View Full Version : yellowmsp03.5's Engine/New Turbo Build :)

So here's a couple pics to hold some people off for a bit...
here's the new engine:
JE 8.5:1CR standard bore
Pauter Rods
Clevitte Bearings
ARP Hardware
Blueprinted, Balanced Everything
Stage 2 PnP Head
5 Angle Valve Job w/ 1mm Oversized valves
no cams yet
The Turbo Build:
MAM New Sleeper Manifold
Mam Sleeper Downpipe
Garrett GT35R 0.63A/R
the manifold is going to be modified thats why there is no flange on it in the pics.. i dont know where the turbo will need to be mounted yet so i will place that where i want it and then weld the flange on according to the turbo clearance (if needs to be angled, moved forward/back etc) the manifold will also have an external wastegate flange welded into the front of the collector
the downpipe is cut apart aswell. i am cutting it off and welding on my flex and cutout from my old downpipe. the flange is cut off the top of the downpipe becuase im converting it to a V-band for a lot easier/cleaner installs
and as if building a new engine AND new turbo kit wasn't enough.. i decided to cut apart my front buddyclub bumper aswell. i decided to cut it to open up the front opening and expose about 25% more of my FMIC. i also cutout the foglight spots and fiberglassed over the holes. in doing this, i have given the bumper a whole new look and something more of my own style.
will take more pics this week when most of the remaining parts come in

yellowmsp03.5
May 11th, 2008, 06:19 PM
yes those were taken this afternoon.. not too much progress as im waiting for parts to move forward (headgasket, clutch and flywheel to finish engine & flanges, and turbo to be able to weld the turbo kit together)
then all i really need to do is drop engine in, bolt on turbo kit (after coming back from ceramic coating, install AEM EMS, Nology Hotwires, plugs, install rear mount and tranny mount, relocate battery to the rear and finish up the full wire tuck :)
that list seemed soo much shorter in my head

May 12th, 2008, 05:09 PM
ya.. i found out that last year with the first turbo build..
this one is more a matter of money then anything else.. its freaking stressful haha.. takes a lot of planning and hard work to get this done the best way and make it happen
and for the tranny im not doing too much this summer.. i will be ripping the tranny out again next winter and completely redoing it with a full PAR gearset/bearings etc.. i will also be going with the quaife lsd next year..
this year im just welding my stock lsd and putting in the GTX 3rd and 5th for now.. i know they arent too much stronger but im only gonna run around 300whp this summer until the trannys built next year.. then ill go to break 400 which is what i was always aiming for
but i cant do it all this year.. i wanna drive my car sometime and the tranny work i want is another 6 grand or so.. so its gonna have to wait.

what you really need, is a fred flinstone car.. who care about trannies and turbos.... just eat some beans and have some good shoes and peddle away!

so i got my TiAL 50mm BOV and TiAL 46mm external wastegate in the mail today.. this is how pretty they look.
they are all V-band fittings and i got the weld on flanges to weld into my cold pipe and manifold collector

just need to weld on the flanges and hopefully send the mani,dp, valve cover and turbo away for a jethot coating to look all chromed and keep the heat down under the hood
its coming along

just ordered some more parts right now
Spec Stage 3+ Clutch (capable of 475ft/lbs)
Spec Aluminum Flywheel
AWR Tranny Mount (95duro)
Prosport Oil Sandwich Plate
also somewhere in the mail is my
Cometic HG
Samco Rad Hoses
Billet Aluminum Straight Thermostat Housing
NGK V-Power Spark Plugs ZFR7F (on sale and free shipping so why not haha)
and last but not least my
AEM EMS
the only thing i still need to order is the GT35R. and i can't do all that much without it since i need to to figure our fitment for all my welding (flanges, mani, dp, wastegate) and then i still need to send it out for ceramic coating

