View Full Version : Compustar Hood Pin Problem

Hi all.
I am curious if anyone has this similar issue to me. I have a Compustar that I purchased from Audio Heaven in the summer and it had been working great for a while.
Over the last 2 months or so it seems to trip out whenever it rains.
The alarm constantly goes off with the brain thinking the hood is opened. I'm guessing it is either a faulty hood-pin or I have it adjusted incorrectly.
Anyone else ever hear about this?
A quick google search and I found the same question asked on a civic forum but nobody provided a resolution.
It's incredibly frustrating that I can't arm my car overnight on a rainy evening without the alarm waking me (and neighbors) up ever hour.
If I can't get a fix for this I will remove it but it's rather disappointing a product that is less than a year old fails so bad.

the issue is that the hood pin sensor is cheapass. What you want is a mecury based switch. I know lockdown used to sell them.
I just disabled my hood pin sensor and left the wires taped up. same thing happened to me with the rain.

Must have a crappy spot. Never had an issue with mine. Though I did end up buying a mercury switch for one day when the pin breaks. The pins are crapass. Been working well for me though surprisingly.

the water causes it to ground and hence thinks its open and it goes off.
As red-i said you wanna get the mercury switch (Basically its a sealed unit that if the hood opens the murcury will slide back and ground the 2 points within the unit causing it to go off)
Should could you about 15 bucks for it

Audio Heaven can change it to Mercury switch. Call and talk with Jeff. Good peeps.
Also to add, it doesn't happen to all the pins. I have compustar on both my cars and both have pins. One car sets off in the rain (same as ew2) and the other has no problems with rain, snow, moisture and so on.
Luck of the draw.

How do I disable it for now? get under and unplug it from the brain?
or just snip the wires?

Luck of the draw.
Identical placement, install, hood, fender, weather stripping?

Mmmm Stripping. Not identical, but similar placement. One car has CF hood and other car does not. One fills with ultra 94 and the other with regular 87. The other day my mechanic said "hey man, those are sweet looking rx8 wheels". I just politely nodded and said thanks man. I had chicken and green beans for dinner that night. It was pretty sweet. There are many other variables in either situation too, so yes, there def. are other factors to consider before blaming it on chance. I also usually drive one car with pants and the other, well ... I go pantless.

the wires easily disconnect from the pin. just pull down and they'll pop off. the pin has little tabs on the bottom, and the wires have metal thingys that slide over the tabs (can't remember if it's 1 or 2 wires to the pin sensor)
Thanks doods.

Yatru.
That picture was actually my deciding factor in which system to go with. I thought it was common sense.

I disconnected the wire and you were right. It is a Female spade connector on the wire and a male connector on the pin. Single wire, it just slid right off. Wrapped it up the wire end in rubber with a bit of spermicidal lube. Don't want that troublesome hood pin to give my girl any more problems then she already has ;)
Thanks for all the tips guys. JTT though.

^ That looks like the one Audio Heaven uses (at least this is what they used when I had my Compustar installed back in 2006).

Hey Jeff! I didn't know that. However if you recall our conversation via PM's I purchased the unit from you, but had it installed by a friend in my driveway.
Is this still covered as a hardware replacement? I dont think it has anything to do with the installation unless it's something im unaware of.
On the + after I disconnected the pin it hasn't been an issue. So the pin was definitely the source of the problem.

All you need to do is insulate where the connectors are, which is below the spring, and the bottom of the whole. use electrical tape of those heat shrink wrap things. Either or, problem solved for les than a dollar. and about 5 mins of ur time.

Ahh I would suggest buying a mercury sensor and that would solve all your problems :)

I use one of these cheapos and it's been working great for years
http://www.cliffordproductsdirect.com/online_shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=9&products_id=57
but, I recommend the OEM setup instead
it uses the same switch as the millenia, but the bracket is unique only to the UK protege... the bracket mounts under the driver's side radiator bracket... big and high quality conventional switch... looks good too.. I would've gone that route if my autoexe intake didn't get in the way!
