What's the single best modification you can do to your car to increase performance?
edit: "tire" is supposed to be "tires," whups...

Without a doubt from the list, the best performance increase will be from forced air induction, even on street tires! Nothing like boosting your HP's and torque!! Put "on a budget" in there, and that would change everything!! lol (Of course, I'm thinking straight line performance for the most part)

The best performance mod you can do for the protege is to drive it to the dealership, and trade it in

Josh when you say forced induction do you mean turbo / supercharger or do you mean one of those ram air style hoods?
turbo / supercharger will win over any of those mods except if the car already has it :) then the pcm would probably be the best choice

when you say increase performance? Do you mean increase Torque? Increase Horsepower? Improve Handling? Increase fuel Economy? It's sort of a loaded question.

I'd say tires, they are the only thing touching the road, and without good tires everything else is wasted.

I voted tires, because you can slap a turbo/super charger on a car, and if it still has shitty tires, a car that is otherwise equally prepared in a track situation (where is the only place you can get the most out of a car), the tires will shine above power.

I voted tires too, obviously. A turbo only makes you faster in a straight line; tires increase acceleration, cornering, braking, steering feel.
I didn't mean it as a loaded question. You can make your own definition to "increase performance."

I said tires. But if I were into drag racing I could see FI helping out more than tires.

voted for tires because they will make a car better in basically almost every racing discipline. drag, drift, autox, circuit etc. if you upgrade tires you will always do better, even if its only a little bit.

from the list: tires
not on the list: a driving course.

Forced Induction meaning adding a turbo/supercharger??? so intake, downpipe, ecu all need to be changed?

Forced Induction (even tho its not a single mode), then ECU, then Tires IMO.

I actually think you could have multiple answers, depending on your definition of performance, however, since power without control/feel is pretty pointless (considering the underlying philosophy of the design of the Protege), I think you should of included "Bracing" in your list, and generalized "Springs" with Suspension (to include struts).
The biggest jump I have felt in my car in terms of performance was 1) when I dropped in the RD style Injen, and 2) when I put on better tyres than stock, and 3) upgraded my front and rear sway bars. 1) I could see and hear the gain, 2) I could sense with how sticky the car was in turns, and 3) I could feel how much more tighter the car was to handle.
I love all 3, and its hard to chose one over the other. After each mod, I could tell the difference, and each mod resulted in a different impact on me as the driver.
Not sure how much more I will feel when the header is swapped out and the entire exhaust system is replaced, or when the tie bar and rear strut brace is installed, but I'm sure looking forward to it.

Just Power-Basic Intake and Exhaust
More Power-Forced Induction, but no use if the above are stock
All around, tires, depending on the car.

The single most noticable performance improvement would be tires.
Better stopping distances, better cornering and arguably, slightly better acceleration. Assuming a softer compound in the stock size and on stock rims.

First thing i did on my car was tires. It was a crazy difference for handling + i bought my car in the winter with Winter rubber, so my performance went through the roof! haha.
Second thing i would do for sound, would be an intake - forget about the exhaust for a while - and if you want exhaust, get Vibrant - amazing tone and sound.
Third, for apperance, Lights (headlights, Turn Signals, and LED License Plate lights - just don't put BLUE LED ones in lol, you'll get a ticket most likely, from personal experience:o ).
After that, i was extremely happy with my Whip!

Other than tires....I would consider 'brake pads' as a performance mod.

Puh-leeze! Don't you know, the best way to increase performance is to put a "Z" in front of a random number in the 20's?
Put a Z in front of 24, and BAM! Your Cavalier is a rocket!
Put a Z in front of 26, and BAM! Your Beretta gets 1.10g on the skidpad!
Of course, noone can forget the Cavalier Z22. That puppy stops from 60 mph in 99 feet and goes through the slalom at 72 mph.

How about the Sunfire GTX?
Now the serious reply.
I don't really think there is one single mod that is the best to increase performance. For example, Forced induction (to do it right) requires not only the turbo goodies, but then also an exhaust upgrade and an upgraded PCM to get the most out of it.
Springs can always go with better shocks/struts.
Shocks/struts go with springs etc..
CAI or SRI is good, but tons of cars really don't gain that much from them.
Shift kit? Well, automatics are for sissies, enough said there.
Tires, well, thats hard to argue. Maybe tires.
Scooter

^ You could argue that tires are useless without some sick 22" dubs to mount them on. Otherwise they don't get you much performance just rolling them on the ground with your hands :p