^ Sweet! What's the trim on the compressor housing?
yellowmsp03.5
May 21st, 2008, 03:27 PM
its 56 trim compressor side and 82 turbine trim
i picked the 0.63 A/R out of 0.63, 0.82 or 1.06 becuase it is the quickest to spool.. it just doesnt have as much power up top.. but its a ***king GT35R so i think it will do me enough.. haha

wow scott, that thing is massive. any idea how much boost you'll be running?
yellowmsp03.5
May 23rd, 2008, 03:35 PM
not sure on the boost.. i bought my wastegate with an 11psi spring in it so it will be at that as the lowest... im gonna tune it to about 300whp for now.. then when i rebuild the tranny in the future ill see what this turbo can do..
id like to run 16psi daily and 25psi track when im done. my goal is to break 30psi but i doubt it on this turbo

ya... the hard part about this turbo is fitting it between the block and the rad... i have about 1/4-1/2" max of room on each side of the compressor housing
kinda tight

I had the same problem with mine as well. I had to fool around with the compressor housing and clock it so it just barely fit. It now sits about 1/16" away from the clutch bleeding screw, which is the best I could do or it wouldn't fit at all.
snafu
May 24th, 2008, 10:48 PM
Whhoooah, haha:) Crazy stuff man, it's amazing how many smaller pieces you need for a big build like this.
yellowmsp03.5
June 2nd, 2008, 08:22 PM
so i knew the turbo would be a close fit but its a little bigger than i thought... i have 1 1/2" from the compressor housing to the a/c condensor (with rad out obvi.) so my AWR rad will not fit (thicker than stock)
so this led me to a problem.
my solution is cutting all the tabs and coolant return outlet off and sliding it in front of the a/c condensor behind the bumper. to do this i had to remove the hood latch (wanted hood pins anyways) bend the a/c lines out of the way (tuck inside the frame now) and remove the vertical rad support.
ill be relocating the coolant return outlet elsewhere on the bottom tank and will be fabbing up two new vertical rad supports to place inside the frame (between rad and condensor)
by doing all this it gives me A LOT more room to play with in the front of the engine bay and makes my life easier after this work is done...
i just figured out what needed to be done tonight and made some sketches and plans.. will start cutting and welding tomorrow..
hoping to post some pics tomorrow night of the rad relocated and the flanges tacked on the mani and dp :)

It may be a PITA to do all of that work, but you cant complain with a bigger turbo, can you? :)
yellowmsp03.5
June 2nd, 2008, 10:32 PM
i dont really look at it as a pain in the ass.. it will make EVERYTHING easier after this is done.. and will make the engine bay look even cleaner with my wire tuck:) haha
and i like doing custom fab work so it kinda made me happy haha.. fabbing doesnt bother me.. its buying more shit i didnt want to buy that bothers me..
kinda like new custom rad hoses haha :(

because the a/c isnt all that important to me.. i just wanna get the car running and drive it.. more important things than the a/c
and i really dont want to get involved in rerouting the a/c lines.. that is dirty work
and i dont like getting dirty haha
haha a farmside member who hasnt gotten dirty . bs
when should it be all buttoned up?

the last of them pretty much, other than a few odds and ends

so the only thing left is the hard part haha

btw the clutch is a Stage 3+ with 475lb/tq rating.. full face for streetability :)
i pulled the car up from my barn where it sat all winter... the driveway was a little muddy at the bottom.. haha
now its up beside my garage so its easier to test fit the new parts.
how i got it up the steep hill:) thank god for owning a big strong truck also :)

engine bay.. everything is disconnected pretty much.. other than the axles and engine mounts.. im keeping this engine in the for fitment of the new parts in the car. it is a lot easier to fab up the parts bolted onto the new engine out of the car and then bolt them up to the blown engine and see how they fit inside the engine bay.. i have the best of both worlds this way. it will stay in until everything is ready to swap and i will do it all in a weekend

updated pics of the mani turbo and dp mounted temporarily.. they are just tacked right now and will be taken out of the car and welded up to look all pretty... this was to hold it all in place after all the cutting and fitting was done.
came out pretty good i think.
heres the car, notice the rad now fits in front :) (it is backwards because i need to cut a section of of the horizontal rad support to fit the top outlet)
and for those who notice and plan on commenting.. yes i know the center cartridge of the turbo is upside down, and i plan to fix it soon.. just wasted important for the fab work

jeff, i will be tuning it VERY conservative for a bit until i can buy a tranny and build it in my garage.. then when its done i will be swapping them out in a day...
the ultimate tranny i would like is a PAR gearset with quaife lsd but that is down the road a bit money wise..
for now im going to have a welded stock lsd and stock gears.. i have a stock tranny lying around if i blow out 3rd in this one..
after the new tranny is built i will be going for a power tune and raising the boost.

