that list took a while to read! very impressive car. i'd love to see it in person. if it were mine i'd go spoilerless and different (stock) tails. thats about all though. very slick.

Ya everyone pretty much hates the wing. lol
As for the tails, I'm tryin to get my hands on some NightShades tint. I nvr disliked them untill ass off late. I don't like the red. IF they were like the picture of the ones I ordered that would have been great. But of course they weren't, so I will just tint them.....

Also I still have a little hesitation problem that I have traced back to my Flyin Miata o2 voltage clamp. They redesigned it, cause I guess this is a common thing for these to malfunction after a bit.
So I ordered another one.

It looks fast, and it is fast! I like the wing, if you took it off it would look so weird.

Updated. The OT-1 is installed and working great. The only thing is that you can't log more then 4 protcals on it. ISO 9141 is the circuitry that is used in our cars, which happens to be the slowest of ALL the OBD2 software. Other types ( SAE J1850, etc) can log all 16 channels and not slow down.
I will be only logging 3 after I find out if my o2 voltage clamp is working properly.
Timing BTDC
MAF
Speed.
This will bring my log speed up to about 3 times a second, instead of 1 with 4 channels used.
Also on another note, I have had this anoying tick/rattle coming from the engine for sometime now. I knew it was nothing mechanical, just most likley a hose or something vibrateing off of something. Come to find out that it is my fuel line after my soleniod on my n2o set up.
nice:rolleyes:
I am quite surpised that I did not notice it as a vaccum leak, as it is open to the manifold nozzles.
Other then that, shes running great. I still need to up the boost tho.
This winter I am going to be re-fitting the front bumper so it doesn't ''sag'' as much and maybe start building a spare tranny.

Your scanner doesn't have a fast refresh mode? I've had great luck with using this setting on my BR-3 OBD-III scanner with the ISO 9141 system in my Protege.
kz9
November 3rd, 2008, 09:15 PM
No fast refresh. I have heard that newer OBD-3 software has a upscaler. This one is only OBD-2.

This car is a masterpiece. And sorry, but I like the wing. Given the magnitude of work done, the wing fits. My biggest issue with this car is that it doesn't have enough gauges.

they all functional and if my car was built like kz9 ride i would have all the gauges he's got to make sure everything works how it's supposed to and notice any changes( maybe some of them hidden though ). this ain't no 5k car and proper maintenance is a must, also they can prevent from going zoom-zoom-boom just my .02 cents

Well the cars going to be going up on jack stands tomorrow for the winter. I might but it back down for X-mas, but that depends on weather and salt conditions.
Going to be doing brake service, oils changed, full detail inside and out, Install the Gt Spec V-brace, re fit and paint front bumper, make heat sheild for turbo, clean up engine bay hoses, repair flaked off sections of underbody rock-guard,
Things I might buy.....
Falken RT-615
BBK (require 10mm spacers or new rims)
Turbo bellmouth
Rollcage
BC Racing damper adjuster extenders
Adjustable Latteral Links
Come spring It will be going to the body shop to get some dings and dents cleaned up.

based on a 105 trap time, you have a very hi 12/low 13 in that thing for sure.
was your clutch slipping?
60' coulda been better, that is prolly where your addn'l second will come from.
cruisinblackp5
December 3rd, 2008, 09:14 AM
cut a .5 off your 60 and you can grab a good second in teh 1/4 for sure. That car is awesome.
kiwee
December 3rd, 2008, 09:26 AM
^^^^^ that theory has been disproved a few times this season.
'every half in the 60' saves 1 second in the full track'
got the slips to prove it.

