View Full Version : Oil pan

I recently had to replace an oil pan. It was leaking, because I did notice oil on the ground where I parked. When I took my car in for an oil change, they showed me the oil pan. But instead of a leak there was a steady stream of oil pouring out of it. It cost me 400 to replace the oil pan 115 for the actual part. I'm just wondering if I got set up, because if the car was leaking like that before I left my home I wouldnt have made it to the garage. Plus I would have seen a huge pool of oil underneath my car. I think it may be too late for me to do anything now, but it's my first car and I need to learn from this if need be. I think I may have put too much trust into the mechanics.

$400 seems a bit much but as you said its over now and you agreed to pay that price, not much you can do now.

depends if they had to replace the j-pipe too cause it was too brittle to re-use.

i changed mine by myself in about an hour and that included removal and installation of my header since it had to move due to the collector being in the way of a bolt or two.
so yeah....you got hosed. unless they put on a bunch of extra parts too.

oil pan is roughly $200 OE from Mazda, the gasket is $44 and it is an estimated 2.1 hour job. Also $10-$15 for the oil $6 for the filter... $400 looks a little steep but might not be far off. if any of the studs were as bad as mine they could have taken an extra hour to torch outta there.. I know this because I just got off the phone with the OMC Mazda dealership that we are sponsored by (Elite) and they just gave me the info seeing as im going in to get mine done Thursday!

^ Might as well get the AWR pan and do it yourself then if you're willing to pay that much for a simple pan swap. Oh and btw... if you really paid $44 for a gasket, which doesn't even exist!!!! You definitely got taken!

i was quoted about $120-140 from the dealership for the pan when i replaced mine. they didn't have one in stock (on a friday) so i just picked one up from napa for $100 tax. in and some permatex ultra copper gasket maker for about $5-10 and had it done the next day in about an hour crawling under the car on my back. i doubt it would take 2 hours at the dealer on the lift.
sounds like your going to get hosed too.

unfortuantly its true, arm and a leg for silicone at the dealer apparently.

^ That's just ridiculous. It doesn't even take 1/2 a tube to make the gasket.

yeah... 44 bucks doesn't sound too far off considering its over $20 *cost* here in the states... the quoted prices were retail rapage afteralll
but nobody except dealerships (and anal people like me) uses the OEM dow corning silicone..... the permatex RTV ultra gray (the correct shit to use anywhere that calls for sealant in our cars except for auto trannys) works fine but it isn't as strong/last as long... since the original poster more than likely had a shop do it, they probably used some random shit like black silicone for the oil pan and slapped it together... I'd expect at least 100-150 less for a rinkydink shop doing the job!

^ that sounds reasonable when you are paying someone to do it for you. and i agree about being under the car this time of year. luckily i have access to my parents garage which has its own high efficiency gas furnace. the only problem is you get covered in melting and ripping snow and slush the whole time.
