Hello,
To those who may not know me my name is Marlon John around Toprotege.com my board name is Marleymar, I drive a 2003 laser blue P5. I currently reside in Pickering Ontario thus I belong to the East Side clan.
I joined Top in Feb 2007, actually picked up my P5 in April 07. Since joining the club I have enjoyed the friendship of the club and the various meets. I work for Canada’s biggest telecommunications companies, been there for 11 years commitment has never been an issue for me, married with two children.
I fully recognize the most important aspect of this role is time allotment and availability; I will make every effort to meet these requirements as I take the role and nomination very seriously. My presence around the club has been natural for me and not forced which I hope all I have come into contact have witnessed, by nature I am a fun loving person. Meeting new people has never been a problem for me; I welcome a good conversation and a good laugh. Others have seen my willingness to help in any way possible.
--
Club Background
Attended most major meets (Midnight Bowling, C7, Familia Picnic, and MOTM to name a few)
Attended other clan meets (Central, Westside, TM3/TOP Caste field)
Constant presence on the board (Striving to answer question or point someone in the right direction)
Constant presence at the eastside clan meets (started the meet threads on most occasions)
--
Goals as the Events Coordinator
Strive to revisit the successful events of the past, while introducing new events.
Establish TOP as a solid contributor to charitable events around Toronto.
Have an open ear to the members.
Provide events where new and old members can attend and most importantly enjoy.
Make every effort to meet other car clubs to promote larger events.
--
Closing comment: I feel it necessary to say the following. Please note this is not meant to be taken in an offensive manner. I could plan events as often as I like, the number one factor of successful events will always be club participation. I understand we all have lives, families and jobs, but in order for any event to be a success would be club participation from Old Members, Alumni and Rookies. Exposure like PAS and other magazines will come in time, we have show continued support of club events and clan gatherings. It has to be more than a place to post funny quotes, or buy and sell parts.
I respectfully open the floor (thread) to any questions/inquires.
Respectfully
Marlon “Marleymar”

Nice write-up Marlon.
Along side with event planning, this role also brings on the challenge of directing and holding the attention of a large group. How comfortable are you with public speaking?

Public speaking has not been something I am totally used to, having very limited exposure to it thus far. Looking at it from a growth stand point it is not something I would shy away from, by this I mean I would do my best to be 100% confident in achieving and completing it if and when needed. Preparation is necessary at all times regardless of the task.

Guys, We're trying to keep this thread clear and informative. Please respect the fact that these are serious roles that need to be filled... If you wish to ask a legitimate question please do so in this thread.

Marlon - I would like to know what your thoughts are to spark more interest in newer members that may be intimidated to attend their first meet. What suggestions would you have to get these people out and participating in meets/events?

My Question would be
Would You Be Holding Events More FRequently Then In The Past, As Well I Think In Order For The Club To Grow Rookies Would Have To Be Heard Instead Of Following The Seniors.
ie. would a rookie be allowed to plan an event with the watchful eye of a senior.
Also We (Toprotege) Could Use Alot More Exposure Is There Any Plans Of That?

Honestly I think we need all newcomers to see that we all, at one point or another been there. I think events such as the rookie meets allow for a relaxed introduction to the club. Rookies need to know they are welcome and needed because without them the club does not move forward. Personally I would make the effort to host more events and strive to enlist the help of clan reps to get more rookies to turn up. Bottom line make them feel welcome.

I will make every effort to plan more events most certainly club response will drive this ability; we need maximum participation for there to be more events. As stated in my introduction my plan would be to build on the success of those before by revisiting the past events and adding on by looking for new events for the club.
Should I be chosen as the club event coordinator I have no issues with working with anyone on an event idea, just note the event would need the backing for the officers prior to running with any idea.
I agree we need exposure but we must be mindful to ensure this exposure is positive; each and every one of us every day represents TOP we need to keep that in mind. Basically would need neutral ground events by this I mean we can’t be backing a charitable event held by M.A.D.D one weekend and a club event where there is drinking the next. We have to stand for something or else everything we do ends up meaning nothing.

This might sound like a joke question, I assure you, I don't mean it as one.
You said We have to stand for something or all we do means nothing. What do you feel TOPro stands for? (don't say toronto protege club:p)

A group of car lovers who have found their way to this particular make and model of car the Mazda Protégé for various reasons. A club where all are welcome and help is given without prejudice, where friendships are forged.

In my opinion the Events is one of the main roles in this club and part of the reason why we are such a great 'social' community and car club.
It goes beyond the 'internet forum' and just meeting online. It's about the interaction and that face-to-face contact that makes this community tight.
Just off the top of your head what would be some examples of new ideas for events you have in mind for the upcoming year to help keep that social aspect strong?

That brings a tear to my eye. Any chance of the club being involved in more community based events, i.e. fundraising, charity cruise's and the like?

Off the top of my head, these events come to mind:
§ Restaurants get together
§ Family based events
§ Go Karts
§ Sick kid’s toy drive
§ Children's Aid Christmas toy packing drive
§ Habitat for Humanity

That would be the plan fun while showing the community that we are more than car buffs, that we are involved in our communities. Remove the stigma that all car clubs endorse the wrong things.

Hey Marlon,
Congrats on the nomination!
I was just wondering what you thought or what you think you could do to get those of us who aren't interested in street racing onto a track as a group? Just in light of a rather funny on going thread I think it would be great to get those of us who want to race onto a proper "road track" and at the same time show other clubs & the community that we're out on the streets "Driving" and save the racing for the track! This could also be killer for some sort of coverage which, as the PAS mag spot would ultimately gain us the exsposure iJay spoke of. Sorry bit of a round a bout question hopefully you can find a clear question somewhere in here

Thanks, most certainly as long as it’s an event where we would get the club participation and attendance of spectators then I am all for it. Taking on a task of this magnitude I would certainly seeks suggestions from the club on a whole, research the possibilities of pulling it off successfully. See if it’s been done before leverage the possibilities of going into the event alone or with another club to reduce any overhead cost. Ensure we would have the services of Eric for prosperity as well as others photographers and go from there.

My question for you Marly is.....When running an Event you have to sometimes be in more then one place and taking care of more then one thing at a time to ensure everything is going as planned. Do you feel this is something you can handle? As some people get flustered in such situations, what would you do to ensure this does not happen?

Honestly I think I can handle anything however, as time passes the ability to handle pressure situations grows. I have been under the gun before with my work experiences; this role would be a different case and present its own unique challenges. In a nut shell I may loose my mind with the first major event but then I learn from it and move onto the next. In order to become better at anything one has to learn from past errors and success.

Point taken and another learning experience completed. Sometimes independence can be a gift and a curse.

Prior to closing I wanted to say thanks for the nomination again, also thanks for providing me with the opportunity to have an open forum for member’s questions. Should I be chosen my goal would be to do the job to the best of my ability; I hope you all enjoy the Events. Note your participation is necessary, so are your ideas.
Respectfully,
Marleymar
