the past and just sheer common sense.

I really need to get under my car anyways and really see the setup and commit it to my new Shaolin memory chamber. Plus!, think of all the Cdn Tire bucks you'ld get and you could get some nice mods outta there wicked mod section. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif

I've been wanting to flaunt the gold chain license plate to go with my gold crown airfreshener to complete the Malton, Rexdale and Bramledesh look.

I like the sounds of that 185/60/15 size but I don't think anyone actually makes winter tires in that size! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

anyone ever go to Cobra on queensway? (for rust proof)

Rowan is right!
One has to be careful with hypothetical and wishful thinking when calculating tire sizes. Rare sizes are hard to find and exotic and expensive brands would be limited.

I'll have to browse through Tirerack.com and plug in some sizes sometime and then see the sucess rate of the closest calculation to the speedometer % difference. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif

Kieswetter had two deals last fall - I picked up the Michelin Pilot Alpin 195/55/15 with new 15" steelies and decent covers for $869 + tax ($1000 total). The cheaper tires, I think Hankook or some other kooky name, were ~ $100 cheaper. However I wanted the quality and could not find any info on the net on the cheaper ones. Info on the Michelins was positive.
My opinion: good V-rated tire, very sporty, quiet, smooth, not the best in snow - slid around a few times. Bridgestone doesn't make the 15" size Blizzak for us but may in 14" for those who want to go smaller. Can't beat Blizzak WS-15 in snow in my opinion but they wear quickly. I didn't have good luck with the newer, ice version on my Accord (don't recall the designation). Yokohama (600?) is good too.
On the undercoating, it's hard to beat Krown.
Hope that helps!

Mark

I was talking going full out on the rust proofing, and having them do the panels frame etc.

Not to knock anyone idea for an under spray, but I would feel pretty stupid if the first part on my car to rust was the door because I only got the car undercoated.

Besides I have tried to do an undercoat spray myself, and that spray stuff from Crappy Tire is messy as hell.

I'm going to post a new topic for a group rust proofing to see how many people are interested in seeing if we can get a group discount.

I got my steely & tires from a friend who is a mechanic. I chose the 15" Toyo & got them for $600 a set.

My friend is in the middle of moving his shop now so not sure if these are still available. If any of you are interested, post here & I'll ask him this weekend.

Dave, I'll check with my tuner if he still has some winter tires laying around... I bought a set of slightly used (1 winter only) 16" (205/50/16) Pirelli Winter tires a couple of months ago for $220.... What size are you looking for ?

I did my P5 at Krown a month ago...they get right into all the critical hidden areas such as rockers and inside the door panels, hatch, etc.. I watched the guy do it, and the oil mist was all over the place, which is good (except probably also into the guy's lungs, which is bad). Drips like crazy for a week or so. But the stuff works and they apply it properly. Needs it every year. Anyone gets 10% off just for CAA membership, so that's the minimum discount you should go for. They're $110 now before any discount.
