View Full Version : Removing ABS fuse

Hi Ray or anyone else,

Believe it or not, my P5 is the first car I've driven on a regular basis with ABS.

What would happen if I removed the ABS fuse ? [when the car is shut off of course].

I believe that the brakes will still function properly like non-ABS ones. But I'm concerned if it will affect the OBD or something else negatively in some way.

I wanted to do some brake tests [threshold braking to be exact] so that's the reason for my asking.

Thanx in advance.

y would you want to disable your ABS......it is a good active saftey feature

I'm so used to driving threshold braking and I just want to test things out for, you know when the fuse goes out or something.

I'm not saying I'm better than ABS. No way.

I have removed the ABS fuse on my MSP when competing with the car (autoX/Solo2, winter rallyX).
Otherwise it's fine, can still threshold brake when street driving.
I removed it for these events because when it's in, I can't use the brakes to turn the car. EBD is also disabled.

I share the same thoughts with A.J. at times. Years of threshold braking has been ingrained in me that I still do apply it from time to time still. However , this past winter I have made some emergency braking stop with aid of the WINTER TIRES which are almost manditory over the Dunslops. The ABS and EBD has kept my car in a straight line and I could steer and avoid.

I'ld like to know the results too.

I keep my ABS on while doing Solo 2 so I don't flat spot my tires in the stop box. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

My Integra made it easy to disable the ABS, you simply pull the E brake a couple of clicks (just until the idiot light turns on) drive a few feet and the ABS is deactivated. I haven't tried it on the Protege yet, wonder if it works?

i think our ebrake lights go on w/ one click cause i know that a few guys who have lcds run w/ the ebrake on one click so that the car thinks it's in park so the lcd will play while driving......

When I say I want to test, I didn't mean a formal test with actual distance measured. Sorry.

Just for my own peace of mind.

I talked to Ray today [thanks for the extra key]. In theory, if the fuse is removed, then the brakes should function as though they had no ABS [duh!].

I also found out that we have a 3 channel system.

For those that do not know what a 3 channel system is:
-the front 2 wheels brake independently of each other.
-the rear 2 wheels brake in tandem as a single unit.

This does not include EBD.

The rear wheels brake as a single unit?
INTERESTING!!

Yup. That's the idea behind 3 channel ABS. Meaning if you take a turn and brake, an equal amount of force should be applied to both rear brakes.

Okay old topic.

But is there a recommended way to remove the ABS fuse?
[wiggle it? pull it veritcally out?]

I mean it's one big honking unit and I don't want to snap it like I did the clips removing my grill.

1) Turn off car
2) Make sure all accessories are off (lights, whatever)
3) Open hood
4) Open fuse box on drivers side of engine bay
5) locate ABS/EBD fuse
6) Pull it straight up (may require pliers to get a good grip on it, it doesn't like to come out, be careful not to pinch too hard with tools, it's only plastic and can break)
7) Replace cover on fuse box
8) close hood
9) start car
10) notice how your ABS light stays on in the gauge cluster
11) drive

Its funny, yesterday I was reading that thing on the scandanavian flick,
and it won't work with ABS. So I thought about removing the fuse, because thats what they did in Die Hard 3.

Yes, scandinavian flick requires left foot braking to slow the rear wheels while your right foot keep the front wheels spinning.
If you left foot brake with ABS on, it doesn't slow the rear wheels. It's so very frustrating!!!

That's why with that manouever, I hold the handbrake a little longer to let the ass end kick out while still on the throttle to move the front wheels to get that drag/flick/drifting motion and then release quickly.

Thanks Doug, this is exactly what I was looking for.

Just for your knowledge:

Threshold braking (for you guys that don't know what it means) is done by stopping the car as fast as possible b4 it starts to skid.

ABS is there for when you go beyond threshold braking and the car starts to skid giving the driver manueverability while skidding

SO WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO TAKE OUT THE FUSE IF YOUR TESTING THE THRESHOLD OF YOUR CAR???

Opps caps lock sorry.

According to some Car&Driver article I read, ABS will extend the braking distances on glare ice and gravel roads.

Plus the P5's ABS kicks in way too early for my tastes.

I like the car alot w/o the ABS. Way better feel and for me, better control of the car.
