View Full Version : how to put on new badge

did this today.. bit more complex then i thought
First off materials needed.
Soft cloth, Flat head screw driver, Nu Finish, Rubbing Alcohol, Goo gone
Note: Some people use a heat gun to get the gunk off. Some people use fishing line. This how-to is what worked for me.
1) Open the trunk and look for where the badge pins would be. From there you was to use the screw driver to pop them out which will give you easier access to pry it off. you WILL hear a pop.
2) Try and remove the badge by hand, by slowly pulling it off. If you do it carefully you will be fine.
3) Use the soft cloth and the Goo gone and slowly try to rub away the stubborn gunk that is underneath.
4) You will notice that in the paint the Protege is still engraved in it. Now you will want to get a new soft cloth and apply Nu finish to it. Rub thick circles around the area and let dry. Now buff it out. Repeat as many times as needed until the paint is restored to new.
5) Apply the badge. Line up the holes and press in
6)(Optional) If you want to take this step you may do so. Apply double sided tape or silicone behind the badge or to the holes to make sure that the badge will not some how pop off or get stolen.

yeah, pop the things out, pull it off, use goo gone, use new finish to restore the paint and get rid of the protege that was engraved in there. < it really was and thank god for new finish. Just so people are prepared for when they do it themselves

Do you mean Nu Finish?
FunkRider
April 19th, 2008, 02:31 PM
You should have applied some rubbing alcohol before the new one was put on. Nu Finish contains a wax and your new badge may not stick very well for long.

^^^ I agree. This is more of a How-NOT-To apply a new badge. Since you are putting a new one in the same spot as the old one, what does it matter what the pain looks under it?

not the same badge.. Protege - FAMILIA

also i dont thinking rubbing alcohol would get rid of the protege that is engraved in the paint. Trying to even scratch off the outline was unreal.. maybe nu finish then the alcohol.. and honestly the pins hold it in just fine
just thought if someone was trying to do this they would want to know this instead of thinking that they wouldnt be able to get the engraved protege off.

good point. I went for 3 years with no adhesive behind the badges, never had any trouble.
but ya you had to clean it up before puttin the new badge on, it gets gross around the badge

if it's so obvious and simple and just a few lines of text would do, why write this sorry excuse of a how-to instead of making step by step dumbed down instructions like you're supposed to?
this is NOT a how-to as what you wrote is ambiguous and vague enough that it'll make total n00bs ***k up their shit... this quality level of this "how-to" is exactly the same as someone asking a question in another part of the forum and you just going into that thread to quickly help/answer that person's question... no effort spent on it
its bad enough that n00bs post questions on how-to do shit here... how-tos are supposed to be clear and help n00bs learn and get shit done... write step by step instructions with CLEAR pictures! let's not lower the standard by writing half assed shit that makes every one of us veterans look bad

I'm feeling the llove all the way up here in America Jr.
lol.
But yes, step by step is usually better. Pics may not be necessary, but definitly add to a how-to.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read edwin's post. To put so much effort into attacking a how-to for something so simple.. wow, good show! haha

When did I say rubbing alcohol would do anything except remove the wax from the paint?

doesnt it? and if anyone has a problem with my how-to feel free to pm me. Instead of trying to make me look like an ass when I didnt have to do anything in the first place. Was simplying giving people a heads up for something I did not expect my self.

If you are going to attack this topic again, a good piece of info would be about how to remove the hatch plastic liner without breaking any pins or bending any brackets. If you want help with that, let me know cause I've removed mine a few times and can post up pics of what good removal results in, and what busted brackets and bracket-posts look like :)
Like most interior pieces, its all about pulling slowly and waiting for the "pop"

^I think he had a sedan... so he wouldn't know about the hatch liner. Should specify that this doesn't apply exactly for pro5's

This still totally applies to the Protege5

It's universal if you ignore the original approach and do it all from the outside of the car. Dental floss + heat gun = ftw

^ i find fishing line and a heat gun also works well for removing badges :D

Dental Floss and a Hair dryer for me!!! :D
then just some go-gone and a clean cloth / warm water to get rid of all the gunk. Took me less than 10 mins!

I made the mistake of using a scrubby pad (normally for dishes) and some super-power non-abrasive soap to remove the gunk when I had to re-apply my Protege emblem... left me with some sirface scratches and such. I just rubbed in some paint re-finisher and it's good as new.
suggestion: with any body work on the car's outermost parts like these.... use alcohol/water 50/50 spray and a microfiber cloth to clean areas before and after to ensure there's nothing getting in the way of any work.
.. such as dust/grease/oil/spit/sweat/blood/tears.

Eh... way to pull me in.
1. Use heat gun, or wait for a hot day + fishing line or floss to break up the glue holding the badge to the car. Each badge should have two pins holding it in.. You'll feel it when you play aroudn with the string
2. Once all the glue is broken, you'll have to keep playing and pulling it out at the same time with the string. I took my time such that I wouldn' warp the badge much from pulling
3. Clean the glue off both the badge backing and the car. I used heat gun + taped up screwdriver to get the gunk off. If you use this method, ensure to tape off the screwdriver properly. (other methods include using a stiff blockbuster card to scrape..
You can also use goo-gone or other residue removing products. I opted not to since goo-gone did nothing when I removed my side moldings.
4. I used thin doublesided tape and covered as much of the surface area of the badges as I could. I had to cut it into small strips to get it to fit on some of the backing... it's not the ideal surface for tape.
5. Reattach to hatch. The pins will help it align perfectly. Just give it a few tough pushes. Add heat to make things a bit softer and push it in a few more times.
Warning: My MAZDA badge(word, not logo) doesn't sit perfectly against my hatch anymore. I think I warped it a bit while pulling at it. This may happen with you guys, may not.
That should be it. Some people mention you can take off the hatch liner from the inside and poke the badges out... but I decided that I was too lazy to do that.
Cheers.

I was going to remove my hatch liner and post some pics. I'll do that tonight cause I'm detailing the car when I get home.

for the sedans we dont need to take off any liner when we pop the trunk we can see the pins and just pop them off with a screwdriver

Yeah, far worse than the Mazda badge side. It was so bad, the badge pulled off some paint layers. I found that the badge had some funky black gunge under it, whatever it was meant to do, it seems to have held in more water than it sealed out...
