Anyone have one of these?
What brand?
model
waht do you like or dislike about it?
I picked one up early last year, I ONLY use this in states that its Legal NEVER in Canada. I only have it in my car when I am in route to the U.S. in which time the unit is in my trunk in a suitcase and the power supply is in another compartment.
I don't really speed much usually 20km/h on the highway @ most in the states maybe 10mp/h over. I like knowing where police hide, I usually make a mark on the map when driving as to where the unit went off.
I don't have he model number of mine but it is a cobra and it works well, witht he comination of lights that come on it tells you if the radar is in front behind or beside you (overpasses).
As well it tells you of different emergency vehicles in the area (ambulance, firetruck and even some tow trucks) The only way to gauge the distance of the radar is by the sound of the beeping gettting louder and more frequent.
I am looking to upgrade soon as I will be going to the US again in July and wanted some suggestions or maybe even url's to places members have used in the past.
Thanks for looking.

wrong, it is legal to use these in certain provinces such as BC, alberta, and sask

I don't understand why you would buy a high end radar detector for something your rarely going to use
I have lived here for almost 5 years, I have a fairly cheap one but I very very rarely use it

The majority of them do not work.
I dont care what anyone says or any studies by the companies or whoever.
They do not work.
Sure the odd time it may help you, but I have tested many out with friends and I have dinged them every single time.
With the new LIDAR technology, you are tagged in many occassions before the thing even goes off.
They do not cover the rear very well and they do not cover the sides of your car at angles at all.
Dont bother wasting your money.
By that hair staightener for Naz instead.

you're right... majority
the valentine 1 and escort 8500 always have been top performers
I have an old version of the escort and still rocking it... but if I were to start over, I won't buy anything ever again... the time it saves you is a 50/50 chance (because cops gotten smart and been using "instant on" radar instead of just driving or waiting with their radar on)... so I don't haul too much ass anymore...
I still use it because it sometimes "reminds" me to check my speed... the other day I was just driving to the dealer and it sudden went off... checked my speed and was only doing 5mph over but I looked around, no cop in sight.. I kept to the speed limit anyway... a mile later, I finally see him waiting at a stop light... yes, the escort picks up that good... don't let anyone who just swears by valentines only tell you escorts suck! they both kick ass but the valentine edge out only slightly better
is it really worth the high cost? I personally don't think so anymore, but its up to you to decide

Remember, LiDAR, is a Laser, that travels to and from the unit at the speed of light.
No detector will catch that.
LiDAR then does thousands of mathematical calculations in that time to determine your speed.
You wont beat it, unless you are in Peel, They still use ragetity old RaDAR.

SOMETIMES if there is heavy traffic and the cop is using it, it *can* save you... happened to me a few times... just by the cop waving the laser gun around or it bouncing off other cars was enough to set mine off
but usually when you see it go off, you might as well start pulling over right away

That is the feedback I was looking for, yes it might be a bit expensive but really its good to have. as for usage of it I would say I would use it at LEASt once a month, I am always in the states.

Don't the higher-end ones have a device to delay the laser for like a second or 2 before the gun gets the reading?
The reason for that is it gives the driver enough time to slow down.

They claim they do.
OK, here is the secret then.
What you want is a LiDAR Jammer. It mounts on the front/rear of your car say on the licence plates and emits pulses of light that when received by the LiDAR unit confuses it and either gives a false speed or an error. LiDAR sends out the light beam/laser, and when it bounces back and is recieved by the unit, thats how the speed is measured.
Add your own light beam and you defeat the unit.

Question: Those gray flat(non shiny surface) license plate covers that you could buy, would those minimize the chance of reflection? Especially those smoked gray covers that have aged and the surface is rough to the touch.
If so, would an officer still point the lidar beam at it? or would he target the headlights?
Thanks!

No, those plate covers do not work. There ae so many places to hit the front, side, rear of a car it doesn;t matter.
I will say, Corvettes and Dodge Stealths are a pain because they have such a low/sloped profile.

Bingo!
But prepared to fork out more than a grand for these. A few of my friends have them and they work(used in places that are legal) wonders.:)

or you can just stop hauling so much ass and do 5-10 over max... just going with the flow but not fast enough where you can't slam on the brakes and get back to the speed limit in less than a second