Scott question. given where your RAD is, what about your front bumper? wont it like hit the edges of the rad? OR did you already test it with the bumper on and have clearence?
yellowmsp03.5
June 6th, 2008, 04:33 PM
the rad will actually sit a tad bit lower that where it is in the pictures.. it is actually hanging on bolts supporting it up haha..
i will be notching out a round section out of the bottom of the rad support and the top outlet will be located there so it will be lower than picture here..
and no it doesnt hit.. not even where its located now
yellowmsp03.5
June 8th, 2008, 06:15 PM
ok so.. change of plans again..
originally i planed on relocating the rad up front of the a/c and behind the fmic core... so i held the fmic up originally and and test fit to see if the rad had clearance, and it did.
just yesterday i realized that i had a piece in the way and when i was holding the fmic up to test fit, it wasnt sitting properly and was giving more clearance for the rad then it actually should have.
so now i bolted the core up to MAKE SURE clearance was there, and the rad doesnt fit. :(
which is forcing me now to do what i really should have done first of all like everyone said. im going to be locating the a/c condenser up front and extending the lines. then i will put the rad directly under the rad support (where the condenser originally sat) i have about 1/4" of room of play for the rad vertically and will have to cut into the rad support to make it all fit. i will then be adding more structural supports after everything is placed where i want it and i can see where i have some extra room (doesnt exist in this engine bay haha)
so thats just this weekends update.
a little setback but will get me further in the end and is the correct way of doing this all.
Kansei
June 8th, 2008, 08:32 PM
so how will you reach the rad cap now?
yellowmsp03.5
June 8th, 2008, 08:35 PM
 cutting out the top and inside of the rad support, and then welding in a brace around the cap and outlet... i guess you wil have to see it..
this rad support will be stronger then ever haha when im done with it

so got a little bit more done this weekend.. i know it doesnt look like too much but it was A LOT of work to get it to fit all right
i had to cut out the rad support to fit in the rad underneath it.. the a/c condenser is now in front of the rad like it should be
http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/3910/img2001mk4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
rad, then condenser, then fmic core... not too much room to play. around 1/4-1/2" between the 3
http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/1446/img2003uc5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
then here is the new rad support that i fabbed up and tacked in place.. fits like a charm :)
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/2494/img2009ll5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
all three stacked in front of each other
http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/8042/img2014ds2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
a/c lines sneaking through
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/2923/img2013cv6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
frame notched out for the other lines
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8597/img2007tm8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
and the final fitting.. now it just needs to be painted and welded on for good.

Is ur hood gonna close? (I know ur gonna be using pins, right?) Cause ur rad is higher and the cap seems a little high to me.
Also I see some upper air dam cutting to make the A/c Condensor fit in the bumper?
yellowmsp03.5
June 15th, 2008, 07:19 PM
technically the rad is still in the same location as stock height wise (maybe a couple mm higher if anything) but it has just been pushed back. the rad would have fit under the stock rad support if it didnt have that low point in the center and have the bolts for the rad mount brackets sticking through the bottom... but the new rad support is more or less in the same location height wise... give or take a couple mms
and the hood, bumper and grill fit on perfectly still.. the a/c is basically in the placement where the old vertical rad support was which was nowhere near the grill and such so there is no problem there. and yes i'll be using hood pins

because if you remember back a couple months i blew my engine... well the shrapnel from the block scattered forward into the rad.. it actually took out a main vein in the rad that i need to weld off to repair it
prot3g3
June 16th, 2008, 11:10 AM