We allk know about manuals in the 1/4 as well, so many variables. I find it interesting, from personal experience I have found it to be very close, not exactly spot on but what is with a 5 spd, send me the slips if ya got em, I wouldnt mind looking em over.
BTW Ive shaved .3 or .4 off and resulted in the same time or slower, just lots of factors, in general look at a group of similar slips though

I don't think the clutch was slipping. I think it a combination of high end power loss because of my lack of performance tuning, and the fact that it was my first time on the track with the turbo and only my second time total going to a dragstrip.
I NEED to get some roller time this spring (i have been saying this for a while:p ) I can tune it myself on the street, but 4th gear pulls are kinda stupid. 3rd gear pulls go though the band too quickly, so its hard to smooth out the powerband.
I feel confident that with some more practice and tuning that I will easily do low 12's, maybe even a high 11 with max boost and the DEI cryo on. Also can most likley get a DNF if I hit the jucie :D
kiwee
December 3rd, 2008, 03:17 PM

if you want that kind of time, i think you'll need to get some slicks. hehehehe

Those runs where at only 10psi, not even close to what the car has in her. I have always thought that my GT2871r was only good for 25psi, but doing a little research and ask questions I have been told that it should be good for 30psi on my setup.
drunkmunky
December 4th, 2008, 12:57 AM
The disco potato maxes out at 30psi, you are correct. Not many people push it to that extent because you really start hurting the bearings.

How does it max at a set psi?

How does it max at a set psi?
It doesn't, I could close the WG and boost what ever it can. I'm talking about compessor effienecy. 30psi is about 75%. Garrett does consider this over-spinning.
cruisinblackp5
December 4th, 2008, 03:00 PM
Sorry I understand about efficiency, is it based off a certain 2L stock head design ? I dunno im just confused. Pressure is based on a restriction and if you alleviate the restriction, pressure will drop but you still push the same air
kz9
December 4th, 2008, 04:27 PM
All is was told was that a turbo that pushes 600 cfm should be able to produce 30psi on a 2.0l engine. I have no clue if thats based off of a stock, built, inline or boxer. I'm sure there is a formula that this can be figured out with, but I have no clue. Things like turbo rpm, engine rpm, displacement, flow restriction, etc.
My old turbo put out 330 cfm and it pushed 18psi before it choked. Doesn't prove anything tho.

Ordered a set of NRG Cf hood dampers and looking into a set of APR Cf canards and getting them to make me a custom Cf splitter.
Unless Joe can help me out with somemore Cf work agian?
Im thinking to that a set of Cf F1 style mirrors also might look good. What do you guys think?

00bluees

mirrors look good. although they look better on cars where you can mount them to the top edge of the door or fender, instead of the triangle piece on the pro. but either way i think it would suit your ride.
kz9
January 2nd, 2009, 08:51 PM
^ I want to see some fitment and high res pics before I buy these tho. These are no Ebay, so you know what I mean. I just can't seem to find a reputable company that makes a bolt-on kit.
The black cover is ABS, so if it doesn't have a UV coat, they will fade to grey. That can easily be fixed with a trip to Joe.
Shasta
January 2nd, 2009, 09:03 PM
I think those mirrors are ugly, might work on say a miata or something along those lines but not a protege, proportionally not right but its what you like that counts,
CulRidr
January 2nd, 2009, 09:08 PM
I'd also say no to the mirrors, and no to the canards (they look completely out of place with the lines of the car. As for the splitter, some are tasteful, and some are very nice looking.
kz9
January 2nd, 2009, 09:20 PM
I think its the fact that they would just be too small looking. Thats whay I want to see some pics of them installed before I make up my mind.
As for the canards, I think it wouldn't look bad at all. I already have vertical canards and if I line it up along the line on the bumper (second from bottom on my sig) it would fit. The ones I'm looking at don't stick out farther then the body kit.

i have the APR GT Mirrors in my garage.. bought the universal ones and am going to mount them in cf sheets i think.. unless i mount them in the doors.
i also am installing the APR GTC-200 wing come spring
Pirana had those exact TCS mirrors.. said they were ok but nothing compared to the APR.. as the price indicates
as for the canards.. go for it!! i love them.. as long as you buy APR haha ill be getting little ones soon and a full splitter that goes right back to the front axle.. already have it all designed. am gonna ask joe to make it when i have the prototype made in fg..
heres what the TCS will look like

I think if they were just a bit larger it would actually be a pretty nice replacement, even at that size I have to admit it looks better than I thought when the car is totally decked, which yours is. I thought the mirror stem would look funny but I was wrong, guess some things just have to be installed to really be appreciated, I can't stop looking at that yellow MSP, beautiful.

