View Full Version : Tie rods?

Hey guys,

I've had a clunk from my P5 for a month or so now and I've been checking everything over periodically when I had time. Ball joints are still tight, shock bushings are good etc. Today I jacked it up for another look. When I grab a wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock position and try to turn slowly I don't feel any play. When I do it violently I can hear a clunk. Almost feels as if the rack is empty and slamming into fluid, if I do it slightly slower I can hear a bit of fluid movement. When I do it hard while the car (and PS pump) is running I don't have any play. The steering rack looks like it's secure when I do this. Anyone else have a mystery clunk? I've done a lot of searching the typical clunks are loose sway bar links, sway bar bushings worn, engine mount worn. Just looking for more ideas. I haven't pulled the inner tie rod boots off yet.

Doesn't sound like a tie rod end to me. If it were a tie-rod end the wheel would EASILY have movement side to side at 3 and 9 o'clock. I actually just changed an outter one on my dad's cx7 yesterday (a 15 min job that the dealer wanted $300 to do! I simply mic'd the clearance and installed the new one exactly to the same position... no alignment required.), it was bad.

CX7 with a worn tie rod end already? Damn

The clunk is killing me. I'm reluctant to give up and take it to Mazda again, as the last time I asked them to check and replace a wheel bearing they told me they only repack with grease...

Yes, he has like 140k or something ridiculous like that on it. But I think it was a massive pothole that did it in. He's also already had a wheel bearing replaced as well. On a side note, why did Mazda put the ***king PCV valve on the cx7 under the intake mani?!?!?! Stupid ***kers!!! It's impossible to get to!! Bunch of assholes.

Fak, sounds exactly like this, I hate it when people don't post their solution. Anyone got an account there that can post for a follow up?