June 16th, 2008, 09:05 PM
the overlays look good on a yellow car. I had yellow ones on my car too (for like a day) and took them of because it didn't look quite right with red. Maybe it's because they were on my chrome set?
The engine bay is looking impressive. Nice work on the rad support. I didn't realize how big your ic core was. The manifold and larger turbo compliment it well. The setup is looking badass so far. Where are you going to run the piping to the end tanks? It doesn't look like you have any room to work with.
yellowmsp03.5
June 16th, 2008, 09:16 PM
the i/c piping is all done already.. i fabbed it up last year for my last setup but made sure it would work with this one too becuase i knew i would be doing this very soon.
i will show all the piping route this weekend.. it is as short as possible though. just need to weld all the aluminum pipes together to get rid of all the couplers i had last summer.
thanks for the compliments chris.. and the overlays will def be going back on..
tonight i just did some test fitting and actually bolted the hood on tonight instead of just placing it on like on the weekend and to get a snug fit i had to cut away some of the undertray of the hood to clear the rad support.. not much though.. just enough to miss

the best part of this whole build just came in yesterday haha.. got it made by a company in australia
anodized red to match my vacuum lines, plug wires, couplers and other other little accents
and no i dont want anyone bashing me and saying im an idiot for not running a filter.. i have it all sorted out and know what im doing so dont give me a hard time about it haha
my new turbo bellmouth (velocity stack) should suck in a ton air compared to the restrictions of the smoothest flowing filters..

looking down the entrance to insanity!!!!
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/2421/img2038bt0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
the only problem is that i got the bellmouth to fit over the inlet on the turbo which is 4".. so i got them to make the bellmouth at 4"ID but didnt realize that the turbo has a barb on it so the coupler doesnt slip off which means that the bellmouth doesnt fit on.
so im taking the compressor housing off and getting the barb machined off so the stack will fit over it perfectly :) should be pretty sweet when finished

so got everything done with all the finished welds this weekend.. ground some down to the have the smooth and seamless look to them after they are chromed :)
i also ground all the insides and smoothed all the interior welds and flanges to make sure the flow was as smooth as possibly. the coating will also help with this
while i finished up all the smoothing and grinding tonight, i had a buddy remove all the parts i wanted to be chromed/powder coated becuase im sending all the parts in for chroming/powdercoating and ceramic coating tomorrow night and should have it back on friday evening :)
i have the new front rad support and vertical supports fabbed and painted, just have to be welded into the car and weld my new mounts for the a/c condenser and rad on the the vertical supports.
then the "custom fabbing" portion of this should be done.. then its just assembly from there on in
so things are starting to take shape.
i have everything pretty much ready and prepped to lift out the old engine this weekend. gonna give the bay a good cleaning and then drop the new one in..
still aiming for Oct as long as i have enough money to purchase the last few finishing parts i need to run
anyways heres some pics with everything laying out ready to take to Fireball Coatings (except the black pieces, thats the rad support and was just painted)

imo it helps with response time and tuning. Its gonna work, but when Gary was teachin me a bit on tuning, he said the closer the better. Something to do if exhuast pulse iirc.
If that a MAM manifold... you want to support it. I heard cracking is a bitach with those.
Your build you do what you want, just my 2 cents.

so finally finished up most of the new rad support.. fabbed up the brackets for the condenser to mount to and welded in two vertical supports to strengthen the horizontal piece. sprayed it in a primer and a quick black coat to cover it up. will redo a better final spray when everything is finished!

can the bumper still be used with this new rad mount?
yellowmsp03.5
September 18th, 2008, 10:12 AM
Yes, the bumper mounts to the tabs off the inside of the lights, same as the grill... And I made it so the light mounting didn't change.. The only thing that may have to be modded a bit is the back of the grill may have to be cut away a bit to clear some things.. But that would be the most.

