the back emblems are stuck on with this glue/adhevsive. heat it up with a heatgun or hairdryer and the glue should be soft enough for you to take the emblems off. do it slowly to make sure you don't crack or chip the paint. heat the remaining glue/adhesive and rub it off.
about the holes left by removing the licence plate, you can try and use bondo or automotive plaster to fill it in and then try to paint it. i don't think it's worth it b/c cops like to give out $100+ tickets for not having the licence plate in the proper spot.

As long as your front and back license plates are clearly visible.. and the back one is lit up by a 3 candela from before sunset to before sunrise, you should be OK.
At least that is what it says in the Highway Traffic Act.
(please check for yourself to make sure .. it's on the mto website)
Not that legality has stopped police from writing tickets before...

HOLD ON BEFORE YOU PEEL YOUR REAR EMBLEM!!!!
They are not just stuck on with sticky tape but they actually have posts and will leave holes in your hatch! Each emblem has 2 posts each. If you peel the emblems off you will have to fill in more that the holes in the front bumper from the license plate removal.
Mike you are crazy (almost wrecked a club mates ride!http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif who told you that they were just stuck on? Did you ever look? http://msg.toprotege.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif

You posted incorrect info with such authority! I hope other Protege boards don't read your post - they will make fun of us!
