View Full Version : Who Wants To Make Downforcers?

CarDemon

"Down here at GCPT; what we lack in tools, capital, and sophistication we make up for in thoughts of INNOVATION."
Pres.& Founder'03.

When I heard of Sondra's price paid for that simplistic accesorie I nearly flipped. Even if I had the cash, I wouldn't want to spend that much on something that looks so simplistic to make and even customize to your own liking.

I've been walking the aisles of Home Depot, RONA and other places looking for that right material. It has to be somewhat rigid, yet flexible but not too much of either I guess. I think I may be looking into some 'hockey board' sheeting like material. Is that hard think vinyl or plastic? I will start checking the City of Brampton Recycling Dump.

Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions and materials to donate to my cause?

Are there any joint participants, so I can include your company sticker or logo on my TPC WRC P5 car in the makes?

Are you able to find fiberglass material?

superdave
April 27th, 2003, 12:00 AM
Home made fiberglass can be flexible. If it isn't vacuum bagged (or whatever method to gain strength is used) it won't be to rigid. It will gold its shape, but can twist, and bend to some extent. Test it out. BTW its easily available at crappy tire for a decent price.

What exactly is a downforcer? Is that the flat lip deal that goes under the front bumper? If so there is a plastics distributor on my way home from work where I bought the material that I used as braces in my home made racing seat. That by the way is a product GCPT would be proud of.

Anyways this place is pretty cheap and you can get plastics cut to what ever size you want. Then you could just trace on the shape and jig saw it out or something. I just used my dremel with the router attatchment then filed it to the exact shape.

If a downforcer is what I think it is then Lexan would be wicked. It never cracks. I had a sheet of it and you could wack the corner on the ground as hard as you wanted (literally ... I did) and it would kind of dent but not crack.

Ill get the number of that place and you can tell them the type of material and the size you want and they can quote you prices over the phone.

GCPT's target market was for the struggling middlelowerclassman who have Lexus dreams on a Echo budget. If we can take simple and overpriced mods and accessories, and simulate them to our liking with a fraction of the price we will at least attempt it.

ONce again, I'll be contacting some of you guys about the suggestions put out and do my trek. The picture above is the simplistic device I was talking about. This should be for at least $50 and less. The only thing now is the finishing colour.

Thanks for ideas, and I'll be back to update you guys.

I've been getting a number of private PM's and ideas to what material to use. I thank those that have shown interest.

I want to do a cardboard mock version first but I would also like to look-up Sondra's Skirt. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Sondra's car that is you TPC bastards.

Or, if anyone can get their hands on actual downforcers, that would be great too. I would have no shame in just tracing out the same designed shape.

I don't have access to many power tools and the various saws to cut the materials..,but my neighbours always leave their garages open and I don't wanna go that route yet. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I guess I have to decide on the material now and how it would be painted and mounted.

If anyone has a friend of a friend who has a buddy and a cousin named Cooter who could hook some of us up, that would be great. Who is really interested in this? I take it some guys wouldn't mind this fairly simple accessory mod?

BG Customs is up for the job. I will go out and see if I find any plastic type material for the downforcers. I can also lend my meticulous craftsmanship to the project.

I didn't delete nuthin' brotha. Down here at GCPT we don't close the door on anyones suggestions or help. There is always Kool-aid in the fridge, a bucket of chicken, toothpicks and raggedy sofa seats torn out of old caddys and buicks. Sort of like a Sanford & Son atmosphere.

I'll be finishing up night/weekend school by the long weekend and by then I would at least like to have acquired the material. I am gonna do a cardboard mock-up and then estimate the square sheet of plastic, fiberglass or whatever.

I am trying to find durable free stuff first, then cheap stuff, then a little more pricey stuff. I don't want to spend too much. The key is to do it with a fraction of the cost of which I may recall it was in the $280.00 range for them damn stinking pieces. The look is quite entertaining and sexy and that is what it is all about in the ghetto.

Picture me now, going around construction sites, recycling depots and industrial garbage containers of Bramaladesh and Singdale with my mask on. Now that is ghetto!!! http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
There is a part of me that wants the trek to be ghetto too in the approach so the cardboard mock-up may be stripped off a homeless bum off the streets of the T-Dot. I hang up the cardboard to let the piss dry off and then it would be ready to go. Can I get whut? http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I think that this project could possibly evolve to include the MP3 front air deflecting $300+ thing. Of corse this could only happen with a silent knod of the head approval from Michael Giancanna.

What do you think? Could we get someone <cough> Rowan <cough> Kurt <cough> to let us trace the MP3 thing??

We don't ask we do around here? At the next auto cross if Rowan is there, I will just go underneath his car with my cardboard sheet and start tracing.

Maybe if I spray the underbody of his car with water and then press up a piece of card board to mark the outline. Then we could take a pencil or marker and make the permanent mark on our wet sheet before it drys. NO harm done....and we would dry off his car after too out of respect.

Come on Kurt you lil' bastard. What have you done for Ghetto Concept Performance Trends lately? You run from my freestyle battles at meets and you won't come to Hamilton with me to visit my buddy. What is up with you? Are you to uppity for the working class folk? S'up wit dat punk?