so ive decided the engine will look pretty sitting in the garage all winter.. as much as i dont want it like that, id love to drive it just once before the snow flies, but ive been had a rough couple months due to my own health issues, loss of family and have been living paycheck to paycheck trying to get this done and can't do it anymore.. and it doesnt make sense to get it on the road for a week and take it off for the snow and then rip apart the tranny again for a new gearset and lsd during the winter.. ive decided to just leave it off until its all done exactly how i want. it will be less work and more rewarding in the end.
so this thread will continue, but be put on hold for awhile until i get my life back on track.. until then, thanks for following along
and screw you guys that are gonna bash me for not finishing it like i said i would do haha ***k off bitches haha :p

so heres a lil update.. no real "build" progress to tell you about.. but i got more of it apart and ready for machining and reassembly.
thinking of rebuilding another head a different way. the one i have now is full port and polish, 5 angle valves and oem springs.
i have bought the double springs and titanium retainers and will be picking up the 1mm oversize valves very soon (;)). then i will be installing the Integral stage 2.5 cams. these all require machining to fit so im thinking of selling the built head i have now and machining the stock head i have on the old blown engine, instead of taking apart the built one and remachining it all.
anyone interested.. ?

ok,
so i decided to start over on the head and re-work it. instead of ripping apart this head that was already built, i sold it and am starting from scratch on my stock one.
the Supertech SS 1mm oversize valves, Supertech double springs and Titanium retainers are going into this one along with a lot of machining. i would have had to rip apart the built head and machine it for the new springs and cams, and in the end DID wanna have more porting done, so this is the best for me. i will know EVERYTHING is exactly how i want it.
from talking with Ken a lot on Cams, he highly recommends that i run the Integral 2.5s and not the 3s since the overlap might be too much to correct with cam gears and in the end i might LOSE power. so this is what i am ordering when he replies to my PM haha
as for the tranny, this has also changed quite a bit. i decided that i wanted the car done (and not have to wait for 2 months for a custom gearset to be built) as soon as possible, so i PM'd Dino to buy just the 3rd and 4th gears off him but they have been sold out for a month or two. it also made more sense this way because i could take the money i would be saving from the gears and put that toward a Quaife LSD instead of pushing a welded to its limits, and having to rip apart the tranny again down the road.
so now i was back to square one, since i had to wait 2 months for anything to be made. so i emailed PAR themselves and he told me they have everything on shelf ready to order, from 1-5 and casing reinforcement. thats great news! but that also pushed me back a bit, since i planned on just buying 3rd and 4th, i sold my freshly welded LSD to buy a Quaife and now im broke.
so here goes more over-time at work and penny pushing to gather up as much as i have to eventually order the PARs and im done!
in the mean time, i ripped apart the old block a bit more when i was bored one day, look at this ***kin pistons!!! i knew i needed a valve job before, but look at all the burnt oil on top! nevermind the skirts were all blown right off the piston and it itself was cracked in half.. it was like a bomb went off in the block.. i dont even know the the rod went since it broke just north of the bearing and just south of the wrist pin, where'd the rest go??? wow.

you should look into shot peening your tranny. but not regular shot peening. theres another type (WPF I think, i'll have to look at my book again) its done on a microscopic level and doesnt leave pits. so u are able to do everything from gears to bearings. adds alot more strength than regular shot peening.

