View Full Version : squeal

ummm question.... a local shop told me that my clutch was making the squeal i keep hearing when I take off from a dead stop.... now I have never heard of a clutch squealing... the sound is like a belt slipping... it only happens when I first take off from a dead stop, and it becomes louder if I am on an incline. Just wondering if any other wrenchers out there have a theory about what it could be. FYI all belts and seals have been replaced with Mazda OEM parts so it shouldn't be a belt...
I was thinking maybe a bearing or something that is blown up, but I don't know quite enough about cars to say...

check the tension of your belts?
It could be just a bit slack allowing it to slip under heavy load.

Maybe the throwout bearing, I've heard those squeak.

ya know it's possible the douche bags didn't replace the throwout bearing when they did my clutch.... I had a new ACT stage 1 clutch put in (less than 15000km on it now), and I know my flywheel was resurfaced, but I didn't specifically ask for a new throwout bearning..... ugh..... i'm sure that will be hundreds of dollars to replace if it is squealing..... I don't think it is the belts because it was squealing before I had the belts replaced and still squealed afterwards. Now that I have been really thinking about it this squeal started about a month or so after the clutch was done and wasn't doing it before so I guess it could have something to do with it....

ACT kits come with a shitty throwout bearing... I always tell people to toss it in the trash and get a mazda one (which is still shit but better)... I upgraded mine to a mazdaspeed one for a turbo II last year

thanks for the pm.... i didn't know that the act bearing was shit... just out of curiosity, but is a bearing replacement a shop job or could i possibly do this in my garage at home?

you can do it at home, but its not easy since its the same as changing the clutch yourself! tranny will HAVE to come out!
ACT doesn't make the bearings, they just use whatever cheapest shit they can put in the box... I know people who ran their clutches in their proteges... their clutches work great, but the throwout bearings made horrible noises not long after the installs!
easiest way obviously is to just get a stock mazda (koyo) bearing and be done with it... but I had a stock nonturbo clutch and after driving with it spiritedly for 120000km, the bearing damn near fell apart! I still have it so I can show people how shitty the stock one is (imagine how much more shitty an aftermarket is)... the bearing had tons of runout and made noises at times at idle out of gear
so knowing this and doing lots of research, I came up with adapting the mazdaspeed throwout bearing that is designed to go with their triple plate clutch in a turbo II rx7... it fits but involves grinding out part of the case because it's so big... it's good for 8000rpm and it's been solid so far!
I can get them and I will be driving up to TO in a couple of weeks... I can get some and bring them up (no box) if you guys are willing to pay up front first... from there I can deliver to local meets or mail them by canada post
look here for pics of it:

this is NOT for everyone... you only need this if you have a performance clutch and you WILL drive your car hard and do lots of high rpm shifts!

I'd never come across that thread when I was doing my research about the LSD: I guess I stuck with the install thread and never went further. I did get the release pin and fork though, just not that bearing (mind you that's not a big deal since I didn't go with an "aftermarket bullshit" clutch).
Great read I'll admit. The only thing I'd disagree with is that the Fidanza is a far cry from "unstreetable". I have one in my build and the only 2 drawbacks with it (the first of which could possibly be remedied with the EDM throttle body I read about in one of your recent posts) are:
1. The RPMs fly a little too quick for my liking when trying to get going from a standstill at a normal pace.
2. Engine braking is rather ineffective due to the lower mass of the flywheel, which is a little annoying, but I can live with that.

it's unstreetable because there's no mass in the flywheel... you always have to rev the engine up to take off! I can still slip the clutch with barely any gas... it's not as good as stock where I don't have to use any gas at all, but it's still not bad... having to slip the shit out of the clutch with a super light flywheel means the clutch just wears out faster
anyway, I checked the prices on the throwout bearings and it's going to be 45 bucks... I guess another 10 bucks to ship it by canada post? I don't know, I'll have to weigh and see where it's going to
there's 7 I can readily get from my source right now... I really don't think more than a few people are going for this anyway

it sounds like we are talking about something very secretive..... lol anyway you mentioned that the bearing had to be modified slightly..... is this going to be difficult or something that a shop could do very quickly? I am going to have my clutch looked at sooner or later just to make sure it's not on the verge of exploding while they are taking a peek might as well throw in the new bearing...

you don't modify the bearing, you modify the tranny case
look in the pics in my thread and you'll see where I dremeled it out!

1 week to go before I'm on the road... so I'll start taking money for them so I can pick up the bearings sometime next week!
I'll need to know if it's going to be local pickup (like at the picnic), or if I will be mailing it... if I'm mailing it, I'll need your postal code so I can estimate shipping!
PM me for my paypal info
