Hi y'all,
I'll be doing a bit of canoeing this weekend and will be transporting the canoe on top of my car. I have the foam inserts that fit between the roof of the car and sides of the canoe to prevent scratches on the car and slippage of the canoe. Ropes attached to the head and tail of the canoe will be fastened to the front and back of the car respectively
Anyone done this before? Any problems or any advice?
Thanx

Hey my dad is a huge fisherman and always had a canoe on top of the old 323 wagon. It actually fit inside our garage with the canoe still on it! Anyways get a roof rack! The canoe is going to move a little bit no matter what.
I have never seen the foam things before but I would be worried about the movement of the canoe making the foam rub the car. Dust and dirt will probably get between the foam and your paint and grind away at your paint. Seriusly no matter how tight you tie down the canoe it will rock a little from wind and bumps. Use good ropes and do them good and tight.
Watch out for cross winds too your car will get blown arround twice as much as before.
Thats all I can remember from back in the fishing out of the canoe days with the min-cota engine whirring away while the sun beats down on me and I ask my dad to go home but he says "Jus hang on nu man! Mek we jus go roun di point one more time! I got a few nibbles di laaaaas time! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

We used those foam block things a few times. Took two canoes about 400km's with those (seperate times). Worked pretty well. They were soft enough that they didn't do any major damage to the paint..light swirls. Make sure to use good rope, and double it up. I've heard to many stories of canoes coming off in emergency braking etc http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Mind you most of them seem to be from back in the day when cedar strip canoes were common http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies. I had a canoe strapped on top of my ride this weekend. The canoe rested on the foam inserts and strapped on with webbing. I had no problems with the transport. My one complaint is that the only point that any straps can be secured to the back of the car is offset to the right side. As a result, the canoe had a tendancy of shifting to one side. Anyway, I'm contemplating getting a hitch for my car now.
