I had a link to a turbo kit, thru the protegetech.com board, but forget some details except that in our dollars, it would be $6,000, not including installation. ($3,800USD)
I'm interested in a kit, but not willing to sell my soul for one.
What about the cam kit I've heard about? In a ZX3, such an upgrade boosted hp from 130 to 165 but took some low end and midrange in the process. I'm not willing to sacrifice the "every day drivability" for all top end. With an auto, I'm not going to benefit from that.
Does anyone have the cam kit for the P5 and willing to share? But back to the turbo...would be nice if we found one and got a group buy on it.
thanks, markque http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

markque, you're probably talking about the Tri-Point turbo kit. however, if you read the protege boards stemming from the USA, many say that the tri-point system is a weak system because of the Aerodyne turbocharger that they use. they say the rest of the kit is good, and the fitment is good, but reliability issues with the Aerodyne is the major concern. if somehow you can get the same size turbo, but using a Garrett T03 turbo, then maybe reliability issues can be lowered. but then again with turbo a N/A car, reliability issues will always remain.

The boys south of the border seem to be happy with Bell Engineering's turbo kit, not sure of the link but its on the same board somewhere.

Wasn't there a thread entitled "Turbo Trek" ??
Something about someone knowing a guy in massachusetts ( a brother or friend of a friend) that would do a conversion for xxxx$$$ and someone was trying to get a bunch of people in on it??

It's Corky Bell and he has made a lot of turbos for the Miatas. He is responsible for the Flying Miata turbos and author of Maximum Boost. He already has the kit made for the 2.0

Guys/gals don't forget you can't just "bolt" a turbo on and expect it to be ok. It might work for a while but....
You need to tune it properly.
You may need a stand alone engine management.
Depending on boost levels you may want to upgrade some engine/drivetrain components.
All the people I know that just bolted turbo's/superchargers on thier car and drove off don't have a car with a working engine anymore.
Just something to think about.
Do it right, the first time.

Check out this thread on the mazdamp3 board - Very good info on after-market parts. (They also have a section on board dedicated to turbos.)

Listen to the man! Adding any booster (turbo or supercharger) is not for your average backyard mechanic! I've tackled a Roots Blower system, and had a machinist, millright and engineer helping me, and we still managed to ruin engines trying to get the most out of the kit. Admittedly, that's twenty years ago and the kits are better, but the principle remains the same... the more strain you put on the engine, the faster you find out what the weakest link looks like on the floor of your garage (or the hole in your hood). http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/baaa.gif

I am the "turbo trek" guy.....I have a contact in Mass but he has become a bit of a fruit loop... a lot of big talk but when I drove down to get everthing installed he didn't have the custom header yet so i couldn't do anything. Since then I have lost my trust in him so I cut him off!
No trust= no turbo
I am not going to let some idiot slap a turbo on my car and then I blow my engine on the way home!

hey guys... haven't been on here in ages... too much drama in my life... lol... anyways... I spoke to the mechanic that got the contract for the mazdaspeed protege's (he did the intercooler prototype for mazda earlier on this year i believe), and I spoke to him about Turbo Kits for the P5... he said the total kit would cost $9000, so then obviously i didn't ask any more questions after i got that price, so not many details about the kit, but if anyone wants that number, you can email me... He's located in Brampton...