The splitter is gonna be a one off thing for me I think. I can't seem to find one that will match the bumper to well. I think I found a set of APR canards in BC for a good price. As for the mirrors, I found them on Ebay, so I am asking the guy if they are real TCS mirrors. Can't seem to find an actual TCS page anywhere. So if I go TCS, I'm just gonna ship the cover to Joe for wrapping.
A rear diffuser would be nice too.....;)

Ok so the TCS mirrors, APR type A, and splitter supports are on order and I have made a mock-up splitter out of plywood. The finish product will most likely be plastic with a CF reinforcement multiple layer wrapping. I think this would help keep things together if I bump something.
Here are some pics. Remember this is just rough, and took about 2 hours.

That just has some 2x4's screwed to it so give it the right hieght. Nothing bolted yet. I will be able to get 10 bolts along the bumper, and a couple on the trannsmisson under-brace. Along with the splitter support rods, it isn't going anywhere i think.

functional splitters are normally long.
they go for about 18"-24" from what i have seen.
kaz, i am assuming you don't care about removing this thing? any problems with getting @ your oil filter?
i was going to suggest using popper clips. i use them on my front lip for my sti. works well as i don't have to worry about the bumper getting screw tired or tearing it. just an idea..............

^ I want to do some splitter development for the race car, but for a car that will be hitting 200km/h, it hadn't better be attached via the bumper. The bumper rebar, sub frame, tranny support member all sound like good attachment points.
We'll probably also go the plywood route because it's relatively cheap and easy to replace if required... i think most effective splitters go back to about the line of the axles, which on the Pro would not interfear much with draining oil or the filter, since it's on the back side of the block...

Its about 32'' overall in depth. I will be using APR 10mm splitter supports and SS bolts with large fender washers. This thing wont be going anywhere. As for the oil filter, even with being relocated I can still access with ease. There will be a slot for the tranny cooler that needs air, and also my AWR pan, exhaust, and some IC piping seem to stick lower than the splitter. I haven't figured out how to fit this, but also maybe after I remove the stock under shroud, it might not be an issue.

Mines going to be CF, I just mocked one out of plywood. But I see your point for sure about cost in your case. But also facter in the wieght, it might be a mear 2-5 pounds, but at high speed, plywood might fail??? i don't know, do other teams do them out of plywood?

i dont have any of the protective plastic on my car anymore.. just because i was always working underneath so it became a bitch to take off/put back on
im making brackets for mine to attach to the transmission, block (where the j pipe connected to on the msps) inside of wheel wells and front frame below rad.. i will probably also do the same with the bumper reinforcements just to keep the stress off the front of the splitter.
mine is designed to go back to the axle pretty much.. mine will be fully functional and will have an access flap to the underside of the engine
my core is made out of a thin 1/8" finish veneer. i havent decided of i was going to use that or not. i might just use that as the template and then make it 100% fg (10-12 layers) and get wrapped in cf

I think other teams use plywood, sometimes reinforcef with some aluminium ribbing perhaps. The weight to cost ratio certainly will skew to the plywood especially if you get pushed in to a car in front of you or take on some curbing that doesn't agree... I've seen several cars in the pits wiht hanging splitters from the warfare.

Well after talking to a couple race teams, and fabricators, I have the final design for the splitter. I am going to have to find a 3mm sheet of Nomex honeycomb. This stuff is so ridged that they say that a 180lb man can stand in the middle of a 4' x 8' of 3mm with support at each cornor and have only 1'' of defection. This is the stuff that Nascar uses on there splitters.
So now I have to find a supplier. Also if there is anyone else interested on making a functional, maybe we can get a better price if i buy multiple sheets.

