So some of you may have seen that i was looking for a spare intake mani. Well i ended up getting one and still working on getting the VICS Fixxed. I got a repair kit, however i had to go get it exchanged was missing 3 screws (didnt see there was a hole in the bag). So while i am waiting for my next repair kit to get in. I started on the next step which was the porting. I have had very little experience of porting before (i am talking like 10 minutes w/ a diegrinder before but man oh man did i ever FUBAR that piece of aluminum up and that was 2 years ago). So i decided to try my hand it it again. All i can say is its pretty easy as long as you take your time and think it through. I did clean the mani as much as i can before porting. I plan on cleaning it again after i am done w/ a hot tank or acid dip.
So heres some pics. Starting with how the runner looked before porting and how its coming along. I have only done 1 runner so far and even that is not finished.
Essentially the pics go how the port looked before, then the inital porting or a bit of it, then how much metal i took out in the 1 and a half hour span, then how it looks so far and how i did a BIT of cleaning and how it looks.
This is by no means done! however you can see how much difference there is already. Additionally you can just BARELY see the VTCS line (where the mani has a bit of a lip) in the last 2 pics. I plan to have those FULLY ported out by the time i am done with it!

I know nothing of what you speak of. What I can say is that pic #4 looks a hell of a lot better then pic #1 - so I guess that means a Job well done Sir! :p

Have you compared it to the opposite inlet? Arent you going to be kinda making a step? I dont know specs on the opposing ports. Dont forget to match your gaskets though. Looking good

Yeah i am gonna gasket match. I am not too worried about the opposite inlet, since i have thermal spacers i am thinking to SLIGHTLY port those so it tapers to the inlets so i think i should be covered that way. Oh we'll if anything atleast the manifold will be clean, and bit more smooth for the air to pass thru.

you should fill the holes inside that runner before porting it that way you can make it all nice and smooth

This is exactly what I did to mine when I did my VICS screws (loosening issue) and VTCS removal. I portmatched it to my throttle body overbore.
I also have the Outlaw thermal spacer to fully compliment the upgrade. Looks good, great job!

make sure you leave the surface relatively ruff when you are finished. it helps improve fuel atomization, especially in the winter.

newb question
will porting and polishing have any gains for some one n/a or is this something that will only get gains when boosted?

Its up in the air, some say it will give some sorta gain, some say it wont. Depends. I personally think there will be a gain, removing the extra set of butterfiles is good, as well as smoothening that edge where those plates were as well as making them a TAD bit bitter, maybe not as big as some of the Turbo guys, but bigger then stock should help IMO. Atleast if anything you'll gain some "under the curve" power rather then actual peak hp.
ON aside note:
I did do some more today, filled in the holes, did some more porting and now gonna just sand it a bit, not make it like mirror smooth, but relatively smooth but it should still have some roughness in it. :D Hopefully i'll have her all done soon.
BTW Does anyone konw of the MSP mani and the P5/Sedan are the same (with the exception of the VICS butterflies and the way they are attached). Also does anyone know if i can swap those butterflies (the ones in the MSP) into this P5/Sedan intake mani and be ok?

I'm not quite sure, but don't the MSP manifolds have more vacuum ports?
Shouldn't be a problem as long as you have a vac block though.

What did you use to fill those holes in?

not that I'm aware of (I've been wrong plenty though)

The only extra one I can think of is the source for the WGA/BPV on the MSP. I doubt there's a need for the N/A Proteges.:p

Used some QuickSteel to fill in the holes.
As for the mani difference between the P5 and MSP i think they are the same, i'll double check the Vac line stuff later tonight. I also have a vac distribution block so i am ok.

Don't go any bigger on those ports.
If you can spend some time lining the gasket between the upper and lower up and port match the upper to the lower as mine was really bad. The gasket it easy to line up just bolt the upper and lower up with the gasket installed, and then put a few white out paint marks on the upper, lower and gasket so you know where to put the gasket when port matching either the upper or lower.

No to probably both, I'd guess.

well if its no to the gain, i ask for proof rather then just speculation since i havent seen any concrete proof, however i DO intend on maybe atleast doing some dynos. Asked a family friend whos' a fluid engineer to see how he would go about figuring all this out, i am sure he'll comeup with something or a way to findout.
if it no to swapping the butterflies thats fine, i figured i had a 50/50 shot of being able to have them work on a different mani (albeit they look the same, the part numbers are different so i figured theres a change somewhere that make them different)
