View Full Version : Brullen Down Tube.

For $150 I had my second cat removed and replaced with 2.25'' mandrel bent tubing "a la" Brullen style. I must say that it is the best performance value I have ever felt before. When I cruise at 140km/h the engine does not resist and bog down at all. It revs freely and you can notice performance gains especially at the higher end of the RPM gauge. I don't hype what does not deserve praise but this Down Tube made an excellent compliment to the rest of my system.
I'm sure people will ask
Q: "what about emissions? Will I pass?"
A: "Shut up - you get to keep the stock cat so replace when you need too"
Q: "will is make more noise?"
A: "My exhaust was really quiet before, there was only a little gain in noise level"
Q: "When is it available?"
A: "Right now. A jig was built and they can be made in an afternoon and installed in one hour"

Did you actually remove your catalytic converter? Or is there two altogether?

Removed, only one cat left right after header.

so u said u felt some high ends,
did u gain ne torque, acceleration
from a complete stop?
i'm more interested in acceleration than top speed...

Gains are felt from 4000 rpm and up so if you are accelerating in the powerband, yes there is a gain. You'll squeal your second gear harder.

can you get this down pipe without a custom exhaust like yours? meaning, can you get this down pipe to fit a stock exhaust system?

huh??
I've never squeeled second gear. And I've tried.

All you guys can thank me for this. My car the the ginny pig. Navy is right about the power gains. I put my stock exhaust system back in and my car is a snail now. Next week it's back to brullen for a full exhaust system.
Don't ask question on will it void my warrenty. Well it probley will and if you have to ask then you might not want to do it.

Chops. Yes the down tube will fit the stock system and should work very well.
Bumble.... never squeaked second? Oh my wonder what's wrong. I can do it everytime for about three feet. It's gotta be a quick shift with the power on the gas to keep the revs up and in the powerband. Similar to launching your car from a stand still the clutch is used for modulation and the gas is held steady in the power band.

uhm isn't that power shifting? you're not letting up on the gas between shifts right?
well I let up between shifts. It's easier on the tranny.
My lasty car second would sqeel for about 3 ft and thats lifting the throttle between shifts.

I don't call it "power shifting" but I guess everyone has their own terms. This is THE way to shift a 4cylinder car when racing. Since I thought I read you say something to the effect of "I have tried to squeak second" I assumed you were trying "power shifting". Lastly "power shifting" does not blow trannies if done properly. In fact the shifts can seem seamless and as smooth as an automatic. It all boils down to clutch control and matching revs with the gas. I've never screwed a tranny cause I know what I'm doing unlike drivers like Kurt who drops his tranny on the road cause he doesn't have the WESTSIDE skillz.
Curse my cocky attitude but you really ought to drive your car like the high reving machine that it was designed to be.

I don't know about high reving machine. The power drops off at around 5000rpm. I used to drive a 98 Prelude. That was a high reving machine. If you wern't above 5500rpm then you were not in the power.
As for the shifting. Yes I have tried to squeel second. But I guess my style of shifting doesn't get this car to squeel.

You must make the trip between 4500 - 5800 rpm. That is rather on the high side of OUR RPM gauges. If you want power you will have to stay in this range (thus high reving machine as opposed to low revs like at around 2000-3000). I didn't mean a high reving machine compared to an S2000 - but you knew that already, I'm sure you're just being an ass on purpose (I hope so for your sake).

yea I figured I would use a page from you're book. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
I've driven my P5 all around the rpm's but for me I've found the power range is about from 3500 to 5500. So just about were you said.

I was told that removing the one at the header was the better bet. It was to help low-end torque. Anyone else speak to this?

I should be able to tell ya soon. Tjat first one is damn heavy and it gets very tight right after it. By doing so you should see very noticeable improvements.

I chirped 3rd on Sunday.....and before everyone calls me a lier I will clarify:
I was going at a good speed and hit a dip just as I was banging 3rd...I guess the car got almost airborn with no weight on the wheels and it let out a little chirp but goddammit I chirped 3rd and I had a witness in the car! He drives a sick civic and his eyes popped out of his head as he said "I know I didn't just hear that....I can barely make my car chirp 3rd!!!"
Thats right tell all your friends....I will be signing autographs at the meet on Wed!

Also,
I consider "power shifting" to be without using the clutch
"banging" the gears is when I keep the gas pinned but still use the clutch
Thats my definitions...maybe not others