Ok well ran into a little glitch with the honeycomb core. This stuff has to be laminated (fiberglass layers) using vaccum bag process. Well since I don't have one of those in my garage, I might be just going with a fiberglass core. It gonna flex a bit more at higher speed, but with somemore anchor points I should be able to get rid of that.
I really doubt that the 2'' of splitter that sticks out of the bumper is going to flex that much.

Just arrived today!!!! The willwoods need some TLC to bring back the shine and the rotors are going to be cleaned and painted where the rust forms cause the pad don't touch.
As for the rears........
These are going to be tricky. I am going to need to fab up someway to connect to the stock e-brake system. Not too hard. They are 90 deg from stock. That means that instead of pulling ''down'' the length of the car like stock, these pull accross the car. Im thinking Im just going to need to make new cables from the equalizer, and then bend some teflon lined tubing to make the 90 deg turn at the caliper, and then make a mounting tab on the linkage to fit what kind of cable end i decide to use.
I will also be painting them to match the front.

Ok well the car needs new rubbers so I went with Falken RT-615 in 215/45/17. I hear great reviews for these tires and the price tag of $800 including alignment isin't too bad ethier.
Also I have most likely scraped the idea of trying to make the cable E-brake work for my rear BBK and decided I am going to go with a hydraulic system. My plan is to use the stock Ebrake handle and make a custom linkage that is going to attach to a Wilwood compact single chamber Master Brake Cylinder. From there I will run a line to a tee and then equal length lines to the calipers and use a double stack banjo/bolt setup.
Yes I know that this in not legal, and if I have a hydraulic failure I am shit out of luck.

Ok well today I worked a bit on the car. I decided to install the hanger rods for the splitter and while I had the bumper off I went ahead and tried to refit the bumper.
Turned out well, but I have to tweak one part a bit......

Not quite; my guess is that the "minor tweaking" refers to the bumper next to the driver side headlight which is presently out of alignment.
Looking forward to seeing this car at MOM :)

I have my splitter hanging about 3/4" from the bumper like what yours seems to do. I'd like to revise it so that it meets flush with the bumper and actually splits the air on top, and below the car. What are your thoughts as to how it is setup right now?
nvm. you are making it flush.
Where did you purchase the alumilite?
kz9
August 8th, 2009, 08:09 PM
^alumilite? I take it you are refering to my core. Its actually Dupoint Nomex Honeycomb. It the thing of the future I guess. Nascar Uses it on their splitter and spoilers. I got Joe to vac-process a layer of FG on each side then I started to mold it to the bumper.
kz9
August 8th, 2009, 08:24 PM
Some more progress on the splitter. I install some nice and wide SS Fender washers where the support rods go to give it more strength and then I put a heavy stran layer of FG on the bottom covering them and adding a little more thickness to it. After that I put on a layer of long hair Bondo Filler and sanded that smooth. I still have to go over it with normal filler to fill the little divits and such.
Then Fliped it over to start on the top. I shaved down the top of the molding lips and added some more FG mat in the places I think more strength would be needed.
Still much more to do like figure out what I am going to do with the middle. I don't know if I will just leave it open so I can get air flow to my tranny cooler or totally mold it up to the bumper. I like the look of another opening. Its not too big tho. Also I have to figure out how I am going to finish the edges. I think I might just cut some small rubber hose down the middle and secure it around the edge. Or I might just roll over some FG and then wrap it in CF. But I think that the egde might start to crack over time and the rubber will help hide that......

kz9
August 22nd, 2009, 11:36 PM
No dyno yet. I ran a 14.1 at the track when I first got the car back on the road. Bad tune and only 10psi on bald tires, so I wasn't expecting too much. I run 12 psi now with a decent tune, only I have to adjust the Voltage Clamp so I don't get hesitation when I got into boost. I thought I got last time I messed around with it, but seems better, now I'm going rich instead of lean.
The only dyno in Windsor already has claimed one of my engines......

