I just wanted to know if the P5 front bumper and the side skirts will fit onto a 2002 Protege ES? If it does, what else will I need for the front bumper conversion other than the front bumper itself? I heard you need something like a 5mph bumper...is this true, what is it and do I really need it? Thanks for helping out.

By law all cars have to have 5mph bumpers. Your car already has one. I think there is another thread on swiching bumpers. I dont know where it is though. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

But will I need a different 5mph bumper to do the conversion? And what else will I need to do the conversion? Also will the side skirts fit perfectly?

Iheard that the bumper on the ES is different from the P5, something about the 'rebar', not really to sure what this is, i thought rebar was a steel reinforcement used in concrete construction. So not to sure why it is on a car. But that's just what i heard. Id check with raymond first and see what he says.
Other than that, you'd need all the fog lights, etc.

You will need a few things, top and bottom grills, the lights and mounting kits and wiring, wheel wells and bumper bar /rebar.

why don't you just buy the mp3 bumper instead? i think i read somewhere that you can do just that especially if it's the ES sedan...

is the re-bar thing the same as the 5mph bumper? Do I really need a new one if I do this conversion, coz I heard the ES 5mph bumper is different from the P5 5mph bumper??

Protege_ES you would probley be better off getting the West Wing front end......it's the same as the P5 but better, and it will fit on your car. I think it's cheaper than buying a OEM P5 bumper

One might find the MP3 bumper a little difficult to locate as Mazda probably doesn't produce as mant of them being that it is a limited edition car and all. Whether you get a MP3, P5 or the WW bumper you still need the things I listed above.

what is the rebar thing?

the rebar is just a bar the hold the foam or in some cases the plastic bumper cover to the car. the rebar is the bumper like on old cars. The plastic is just to make it NICE looking. after looking at the workshop manual it looks like the under peices are the same. you'll need a complete front bumper (grills fog lights ect) should work though

You will definitely want to go for the MPS kit from Wings West. It's the same front end, but with some front lip spoilers etc. makes the whole whole package look TITE!

Do a search on the kit within the message board. You're bound to find some pics.

So is the re-bar thing and the 5mph bumper the same thing?

Also, what else do I need EXACTLY for this conversion. Other than the re-bar, 5mph bumper (i still don't know if they are the same), fog lights, top and bottom grills, and wheel wells (which I don't know what they are?)

tis the plastic that goes in the wheel wells. kinda seperates the engine from the wheels, with flimsy plastic.

So let me get this straight...

If I go with the P5/MP3 kit, I will need:
- re-bar
- wheel wells
- fog lights
- top and bottom grills

But If I go with the WW kit, I will only need:
- re-bar
- fog lights
- top grill only

Is this right? Please someone I need some reasurrance before I go out and do this and correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!

Also, is the wheel wells and splash mud guards the same thing?

a 5mph bumper is already there. call raymond and ask him what you need

Just an aside, if you get someones front bumper from a p5. more than likely it will come with the bottom grill, i can't really seeing it not coming with it. But hey if its from Mazda Canada im sure they will try to charge you for it anyway.

The MPS kit is unfortunately not an option for you. I spoke with Justin who is the Sales Mgr. at Wings West because I was going to add the MPS kit to my car a couple of weeks ago and he confirmed that the MPS kit will NOT fit the 2002 ES sedan.  The problem as he explained it is that the front bumper cover will not fit properly - the kit was designed with the MP3/P5 in mind.  I am skeptical though - I think with some mods to your fog lights it should fit.  Let me know if you decide to go this route - I've been trying to find someone who has used the kit on a 2002 sedan with no luck yet.  It's a bit too expensive for me to buy and then find out that this guy was right and it won't fit.

phone to spolilers, they just did a sedan last week. It is true the front bumper needs a diferent rebar - but i think that it can be modified to fit!

Wheel well- The plastic pieces that cover the wheel compartment to protect engine bay from water, debris, etc.

Mud/Splash guards- The small piece of plastic that attaches behind the tire on to the wheel well to help protect the outside of the car from water/mud splashing from the tires.
