So I have a little issue with the car, in so much that my reverse lights don't work. I paid a dealership to do a transmission swap in the car (it was MTX, but tranny was busted) and ever since the dealership did the swap my reverse lights haven't worked. I'm going to look at the transaxle reverse switch on the alternator harness, but I think it's plugged in (last I saw).
If the harness isn't plugged in, I'm thinking of installing a little toggle switch connected directly to a 12v power supply (blue ignition wire) and have it control the reverse lights manually.
IIRC, it's a red/yellow wire under the centre console that controls the reverse lights, so i can just cut that and connect it to the switch and the 12v on the other side of the switch, right? I think that's all I need and I'll have reverse lights once again :D

are you actually going to remember to manually switch on your reverse lights every time you pull out of a parking spot?

doubtful. It took me like 6 months to realize I didn't have any reverse lights, lol.
But it'd be nice to have since I live in teh burbs, now, and it's not as well lit as downtown. I don't need to remember to flick it every time, just whenever I look back and see nothing, I have an option.

now you'd be able to turn them on when ever you feel like it.
say when some jack ass is tailgating you, you can just flick on your reverse lights and scare the crap outta the guy behind you

I followed a guy the other day who's reverse lights were on. We were on the highway. Was really strange, never seen that malfunction before. And yeah, I'm certain they were the reverse lights.

I was definitely thinking of that too, but didn't want to say it since some people have their periods on here and didn't feel like dealing with that flak.
I'll check out the legit way, first, then opt into the ghetto way.

When you say transmission swap, do you mean a different tranny? If you swapped, there may be a very easy fix. (If you don't know what it's out of, the bellhousings can be swapped to use any G series tranny for use with the FS) I had the same problem, the P5 reverse sensor didn't trigger as it's a shorter trigger. I swapped sensors with one from the tranny I'm using, voila. It's the sensor with two green wires, polarity doesn't matter.
Before it was fixed I backed up with the brakes on a bit to see. My friend opened the door to see when he borrowed it, the door caught the bumper of my mx6 scratching the paint and denting it, and bent my door right backward  The door has never been the same since.

after all these years dicking around with proteges, you still haven't learned to properly diagnose and fix them? like durwood says, what makes you think it's not the reverse switch that's bad? it's easy to swap it!

No, just tried to bend it all back into shape myself, re-aligned the fender to clear the door, now my gaps are all off, and the door is just not right. When my friend has money, I'm making him buy me a new door, and pay for the custom paint.

I stopped caring about this a long time ago, but I had an issue this week where I needed to back up, and someone was behind me.
I unplugged the sensor and it threw an ABS warning light, and plugged it back in and the light went away... but I still don't have reverse lights. I'm gonna call up Mazda on Monday and see how much the sensor is. I googled it, but can't find the sensor anywhere, so i'll have to rely on Mazda :(
