Anyone had a problem with a funky smell coming out of the airconditioning until it cools down? Mine is beginning to smell skanky. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Sounds like it might be mold sometimes it grows inside the fan tubbing. There are foam cleaner thingys you can by to correct this.

I get this weird smell from my vents some times .. there is a long thread on protegeclub about it, too. Kinda like a rotten egg like smell.
I think the concensus was something like Fat Mike said .. and the solution is to try and remember to shut off your a/c for a few minutes before you park, or run warm air through the system so there is less chance of condensation. Something like that.

They talked about this on Motoring 90something years ago. They said its to do with bacteria. They said to find the intake for the fan vents and spray some Lisol in while the fan is running. They said it would kill the bacteria. But I think that our cars have a filter so maybe you have to remove it. http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Take those fabric softener sheet thingys that you put in the dryer.
Shove them down your vents far enough that you can't see them, but you can pull them out when needed.
The bam.......nice smelling car everytime you open your vents!!

I'll try the running the fan without the air conditioner trick and see if that clears it up.

My wife has complained about this nasty mouldy odor from the vents for the first minute or so after starting the car with the a/c on. It's been her one and only complaint about the car in 4 months. I have been ignoring her for the most part, but she says her previous POS car (cheap ass Suzuki Swift she had for 10 years) did not have such a problem, so she wants it fixed. I don't think she will buy the suggestion to turn off the a/c before stopping the car (not practical to remember this, and it really should not be necessary). I may ttry the fabric softener sheets, but if someone finds a definitive cause/ practical solution), please post it....

Tried turning off the A/C before turning off the car, and still have the problem. Next trick I'll try is running the heater for a few minutes and see if that helps.

On the contrary to what you might think, the dealereship sounds right on this one. The catalytic converter can smell like rotten eggs. Thats fairly common when working the cat hard. The mold smell is completely different then the egg smell.