May 29th, 2009, 05:19 PM
i havent updated this thread in a while because ive been so undecided on the build, ive put so much work into keep it road legal and everything working (a/c and shiat) and now that i bought the spicy, ive decided that i may as well rip the yellow one apart and make it really competitive.. soo ive decided to strip it all, cage it and run one cf fixed back seat and part out the majority of the appearance cosmetic mods...
i will however insure it for this summer if it ever gets finished and drive it on the streets once in a while to satisfy myself that i completed my original plan.. and i have a bunch of appearances to attend to show people the car who have been waiting for almost two years.. then next year i will completely turn it over to a race car and never turn back
the spicy is/will being modded as well but with daily street driving, fun and reliability as my main focus... like SU SMIC, TB exhaust, Unichip, mounts, short shifter, H&R springs, custom sparcos, 03.5 lip and DG FG grill, Work rims (and some BBS), 2 DIN screen and little things like that that make the car fun again and still reliable while keeping the stock appearance.. building this one the way mazda should have
yellowmsp03.5
May 29th, 2009, 05:21 PM
as for the PAR gears... they are made and waiting my payment.. i just need to figure out exactly what im going to be doing with them and what i want. im thinking of just getting the 3rd and 4th again... im so undecided on everything now with this ***king build
im going to be getting the head done when the cams get in... ordered them 6 weeks ago and Ken just told me another 5-6weeks when i last asked.. shitty
yellowmsp03.5
August 17th, 2009, 05:30 PM
so a long awaited bump.. my last post was May 29th and i was waiting for 6 weeks already.. the cams JUST arrived last week..
the cams look awesome! i went with the Integral 2.5 cams intake and exhaust... they said they will be MORE then enough to run the highest performing engines and that the 3s would have been too extreme and would have had to remove too much overlap and essentially maxed my cam gears out.
i also received another big package last week. a PAR custom ratio 1-4 straight cut and 5th gear helical cut, double synchro, needle bearing gearset...
ratios are:
1st: 2.818
2nd: 2.00
3rd: 1.540
4th: 1.227
5th: .960
Final Drive: 4.105
these are also works of art
and another little thing that also arrived last week was the Adjustable Cam Gears from Focus.
sorry for the ill-lit iPhone pics...

now the head will be sent out for machine work and will begin assembly for the second time. this will be the LAST time for this haha
my Quaife LSD should be here this thursday or friday and then i only have to wait on the ARP bolt kit for it. i will see if/what machining needs to be done and go from there.
its coming together people! i got in a big rush with this build and starting going nuts on purchases, but with a big trip to the tip of the east coast in two weeks and then to Maryland in 4 weeks, i need to save some money, and finish a couple things with the orange car that im working on :)
it may run this year... that was the idea and fully achievable, but am starting to lose interest in this one and pick up interest in the spicy that is drivable, at least until winter. we'll see how she goes

yellowmsp03.5
August 17th, 2009, 07:33 PM
yes i am also curious as to the machine work required... it differs between vehicles as the components are different. supposedly it fits the regular protege but the msps need machine work to the selector fork and a couple areas but DON'T need the speedo gear machine work as ours arent on the diff like yours
and Brian, nobody has the ARP#.. even Sam from Crossover tried to get it for me direct from them with no luck, the only access is the MMS part# which isnt the same as ARPs so it seems i cant buy direct
thekid
August 17th, 2009, 07:36 PM

Only non-ABS vehicles need the speedo gear... I guess it wasn't an MSP tranny that I installed the Quaife in because we didn't machine anything IIRC.

I gotta agree here.
Even just coming down to mom (400Km) I had a timing gear come apart. I no longer see this car as a Long distance car, not all at once anyway. Prolonged driving even at a normal speed will eventually build more heat in all parts.

did however get my valve cover back from ceramic coating a couple weeks back. matched to the mani, dp and turbo and designed to keep the heat down.

i would also like to mention now that i was sponsored by Protege Garage recently, which should help get this project done and on the road quicker :)
thats all for now.
Then came along this post in March 2009
and the new daily driver... will remain stock and reliable for the most part, and stay at that height so i can get to my fire calls when they are not on nice smooth paved roads haha.. picked her up on friday..

That's all for now... for the record i'm not flaming you Scott.. i know your taking your time and building the car right. And you bought the spicy so that could be possible. I just want to see the yellow beast in action one day so until that happens i will continue to spam your thread :p

i will have an update in the next couple weeks.. have had a bunch of parts laying around that can't get installed without machine work..
planned on going to Gord Bush as when i talked to him in the fall he said it would take a week to do it for me... forgot that its spring and everyone wants work done now. now its 2 1/2 - 3month wait. so im looking elsewhere for reputable work to machine a head and tranny casing.
after that, there isnt much left. i will type out a full update when i can find time in the next couple days

so heres the update:
ive thought about it for a year or so... and it sucks to say since i will never see this thing come to life and all my hard earned money, blood, sweat, tears and devotion to this project are now going to waste...
the car will be parted out. completely.
its going to be returned to stock, or as stock as it can go, and sold.
a part out thread will be up sometime this weekend hopefully.
thanks for following my battles and sorry for letting anyone down.
