Hi everyone, I couldn't figure out the right section to post this under, so if someone needs to move it, please feel free to move it around.

I've run into a problem with my gf's 2003 Sunfire car locks. (she doesn't have power locks and was expensive to replace, so I'm not going to do that) I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I can do to help her out, short of replacing the car.

So the history is that she's always had problems with the car locks, she used to live downtown and parked on the street, so the car doors frequently froze shut and tight. The last 2 years, I was able to resolve this issue with some silicone grease on the rubber gaskets around the door, about 2 times each winter. The door locks also froze on a regular basis, I treated this with rubbing our a pencil on the car key a few times and inserting and turning it a few times, and then applying once a day for a week of Lock Deicer with Teflon, and again, once every 4-6 weeks there after through out the winter.

Yesterday, her locks froze again. She tried the lock deicer, and used one of the Eddie Bauer battery operated key hole heaters for about 10 minutes and finally gave up and took my car to work, and I spent 30 minutes working on her car locks. I tried a hair dryer for about 10 minutes to a lock, multiple uses of the lock deicer, still no luck, I finally got her trunk to pop and crawled through it (her dinky little 2 door Sunfire) and almost broke my finger trying to unlock the door from the inside. It was so tight (and my hands were so cold by then) that pulling the little lock switch inside the car took several attempts. I finally set up a catalytic heater in the car on the passenger door and ran inside. After 15 minutes, I went out and tried the locks again (it was unlocked and I opened the door to try turning the key and I still couldn't. Long story short, I spent about 45 minutes with lock deicers and various heat sources trying to loose the damn things and I couldn't.

I would take it to the dealership, but I'm afraid they will tell me to get new doors or something stupid like that. Any ideas how to loosen these damn locks and keep them from freezing again?

my sister has the same problem with her 2001 sunfire. Its very common with that vehicle. hers only does it on the driver side.....so she has learnt to live with it :) and does one of the following:

A: doesnt lock the door (whos going to steel it? its a POS sunfire) and doesn't have to wurry about the locks freezing.

B: she uses the passenger door to get in, flicks the drivers door lock maunally by reaching accross and the walks around the car and get sin.

I thought about maybe replacing the lock cylinders but its not wurth it IMO

Ouch, sounds like its time for some new door locks.. no way it can freeze like that every day. Mine only freeze after a car wash.

I think that is absolutely the best option! I didn't even think of that!

I do this in my Tracker. I just take all my belongings with me.

Lol no one's gonna steal a Tracker. Plus I have an "immobilizing" chip that needs to be put in before it can be started.

Just picked up a Sunfire this past weekend for the gf, have not experienced this issue yet. If we have this issue I've got a can of spray I got from GM a couple years ago that fixed a set of seized door locks.

Yeah, we didn't lock the door the last few days. Usually it's just her drivers side only, but yesterday it was all of the locks. Absolutely brutal. There's no way, I should have to spent 45 minutes on a lock to get into the car. Any idea what lock cylinders go for?

Ooh, I wonder if I can go to any GM place and pick up a bottle...

i'm sure they're cheap, its the labour that will kill you... and in the winter DIY is hard.

i've had a similar issue with my neon. ended up tearing the door panels off and lubing the shit out (like major dripping mess) of everything to do with the lock mechanism with white lithium grease. haven't had an issue since.

I had a quote for new lock cylinders when I had the issue with them being seized. The quote I got for the 2 door car was around $300 at the dealership, bought the bottle of lock cylinder lube for about $10 and after working on each lock for about 30 minutes they were good as new.

Should be available at the parts department of any GM dealer.

Thanks, I think I will try that first. I'll go to GM and pick up a bottle of Lock Cynlinder Lubricant and go by my parents to borrow their garage to work on it for half a day. The problem with taking off the door panels in the winter (at least for me) is how cold your hands get. Wearing gloves, I'm always weary of ripping something, but without gloves, you have trouble feeling what you need to feel. But this is a great tip, I think I will try it first. Thanks again guys.

My last car was a Sunfire and it wasn't a POS (Cocco hehe) but I did have this issue.

Thankfully I had a sedan then, as both front doors would be frozen shut so I found the only one that really wasn't too badily frozen was the door behind the passenger side. I just would have to crawl from the back to the front each time.

I did find though that whenever GM put their lubricant on the rubber it wouldn't get stuck but when it wore off it was a battle.

/\ WD-40. WD=Water Displacement.

And the 40 is for their 40th attempt at the product. Had the got the formula down sooner we could all be using WD-37.
