Back in your rallying days, you seemed to have learned more than a few tricks. Did you ever try something called Indexing your sparkplugs?? What it is, incase you did do it but called it something different is, setting the sparkplugs so they are all oriented the same way in the combustion chamber. for example, the open part of the gap is facing towards the intake valve, or whatever. I have this book that focuses on performance for the Ford Mustang, and there are a few paragraphs in there that mention this. The guy that wrote the book claimed something like 7hp, mind you he had access to a dyno to test this theory out, and I know that dyno's are not 100% accurate, and this might not work for every car, but have you ever tried this, or heard of anyone trying this with success??

Indexing was an idea that had a "holy Grail" feel to it. In theory, one might think that having everything set exactly right would work, but if everything down the line wasn't correct (ie. you didn't spend the bucks on a balanced and blueprinted engine) you get stopped at the first baffle, usually a lip around either the intake or exhaust manifold.

There used to be stuff called "104 Octane +" which was popular. It showed real engine improvements on the dyno... (I burned the valve seats on a rally motor convinced this crap was beneficial) except on the dyno they had used a specially ported and polished head and manifold.

Real improvement comes from two areas, induction and exhaust. Burn rate (as with spark plugs) is notoriously poor, that's why raw gas still passes through your exhaust system. An optimum burn off the top of your pistons is so delicate as to demand a calibration that even the best systems have trouble meeting. Too rich and you begin to foul the system, too lean and you burn the pistons.
