The car has done another track session at Silverstone, which showed a massive improvement from the previous year and has also been down the 1/4 mile to record a 16.1. Not superfast, but still the fastest P5 in the UK!

Also had the car dyno'd now....a reasonable 152bhp at the flywheel, and that was before some of the last engine mods were in place! :D

Its taken 3 years to get there....but i dont think there is much more i can do...so time to move on maybe!

Interesting the EDM FS-DE doesn't have the same coilpacks like the USDM/CDM does. Also the horn is mounted to the shock tower?

None the less NICE Freakin car! The blue interior stuff isn't my cup of tea it looks like every mod was done really well.

How is the screen right in front on the centre vents? Does it effect the cabin's interior heating/cooling at all? Does the screen get hot when you have the heater on?

The screen is one of the motorised ones that pops out of a single-DIN size headunit...so its never out when the heater is on anyway :D

i'd love to have that guage cluster for that extra screen. i wonder if it would be a plug in swap for us......

From the stuff I've seen, yes it is. You'd just have to keep your speedo gauge face (easy to do when it's apart) to have km/h as the primary reading --or get a cluster from a 323 outside the UK.

check www.protege323.com someone there did the upgrade from a lower euro model to that cluster, even with pretty knowledgeable people saying it wouldn't work.

Ah....thats because thats a slightly older pic of the dash...from before the TWM was fitted. It does actually drop the height quite noticably! :o

Ok so this is not so much an update...more of a complete revision!

In Feb this year i split up with my Canadian fiancee of 3 years....and to console myself i did what any good man would do...and bought a new car :D

So now that this is sitting in my driveway to act as a dailly-driver

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1587.jpg

Ive been able to focus on making the P5 into more of a track-toy :D

For now the engine/transmission & suspension are already of a decent spec for racing, but there has had to be some changes. Im now running Toyo R888 road-legal track tyres for one...which were interesting in the wet at a track session this month!

On the outside this has just been in the form of a Fiber Images Carbon-Kevlar vented hood

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1526.jpg

The major changes have all been on the inside. The Recaro seats and retrim are all gone along with a large amount of the interior plastics. All ICE is now gone and a few more track-focused interior goodies are in place. The steering wheel has been replaced with an OMP Superquaduro one, the Shift Knob with a Carbon Fibre one from Reverie and the seats are all gone apart from a single FIA-Spec Cobra Sebring S with OMP Harnesses.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1520.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1521.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1523.jpg

So im back to having a bit list of things to do! Its going to be a fairly slow progress...but engine swaps, ECU, Clutch, Flywheel, relocating the battery, sunroof plug, carbon door-card, roll-cage.....

Since your on the path for a track toy look into getting a light weight battery. I suggest Deka if you can get them there. Those light weight racing batteries that are very expensive ($2-$300) are rebadged deka's (between $65-$90). Many seem to like the ETX14 (http://www.eastpenn-deka.com/assets/base/c.pdf)

Also ditch the AC and releated components, you can still run the powersteering with just a shorter belt.

You should get a spare steering rack to De-power so you can loose the power steering system also.

Just spotted your mounting location for your harness. You should really raise that a bit. If you have to, run to the C-Pillar's seat-belt mounting location.

Better yet, rock a cage. :)

Im planning to rock a cage....probably next year though.

There isnt anywhere that does cages for a P5 though is there? I was planning on a simple bolt-in universal cage for ease/cost!

I know nothing of this topic but i did read this earlier seems to be what you were asking about / I dont know what the cost is past the deadline or for shipping but it wont hurt to inquire

You can also get a harness bar that bolts to the stock seatbelt posts on the B pillar, the model made for the skyline was listed as fitting the Protege. I've seen them on ebay.

I don't believe they actually mount to said bar but they just sit on top so your spine doesn't get compressed if you ever have to use the 4 point harness.

Got the car out on the 1/4 mile today....and happily the weight reduction has been worth an extra half second....recorded a personal best of 15.6secs

Makes me now the first person in the UK to get a P5 under 16 secs :D

Only like 10 or 15 people in north america have had an NA 3rd gen under 16 seconds even. Good stuff!

One member made his own custom rods/pistons on the US boards. The rods were longer than stock giving it a better rod ratio allowing him to rev to 9000 and make 197 whp @8250 rpm NA. Obviously many other changes were made to produce this power.

it had been too long since I last did anything to the car, so I changed the old slightly battered Greddy Oil Catch Can for a new carbon-fiber one from Forge Motorsports :D

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1691.jpg

The first parts for the next stage of tuning have also arrived...

JDM Mazdaspeed cams

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1718.jpg

and some SR Motorports accessory pulleys

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1719.jpg

The plan right now being an engine rebuild over the winter, although i still need a few more parts. The pulleys are a problem over here - i already have the UR Underdrive pulley as well, but for some reason the Euro model used slightly wider belts so I need to replace the other pulleys and belts with North American ones to allow the aftermarket pulleys to work!

The some JDM Mazdaspeed pistons and a Greddy Emanage system are on the list....Im aiming for the fastest NA Gen3 Protege possible :D

The only slight delay I can see in the tuning of the P5 is that my plans for coming to TO are back on. My flatmate over here is from the city and as she is looking for a condo...we have decided to get one together. Hopefully this way it will be sooner rather than later that I have a home in the T-Dot :D

Your ride looks great. I just wonder how you like these Toyo T1-R's. I am planning to get some new tires and they are on my list.

forest88
June 10th, 2008, 01:01 PM
The T1-R's were great, I certainly had no complaints with them - and I used them for the road, track and strip with no problems :D

Have to say though...I love the R888's i now have even more...the cut slick tread pattern looks awesome and in the dry they are unbeatable!

Kansei
June 10th, 2008, 03:00 PM
at least initially race times in the Speed World Challenge (Touring and Grand Touring) were slower on the R888 vs the Toyos they used last year.. may have just been a learning curve, but the stuff I read seemed to point at it being a less capable tire.

forest88
June 11th, 2008, 05:43 AM
Strange that, as I have found a big increase in grip since I switched over. i guess time will tell though, as I have only managed one track session on them this year so far.

Well I managed to get another couple of mods finished off today..

The SR Motorsport Pulleys are now in :D

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/SRMotorsportalternatorpulley.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/SRMotorsportWaterpumppulley.jpg

And have been joined under the hood by a Streetunit powersteering cap

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1876.jpg

The on the inside, the fire extinguisher has been refitted - now bolted onto the shell

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/FireExtinguisherrefitted.jpg

And i have no skin on the ends of my fingers after tucking the wiring on all the doors and hatch :D

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1887.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1883.jpg

While i was in there i had to show a little love for the guys that have helped me out with a lot of parts...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1881.jpg

Then finally on the outside i drilled holes in the foglight blank to allow more air to the Injen.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/forest88/DSCN1877-1.jpg

Oh and the new personal licence plate is on now after the old one was transferred over to the RX-8

:woot:

Niceness.

But, I think i may have kept a passenger seat. :)
I like how everything matches (blue car, blue PS cap, Blue pulleys, Samco rad hoses, good stuff)

forest88
July 28th, 2008, 04:22 AM
Im not sure exactly what the weight is....but a conservative guess would be its lost around 150 - 200 kgs. All i know is it was enough to cut off another half second on the 1/4mile :D

Its hard to tell if the pulleys make much of a difference as so far ive only managed to drive it back from the garage to my place....should find out properly next time i can use it in anger!

I am considering putting a passenger seat back in.....its just not top of the list ;)
