Does Mazda have an equivalent engine to Ford's Focus SVT? That little 2.0L produces 170hp NA. Wonder if that work in a Protege.

Not sure, but you might want the tranny as well, 6spd FTW....
Almost regret not buying one in 2003 when I was considering it... but it still looked like a Focus, big drawback! Nice and quick though...

uhhh NO
the FS-ZE is completely different!
the focus uses NO mazda engines and no mazda uses any of focus's engines

I kinda thought with their relationship with Ford, there might be some crossover but doesn't look like it. Apparently the Zetec SE can be swapped into the Tribute but still researching.
Is the FS-ZE the JDM version of our motor?

Agreed, I read the question as, does Mazda have a 170hp 4 banger that would work in a Protege. To which Joe answered correctly, it's called the FS-ZE. He didn't ask, does Mazda use the same 170hp motor, the question asked about an equivalent.

Seems that FS-ZE is as rare as it gets too.
I'm curious why manufacturers basically detune North American spec cars, there seems to be a lot of Euro and JDM spec models that are much higher in HP. Are they not as emission friendly, is thats whats behind it. Because I'm sure these models use higher octane, more fuel, cat less maybe, aggressive programming, and some internals.

The question reads as TheMAN answered it, would the SVT engine work in a Protege....
I also understand CC's response, but wasn't clear on it. I would have thought the same as TheMAN.

^ he said equivalent not the same... equivalent implies different but with similar characteristics... the same would have implied the same

It was kinda of a 2 part question. I figured with the Mazda/Ford relationship was there a Mazda equivalent engine, just thought the SVT motor could possibly crossover. I'm sure anything is possible.

Limits are dependant on the depth of your pockets... :P

Its def. not impossible, not exactly plug and play, maybe a v6 swap is a little easier but I did look into this many moons ago, may not be worth the trouble unless you had acess to a cheap donor

Guess I just like the idea Cosworth had their hands on it. :) But again they did with the MZR too.

Other options:
2.0 or 2.3 MZR. The MZR will easily make 170hp at the crank with bolt ons.
Any 2.5 KL series V6
...or my personal engine of choice:
2 litre BP-ZE (http://www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?deptid=5661&parentid=0&stocknumber=04-02000)
Keith Tanner's Miata makes close to 170whp in his Miata with that engine, and over 150lb-ft of torque too.