What kind of a shot of the juice are you running? Do you have it on a WOT or switch After WOT?
kz9
August 23rd, 2009, 08:14 AM
I have the 100shot jets in and its a direct port wet. I have a controller so I am going to set it up for nothing on 1st and most likely 2nd, have it hit on 3rd and 4th. This should help eliminate the mad wheel spin that will come with the shot.
But again, I always can just up the boost and max the power that the tranny will hold, and just use the shot as an aid in getting the boost past 20psi quicker. That was the whole point behind the N2o.
Have not ran the jucie yet, but I will.
Shasta
August 23rd, 2009, 05:51 PM
But do you have any idea what a setup like yours would do on a good tune, with no juice of course and not killing it with crazy boost. More curious what it would be compared to a stock MSP. Approximation is all I'm really wondering. Say a streetable daily driver @ 10-12 lbs. maybe 250hp or am I way off.

Cool, good to know, Im looking at doing a direct port as well, just curious as to controllers etc and to how you managed to deal with the spin. I'll probably work mine out over the winter but Im just in the intial research of various DP shots and how everyone finds dealing with different jetting at different cylinders and if say 1 differs greatly from 4 & of jetting is small enough to change for varinances to get even distribution. Let me know when you get around to tuning the N20
kz9
August 24th, 2009, 02:20 PM
Theres a series of jets at the nozzles and at the distribution blocks. I looked into each of the big 3's systems and found that more of the Big Block guys liked the ZEX cause of the equal balance between cylinders.

I honestly didn't think it would be at the 300 mark, I kinda of thought around 280 max so thats a pretty decent number and I wasn't thinking WHP. A hell of a lot of money to get there but cool. Helps to have that torque too, nice thing about the Mazda.

Well today since its nice I decided to kill the rear fender rust.
Its worse then I first thought. It got in there and started to peel backt he seam and it was everywhere.
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/kzim9/IMG_3220.jpg
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/kzim9/IMG_3222.jpg
Got out the air angle die grinder with some medium 3M pads for the outside and used a SS wire brush and 3M oxide grit cloth to get to the inside off the seam. After that treated the whole area to some degreaser and Acetone.
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/kzim9/IMG_3223.jpg
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/kzim9/IMG_3224.jpg
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/kzim9/IMG_3226.jpg
Then I treated the area to a couple coats by brush of Rust Killer grey sandable primer.
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/kzim9/IMG_3228.jpg
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh66/kzim9/IMG_3229.jpg
I cleaned both rear fenders and did a couple coats along the seam. I will be rolling the rear fenders like I did the fronts. So like the fronts I coated the seam with Rust Killer and rolled it, and then coated the whole underside of the fender again. After I get the rear done and rolled I will then apply a coat of Rubberized guard to the whole fender and also start to do the underside of the car.

^does that primer prevent the rust from ever come back in that location? Sounds like something I'll be doing next year after my first attempt failed from not doing the inside of the seem.

It says it has rust inhibitor in it. I've used this stuff to paint rusty pipe at work before and 2 years later no rust still.
kz9
November 8th, 2009, 10:09 AM
Ok after rolling the fenders most of the paint applied yesterday that came in contact with the roller came off. So this time I am getting out my airbursh and painting in nice light coats so its not as heavy when drying. Also adding a little heat gun helps cure the light coats faster. Plus rolling the fender opened the seam up all around so I had to clean the seam again and the airbursh helps get the paint in there deeper.
Should have waited longer for it to cure like I did the front, but I have cars coming into the shop today. Oh well, at least now I can put the tires on and get it off the hoist.....

i would hate to get rear ended because someone couldnt see you brake.
