I need to tint my Silver MP5. Just wondering a couple of things...

1. Who does a good job, at a good price?
2. How much tint would be good to get... I mean, I don't think I want it dark as night, but still nicely dark... Guess I'll probably have to take a look at what the levels actually look like... but whatever... if any of you have good pictures of your tints up online, lemme know, and what your %'s are.
3. What are the legalities of tinting??

thanks

Kinda asking myself the same questions, but from talking to some of the guys, AutoFX? is apparently pretty good. I have seen some of the jobs they did on the other P5's and they look nice.

Who's gone to AutoFX? and how much did you get it for?

Dave said that he went to TintKing in Mississauga and got his for $160 cash... i think that's a good deal. but i heard tint king fades to purple after a few years.... but dave said that he's always gone there and nuthing has ever happened and that if you tint too dark it turns purple.....

so who's in on this? i'll try to get some pricing numbers

Chopstick, I know Tax and Mark (cruisinblackp5) both got it done at autofx...they both look nice, except Mark has some bubbles on the rear window that he said he is gonna go get them to fix...wonder how that is gonna turn out?

Anywho, I am ready to go now, so if you are thinking group discount...GIDDY UP!!!

I went to
FX AUTO TINT & ACCESSORIES LTD 11 HERITAGE MARKHAM ON (905)471-7555

I do have a couple of pin size bubbles but they do a great job on th eback window. I have seen some pretty bad jobs. They charge about $250 cash but you still get a receipt and the warranty.

My buddy (who happens to own a new 4dr civic) and I were looking for a good place...

Would it be "wrong" if he was inlcuded in on the discount?

I would like to get my done sometime before the hot weather comes around and starts fading my interior and such.

I suggest that NO ONE goes to Tint King on the Queensway!
Had my 91' escort done there a few years ago, and now the tint is purple!! very dissapointed!

Every should ask for the tint w/ metalic fibres in it which prevent the film from turning purple! And also make sure it's a life time warranty too... very important to cover your ass!

It would be cool.. if we could go for a group discount!

let's see some more posts..

I have done 5 cars (mom's, dad, mine x 2) at the Tint King on Queensway! I have never had tint darker that 35% and none of the tints have gone purple on me. Frank ( the crazy owner) gives a good price at cash. I paid $160 and I dare you to find a bubble in my tint.

yes... maybe cuz people tint it too dark 35% or less, that's why tintking stuff might go bad.
i'm not looking for the total black tint look, i like it when you can still kinda see inside during the day...
dave, what % tint are you at?

I agree, maybe I'll be looking at 35's all around...
I just need to cut out some of the light that's coming in, cuz it's heating the hell outta my car... and will kill my dash and stuff eventually...
Plus if it's too dark, people can't see who's driving... and it's always good to been seen.

do they do the moonroof too??

Best advice I ever read regarding tinting was posted some time ago on the Protege Club's Forum. Unfortunately I cannot redall who posted it, so I can't give proper credit, but rest assured, I DID NOT WRITE THIS. If I recall correctly, the fellow who did post this originally, either owned or ran a tint shop for a number of years. Here is said advice:

"1. If it's a cheap price, it's cheap tint, move on to the next shop. You'll want a "metallized" film, not a "charcoal" film. Metallized is warrantied for life and should never fade to a purple, it may fade in intesity over a 5+ years, but if it does, it will fade evenly. The charcoal film will damn near fade as you leave the parkinglot of the shop...it will turn purple and bubble and peel in no time....don't waste your money. Also, if they insist on only doing what is "legal" or basically will not work with you on what you want, move on, don't bother arguing. A good shop will inform you of the laws and then ask, what you want...and do it. It's not up to the shop, it's your car and your responsability if you get pulled over.

2. Make sure they either "shave" or take the film no less than 1/16" from the top edge of the roll up windows.

3. Make sure they "heat shrink" the rear window in one peice. P5 windows are faily simple, although some shops cheat and use 2 or more peices. The film can later shrink and pull apart at the seem, leaving a "light gap". Also, when cleaning, your cloth can catch the edge and peel it up. Plus, if they use a butt splice technique for the 2 or more peices, this means they apply the 2 peices of film then cut it along the defroster line, this can damage your defroster if not done correctly.

4. Make sure they use top quality Film (Llumar, Johnson, Madico) stay away from Sungard, Soloar Gard and anything that remotely sounds like a pep boys brand.

5. Pep boys/autozone brand is as cheap as they come...save it for your enemies.

6. Make sure they DO NOT cut too much ruber from the rear door vent windows (small triangles) as some rubber must be cut for a flawless job, make surethey don't hack it up.

7. Make sure they REMOVE the door panels, not just simply "tuck" the rubber dust seal in, as this can permanantly screw up the shape and function of the dust seal.

8. On brand new cars in the sunbelt regions, i strongly suggest a light (50%) on the complete windsheild. It's light enough that it will never be detected and will save your dash etc....better than a dash cover and plus, the windsheild is the largest window, it brings in the most amount of heat and glare, so why not help your driving comfortability. I will never drive with out it again.

9. you have to accept some degree of error, as a completely flawless job is absolutely impossible. Although the obvious light gap or dust storm is cause for a re-do.

10. a good price for a professional job should run in the $200 area, the cheap tint can be as low as $70."

Sorry for it being so long, Bbut I felt it really was worth repeating in entirety.

My car is silver and I would rather get a silver tint than straight black.

I remember my Dad had an Accord done in a nice gold colour one time.

Is it possible to get a silver tinted tint ?

TIA

as I've been saying since the beginning, I'm in.. so long as its getting done at a time when I can do it... my schedule is pretty jammed, but I need the tint... just say when and where, and I'll be sure to get there if even remotely possible. (btw, how long does it take to tint??)

Fx said you should schedule to leave your car there untouched for 3-4 hrs for the job to be done well (see: fixing anything if it doesn't come out right).

BTW, madshrapnomuffin, I like that bit about the seeing if she has a sister http://toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Leave it there for 3-4 hours after the tint is applied? Or 3-4 hours to have the tint applied?

ChopstickHero
May 7th, 2002, 11:17 PM
umm... not sure if it will take 3-4 hours to install but you never know... they could be really busy.......
but ask FX people about how to care for your tints after they are installed. ie how long it will take before you can open/close your windows immediately after installation, cleaning, avoiding specific cleaners, etc....

I would say that you should plan on leaving those windows closed for a few days. Put the damn window lock on if you have passengers, they'll forget for sure.

Mine is silver.

I went with Premium (their best quality) at 35% all around.

I would suggest you go for this tint on the front. As for the back windows, you might want something darker. I am happy with 35% since I wanted a clean tint, not ghetto.

Up to you.

BTW, you can see really well even at nite when it's raining (like last nite), so it's all good; that was my #1 concern.
I got mine for $240 tax in cash and I also asked for a tint band on the top of the windshield

Does anyone have pics of a Midnight blue P5 with platinum tint, or that "fading" platinum into straight black (35% or whatever)
It's something I'm thinking of doing and I'm just wondering how it looks
