Recently 1-3 settings on my fan for 1999 Mazda Protege called it quits... the A/C also did not work in fan setting number 4. After speaking with my fellow TOP members, I decided it was my fan blower resistor that had gone bad after 10 faithful years.... I picked up a new resistor for about $35 from Mazda and installed it myself... easiest thing I ever did.

Tools required: 1 Philips Screw Driver

Step 1:

Remove the glove box by pushing in the tabs on each side and then glidding it out of the hook at the bottom.

Step 2:

Identify the resistor chip in the area behind the glove box... you'll see a wire running into the back of it.

Step 3:

Remove the two screws holding the resistor, note that you may need to pry the resistor loose from the weather stripping that holds it snug.

Step 4:

Remove the resistor and unplug the wire from it... note you may need to move a fan switch wire out of the way in order to pull it free. This should be your final result... notice how nasty the old part looks!

Step 5:

Plug in and install your new "Made in Japan" resistor and pray that it lasts you another 10 years. :) Reattach the screws, and reinstall the glove box. You are done! :D

It's always nice when it's a cheap fix.

did you have the problem of the A/C flickering, or had you lost the actual blower fan?

Lost the blower fan for 1-3, and the A/C would be on for only those settings. On setting 4 had full fan but no A/C, light would not illuminate.

my blower fan works fine in all settings but ac only works on 1, heat works fine in all settings as well. would that be my resistor too?

The local parts guys in the uk scoted me out

£47 quid for a resistor pack though! Ouch!

At least i now have aircon again

Does anyone know if this would cause your aircon not to work? I orinally thought it may have been low on gass causeing it to cut in and out however it appears to be working much better now:D

if no air is moving (blower fan not working), then your A/C won't work!

^ Most likely the fan switch.. there is a thread by distr0 & Typhoonk where they took apart the switch and fixed the problem.

Edit - Found the thread:

Confirm. This is for the Fan Blower? If the fan works on all numbers, but the green AC light does not come on or flickers, then its the 'switch?'

Myk,

My symptoms last nite witht he new HVAC controls were.

Fan speed 1 - AC light on no fan/blower
Fan Speed 2,3,4 - No AC light but fan/blower worked

I swapped this

Now

Yes. It's a resistance thing. You can clean out the switch (it may look burnt), and the connector. Regrease, then give it a try.

or just buy a new switch, and clean out the connectors

The AC and fans work on 1-3 on mine, but nothing no AC or fan on 4. Any thoughts on if it is the resistor or the switch?

read this

http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123745623-How-to-Identifying-2001-2003-HVAC-switch-unit-revision

go find a junkyard car made after dec 2, 2002 and grab the unit. and here are the part numbers that will be listed on the side of the unit if you go to a yard where you can't pull your own.

(DX N LX Green backlit gauges) BL8F-61-190 D
(ES/P5 Amber backlit gauges) BL8W-61-190 F

the last letter is the most important, it is the revision code and the rest of the part number stays the same. also note the 4th letter since it tells you you lighting colour (if that matters to you)

if the last letter is not one of them listed above, its an older part and you will still have problems.
