"To prime or not to prime? That is the question."

Some of you have painted your interior plastic and vinyl bits. Did you use primer?
Note: I bought the Foliatec dye stuff and the Foliatec Foam cleaner.

On the soft stuff like the handles primer is not needed, right?

On the hard stuff do I have to use primer to get good results?

If I need to prime, can I use a regular plastic primer from Canadian Tire or do I have to get the Foliatec stuff (is there a difference?)?

Please fill me in on as many details as you can, including prep tips.
I have read the other thread about painting but primer was not really argued.

Dave, you don't need priemer. The paint sticks best to the softer stuff, make sure to wipe down all parts being painted with some sort od varsol. All the oils must be removed in order to stick. If not the paint will just scrath off no problem. Masking tape wont ever stick to the dashboard.

Very important to remove the oils!

Adam you did a good job painting the bits and peices of your ride. I don't remember if you did the centre console and gauge trim... Anyway, did you prep the hard plastic stuff somehow before using the dye? (BTW you used the silver Foliatex stuff too - right?)

I don't know if varsol is a good idea as it does remove paint. Use an alcohol instead to prep the area. If the varsol sinks in then there is no way your paint is going to stick. plus it stinks like shit.

I went and did everything the Foliatec way (Foam cleaner, Primer, Colour spray, and Sealer). I don't know if Foliatec is the way to go since it is so expensive but the Foam cleaner is the best buy - really easy to clean and good coverage while smelling nice and not harmful to the hands.