Demon, just face it....the 'Lyrical Crop Duster' is too high in the social class when it comes to Proteges!!! Example:

Snob Class: MazdaSpeed
High Class: MP3
Middle Class: P5's
Working Class: Regular Sedan's (includes GT models)
Poverty Line Class: Base model Sedan's (<- I fall into this category)

You might as well 'suck up' to get the attention of the 'High Class'.

Update!
I just talked to Sondra and she allowed me full access to go and look up her skirt and even get her baby a wee bit wet.! I will not do this forcefully or in a rush, I will be gentle, slow and methodical in my approach. Upon previous observation she has been abused before and she'll be watching me go down.

No, no you TPC Bastards.., I'm talking about her silver car with the carbon fiber coated downforcers. Hey there Laser!, I like that idea of the plastic cutting boards. That is exactly the creative thinking I like. I really want to stress cheap yet effective mod that is just durable and even better than the original concept.

Friday morning I'm gonna walk some more of the H.D., Home Hardware and Rona Aisle and price stuff with dimensions. Ideally I want something that can be cut fairly easily and just bolt onto the bottom of the factory front lip. Painting is another question.

Perhaps that bastard Kurt can offer up some highclass paint. Perhaps since he is so high in his Lyrical Crop Duster he can do a parachute drop of the goodies we want. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

Painting the material will be important.
Finding the appropriate durable material seems to have quite a few options. Cost should be cheap. Painting the various materials, I could really use some expertise Dave.

This project is not exclusively for P5's, but all generations of Pro's and sedans. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif GCPT does not shun anyone or ideas and they even open up to people like Kurt. I am still browsing for cheap or free material first off.

Okay guys!
Here's the update. Thanks to Jali and FlipP5 I have obtained an official trace of a downforcer. I have stencils on bristol board and now I'm stencilling it to thicker cardboard for mock-up mounting to my car. I bought a 18"X 24" w(.177) thickness Acrylic Plastic. It is firm and feels durable as hell. It is sold as a clear sheet of which I will have to cut, drill, prime and paint to my colour of choice.
Acrylic Plastic Sheet Info (http://www.regalplastic.com/products/nav_sub1_1a_alite.html)

Does any Westsider have anytime this week or weekend so I can use a table or bandsaw or dremel or something to cut this sheet of Plastic???

I know GCPT & Shaolin Motorsports has a timetable agenda that is like forever, but I do have them cut out. Now that it is the off-season, I need to get incontact with Bill Stats for sanding.

I still need to trace a MP3 or Mazdaspeed front lip too if I want that option. I have at least 2-3 guys who are interested in obtaining my patent and co-joint ventures in making one themselves.

Hey guys,

This may be some late info cuz I don't go through the posts as thoroughly as I should. But I came across this post just most recently. I have actually made these 'splitters' for a few style of cars. Civics, Preludes, and I am going to make one for the P5. Infact, I already have the template made just need to cut and shape the material. After doing some research and making the various applications I have learned a few things. You don't want it too rigid otherwise when you hit something it will crack. Painting the material isn't going to last because the paint won't adhere to the material that you are thinking of using (although I've never tried to sandblast the plastic and then prime and paint. In that case it might work.) The material you are probably going to want to use is LUCITE, it's the same material that they use for storm doors. You can get it in the right thickness (just can't remember the measurements), it's very flexible and durable at the same time. Colouring the LUCITE is as simple as applying vinyl to it. That way the colour is guaranteed and more uniform (you are limited to the colours of vinyl applications that are available. i.e. black, gold, white, silver, red, blue, orange, yellow, green, carbon fiber unless you can find custom coloured vinyl.) One of the nicer touches you can add to the splitter is trim it with rubber door guard trim. It adds to the look and helps with the durability factor. To attach it to the car the best method is by pre drilling holes and attaching it to the bumper with screws. 5 screws placed correctly will hold it firmly and allow it to be a little more foregiving. I also do recommend that you take them off during the winter because under extreme temperatures they will get brittle and if you hit a piece of ice or anything with good impact they will shatter or break. Otherwise you'll also find your car shoveling snow with these bad boys on. So just use them in the summer time. Come summer I will have them made and available if there is still interest in them at a fraction of the cost. I hope some of these tips will help http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Ironically, that is the same exact material I got from Home Depot. It is sort of like an Acrylic plastic or hockey board or glass material.

I already have a pair cut out for downforcers, I just want to get a trace so I can do a front lip from a MP3 or Mazdaspeed. That material is amazingly strong and flexible. I like how it comes in various width and thickness.

Perhaps, I may hook up with you to see the finished product.

Anyways, I just picked out that ambiguity by luck and to see if you were down like James Brown.

In the next few months and with some contacts I'll be scrambling in the pocket like Michael Vick, Randal Cunningham, Marcus Allen, Daute Culpepper, Warren Moon, Damon Allen and some other noteable Black QB's to grace the fields and get some GCTP projects out. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Can we cut a hole and have exhaust piping leading to the outside?
Can we bar-b-que in there while we work?
Will there be chairs, benches, draftsman table?
Will there be a portable heater, tool shelf and rack?
Will there be a refrigerator and cooler?
Will you have a coat rack so I can hang up my goose jacket and work coveralls there?

I know I'm limited to what I can do there, but thanks anyways. I'm looking forward to taking you up on your offer.

I believe #9 is the most important, without a fridge you just can't work
